In Northern Virginia, the middle schools are replacing the building names - they were named after poets. Due to their historical affiliation with the Civil War each middle school name is being replaced with local civic leader names. In NYC, they renamed bridges but nobody calls them by the new names. They named the 59th street bridge (obvious) Ed Koch (after a mayor from the last century and renamed the Triborough Bridge (which connects three boroughs) RFK after Robert F Kennedy (who was from a different state). I have nothing against the political figures, but the other names describe the purpose or location of the bridge. None of my generation will be calling them by the new name but will be forced down to the next generation who won’t even know who those politicians were!!😱 It would be like London naming Tower. The world renowned Mann Auditorium (of the Israel Philharmonic) turned into another name that no-one remembers only to honour the guy who paid for renovations... etc

I worked for 20 years in Baldwin Tower which was part of Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. I was the RN and nurse practitioner for 5 cardiothoracic surgeons. They moved their practice to another location and Baldwin Tower was torn down. It broke my heart. This tower meant so much to me. And for a bigger parking lot for the hospital which was remodeled and renamed. Downtown Columbus was never the same. For so long I couldn’t bring myself to go there. My husband, who was a pharmacist in the main hospital tells me it’s progress, but I can’t understand why it had to be this way.

Renaming these buildings doesn't promote the new owners as much as it erodes the character of the city. It's a joke in Rhode Island that because of poor economic times, stores come and go so much that if you ask for directions, you get something like this: "You know where Benny's used to be? Turn there, and go past the old Almacs store......" People aren't using these new names, they're describing the town as they remember it 20 or more years ago.

The public will always decide. So possibly a waist of money. The same as changing the name of a land mark house, it takes about 2 generations before the change has an effect on local people. 🇬🇧🏴

Oh yes this happened with both the Cricket and Football Stadium in my city, I still refer to the Cricket by the original name it was given but the Football fans won out against calling the Stadium after the sponsor as it was far to long to say and it didn't have a link to the Club's history.

Good morning Neil 👋 I personally don’t like change. Like redefining history in my eyes. Happens here in Australia

👋🏾 yes Neil name changes happen. I registered for high school with one name and by the time I graduated, politicians renamed the school. I have transcripts with both titles.

In my city in the 1800s a hospital was built named Glockner, then A big name here donated and built more building he was named Penrose. It became Glockner Penrose people started just calling it Penrose (easier) stayed that for many years-recently ( a year ago) bought by a group named Common spirit. Now named Common Spirit Penrose Campus. People still calling it Penrose
