Vinland is a real place that the Vikings discovered in North America, but to Thorfinn it represents an idea. He's never been there he's just heard stories about it and in his mind he sees it as this perfect paradise.

4:17 this conversation between Thorfinn and Askeladd means a whole lot actually... I feel like ever since Askeladd killed Thors, he kind of knew that he was responsible for destroying something that shouldn't have been erased. Askeladd just doesn't think he's at liberty to live so delicately. choosing to spare someone for the sake of his own sentiments is a privilege that Askeladd lost a long time ago by now... if he ever had it in the first place. but at the same time, now Thors is missing from the world, both his philosophy, and the person who had the power and drive to speak it. and Askeladd is watching Thorfinn become ruined, year after year, because he's turning out just like Askeladd himself. [SPOILERS AHEAD FOR LATE SEASON 1] once we know Askeladd's backstory, we can see that Thorfinn is more similar to Askeladd than we ever could've imagined, given how Askeladd felt about his father. we're watching Askeladd grow up to resemble the man he killed out of hatred too. and Askeladd sees this commonality... he's too smart not to notice. so in a moment like this, when he tells Thorfinn that they're both growing older, and someday Thorfinn will beat him... it feels like he's almost accepting that he probably deserves what Thorfinn will someday do to him. but more importantly... Askeladd derides Thorfinn time and time again for letting his anger flare. his fighting is sloppier like that, he's more defeatable like that, and if Thorfinn had just cut him down in his sleep like Askeladd did to his father in the first place, Thorfinn might've saved himself years of struggle. but to look at it another way... Thorfinn maintains something that Askeladd lost a long time ago. anger is a feature in the hearts of good people. good people get angry when they see something unjust or unfair. Askeladd used to feel that way... back when he cared about his mother, it made him angry to see her hurt, and he killed his father with that emotional drive. but these days, he hardly cares about anything. he doesn't really feel like he has the right, after everything he's done. ceasing to care is how you keep from being a hypocrite when you live like this. but Thorfinn hasn't lost that spark. he's still burning white hot with that anger, and it's gotta be frustrating for Askeladd to see, every single day. this thing that he hasn't had for such a long time... at first, his cynicism causes him to laugh at Thorfinn. he's just some tiny child who can barely lift the sword he swings at him. but throughout everything, Thorfinn is tenacious. he's determined and enduring... he doesn't stop. by now, Askeladd has to square with the fact that not only is he ruining Thorfinn... but there's a chance that if Thorfinn could stop pursuing him, he might get better. and obviously Askeladd isn't willing to give his life to Thorfinn on purpose. in some ways, cynical nihilism is a hell of a drug. but someday, when his defeat happens, I think Askeladd feels like he'll deserve it. really, it's Thorfinn who doesn't deserve to live like this.

Episode 10 is design to make us comparing Thorfinn's dream at 1:53 and Askeladd's worst nightmare, as he told Thorfinn at 4:56 . Thorfinn's dream is a representation of Vinland as his father described to the slave he rescued in Ep. 1: A dreamland of peace. Thorfinn already described such a land to Hordland, the slave girl, in Ep. 8, but now we can see a representation of it, similar to the one the slave boy saw before dying. Of note, the only people we can see in Thorfinn's dream before the arrival of the Vikings are Thors and Thorfinn himself. This means that for Thorfinn the dream of a better life, a life of peace is only built around his father, in part because, besides Helga and Leif, Thors did not involve anyone else in his dreams, including his daughter and his son. As such, for Thorfinn the dream has been destroyed by Thors' death. He now thinks that only rage and despair remain for him. What Askeladd is saying to Thorfinn at 4:56 is something important. He is talking about his worst nightmare, something he thinks is going to happen no matter what he does. It is not Ragnarok, but the age of twilight, an age in which the world would become older, with no space for beauty and peace, but only for blood-thirsty men like him and his men, only able to destroy, pillage and rape. Although Askeladd thrived by that way, now that he reached fifty he feels discomforted of what the world has became... also thanks to his own actions. Thus, he started to hope for the advent of Ragnarok or of the Final Judgment to put an end of such a rotten world... until the knight arrived and announced that prince Canute is held prisoner by Thorkell. Askeladd then said that "this isn't the time to just fade into the twilight", just before killing the knight. The reason for that will become clearer in some of the episodes to come, but I think you might already figure out why he did so. Besides, Thorfinn got impressed by Askeladd speech about the age of twilight, to the point that, for a moment, they seemed more a mentor and his apprentice, rather than two enemies. This is a seed that remained inside the boy, and will be relevant for his future development.
@TryingExtraHard

The guy that Leif Erickson was talking to Thorfinn about was likely Harald Fairhair, and he likely ruled about a hundred or so years before this story starts. He should be long dead by now. Canute's brother Harald is indeed a different guy, and they left him back in Denmark so that he could rule while his father and brother were away in England. The reason that Norway isn't being talked about as a major player in this story is because of two reasons. The first is that Norway is currently under the rule of Denmark, though it goes back and forth pretty constantly during this time period. The battle that Thors was taking part in at the very beginning of episode one (The Battle of Hjörungavágr, roughly 986AD) happened because Sweyn's father, Harald Bluetooth, tried to force all Nordic countries under his rule to convert to Christianity. When this happened it caused a rebellion that was led by Haakon Sigurdsson, who was left to rule Norway by Sweyn's father. Denmark, and their allied Jomsvikings, lost this particular mini war and Norway would stay independent for some time but was later brought back into Danish control by 1000AD or so. The second is because of a previous working relationship with the Byzantine Empire. While Norway wasn't under Danish rule it threw in its lot with a group of cultures (Saxons, Franks, Frisians, and Wends) that allied with Otto II, Holy Roman Emperor against Denmark. This led to Norway establishing a working relationship with the Varangian Guard, which was a group of mercenaries from Northern Europe established sometime around 850AD that worked directly for the Holy Roman Empire including acting as the personal bodyguards for the Emperor himself. As such, during this time many of the most promising fighters from Norway were often going South to work in the Mediterranean.

To explain why they killed the messenger.... This is a POLITICAL move, he doesnt want to just HELP the main army get back the prince, he wants to get all the credit for saving the prince himself. So if he let the messenger guy live, they will call for their OWN reinforcement, and have a better chance of saving the prince without askeladd. Even if Askeladd helped the main army, those guys would get the reward instead of Askeladd's random band of pirates. So killing the messenger allows Askeladd to be the ONLY group to know the prince is in trouble for a while.

As a Finn I'm obligated to correct your geographical knowledge about the Nordic Region. What you referred to as Norse is an ancestral term for some of the Nordic region, mainly Norway, Sweden and Denmark. But that term isn't in use nowadays. So first theres the Scandinavian Peninsula that comprises of mainland Norway, Sweden and northern Finland. Then there's what's commonly referred to as Scandinavia that comprises of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. In the English language people usually add Finland here but it's not correct. Finally there are the Nordic countries that are Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland (as well as the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland). @@rinne-8810 I find both equally resonate with me. Both have amazing story and both does help me into a more positive thinking person and try to use violence as a last resort. AoT shows us what happen if we keep adding fire to cycle of hatred and keep using violence as first method, culminated in the worst bloodshed ever possible which is the rumbling a genocide on a global scale. VS shows us what happen if we keep trying to let go of hatred and do more action through talking and understanding each other. We still have to fight but not out of hatred but out of love.

Next anime you guys watch should be One Punch Man. It's hilarious, emotional, and mostly epic. I just know you guys would love it but I know you guys got tons of suggestions for the next show to watch.

I really want you guys to give reactions on other 2 OVAs of Attack on Titan The very first one has 3 episode and not so informative as Levi’s one but it’s funny and reveals characters’ personalities. The last one has more interesting plot, it also has 3 episodes and the first two tells about Annie’s life as a military police before her first try to kidnap Eren and the last one also VERY INTERESTING, it’s about Mikasa, that episode shows the part when Mikasa thought that Eren died and was depressed so when she went out of gas there was a moment before Eren saves her as a Titan she was ready to die and she thought what her life could be if her parents didn’t died that day, so the whole episode shows her imagination and tells about her true feelings for Eren

@@smol6193 no it's not, Vinland Saga is one of the best animes out there, they watched like 5 animes it's not surprising Vinland is already up there in the top 3 (and the first half of the show is enough to compete with other big names)
