I had the same problem in Frisco, Tx. Soil was all wet clay no sand or topsoil so I made wooden beds that I put 5 yards of topsoil from the Plano Tx recycling that turns trees, brush, grass anything plant based - into rich good, dark black topsoil that you can get anything to grow in.

I have had the same thing happening to me last year. So, here is what I would do: 1. Loosen up the dried compost and work it in the existing soil. Some sawdust is probably a good idea. Worms and the other crawly stuff, can't do their job in a hot, hard and dry soil. 2. Mulch it to prevent a nother dry out. You can also cover the aeria with some ground covering plants that provide shade and nutrients for your primary crops. 3. Keep the soil moist. The worms will go deeper into the soil if the ground near the surface dries out. So the moisture will keep them working on your upper most layer. With that you should be good to go :-) 06:01 Good luck!

If you don't have worms, you need fungus to break down fibers into soil. As appose to sand, silt, clay. So composting is a good choice. It may take years to build up the soil into productivity. If you aren't going to irrigate, you'll likely need mulch, and shade. Read about the specific conditions the plants need, shade, air on the roots, soil moisture, pH level. Flower trimming based on gender. Root splitting cultivation, and runner wilding. There's a lot of things specific to species, and cultivars. Roots can go down [1.. ..2 ] meters for most plants, fungus. So dig down till you hit hard pack, make sure you have the soil depth, and airation for whatever you plan on planting. Raised beds are always an option. If you get yellow greens you need more iron in the soil. Adding phosphate, can't hurt. Plant clover, vetch, legumes, or add nitrogen fertilizer directly. Soil testing kit can tell you if it's pointless to try without balancing the soil, and they aren't that expensive considering all the work involved in gardening. For pests you'll have to deal with whatever's local. Carrot flies, plastic barriers. Slugs, sugar soap traps, copper strips. General insect pests, potassium soaps, diatom shells.

Over the last few years i have grown a fascination with trees. I love the trees in the background of the video with the white flowers, it almost looks like puffy snow balls on the tree. What is the name of those trees.

That's cherry. The one in very back I guess is apple, but that said, I have never seen any fruit on it. Will check that in future... My personal favourite tree is mulberry, which I wanted to plant, but it's a bit weird to plant it on rented property.

@@IlusysSystems My grandparents had a Mulberry tree and as kids our hands were purple from mulberry juice after picking berries all day. My personal favourite tree is the Vachellia Tortilis (use to be Acacia Tortilis). It is a thorny tree with a beautiful flat top shape when mature and it is one of the most iconic trees in Africa. I am from South Africa and it is indigenous to the area I live. It is a pitty I don't have a garden to plant any trees.

Your carrots and beats need proper soil texture or they will grow fucked up, I've never grown carrots but think have heard that's the trick to them. I would use worm castings for most nutrient needs, so long the soil has organic material to breakdown and that sandy stuff to increase drainage if needed. EDIT: Compost should be a dark soil, not light colored and sandy, I think you might be right to speculate.

I'm just "some guy on KZitem" not a gardener but I always thought that carrots loved a sandy soil.

We had like 30mm in past month... And water table sits like at -2m pernamently so water usually isn't an issue here.
