I truly wish for good things for that parking lot! One thing I would like to see is a truly wonderful place for our retired citizens. If you have parents getting old and are trying to find an affordable place you know what I mean! Lastly, I think every city over a certain size should have a “Dignity Center” I’m seeing way too many old ladies here in Whittier that are homeless. We can do better Whittier.

There are already plenty of places for our elderly. I’d love to see more for our youth. Bowling, ice skating, roller blading. Family friendly centers would be great ❤

I miss Nickel Nickel. That was the spot to play arcade games before they took out the arcade inside the mall. I got my SNES at SEARS back when there was a SFS mall (now Walmart). Thanks for keeping us in the loop, bro. Peace!

Wow, so sad. The Sears, Macys, and Souplantation in LA Puente Mall closed also. Growing up my school clothes mostly came from Sears. So sad to see them closing.

I saw so many movies at the Whittwood Theatre. Kelly's Heroes, War of the Gargantuan, Blazing Saddles, House of Dark Shadows! Too many to remember and name!! Great video. Thanks for the memories

My mom took me to the Whittwood mall back in the 60's. I remember the Jolly Rodger restaurant, the cake place that had a window so you could watch the baker decorate cakes and of coarse all the Disney movies I saw at the theater. Thanks for the tour!

I bought a house in 1970 in Whittier. So many good memories at the enclosed Whittwood Mall🙋🏻♀️💯🙏🏼 I love my town, now I live a few blocks from there. A lot of changes

I remember when Whittwood opened. It had a bookstore! My heart near burst from gladness. I and my cousin got to spend the day there once while mom did errands. (Back then you didn't think twice about leaving pre-teens in a mall. Those were the days.)

One of my first jobs was at the Old Navy at the Old Whittwood Mall before and then again after it moved to the Quad. I was a seasonal employee 3 years running. I can still smell the food court when I think back on 96' Pizza, Chinese food mixed with Cinnabon.

Oh man, I was there when they were still building it! There was a school just over the main street. Worked at the Target for a bit. Would spend lunch breaks walking the length to see if anything new had come in between the anchor stores. For awhile it was just a beautician and a clothing shop.

I do not believe whittwood mall existed before it was enclosed? It was built as an enclosed mall then converted into an open mall. As he said in video Sears was never there until the late 90s.

Whittwood was a fantastic open air shopping center long before it was enclosed as a mall. Lots of great stores, bakeries, restaurants, etc.

I grew up in Whittier when Greenleaf ended at mulberry . There was a dairy and cows all the way up to where St Paul is located . It was known as Simmons field later and we rode motor cycles there all the way behind the old York Field .

So many great memories! When it was open air, we used to have lunch at Jolly Roger’s with friends after church every Sunday. I used to love watching the baker decorating cakes in the big window of the bakery. They even had a step for kids to stand on so we could see better. 15 cent hand scooped ice cream cones at Sav-on Drug Store where you could get anything needed for your school project at the last minute. Many happy hours picking out patterns and material at House of Fabric with Mom. I miss the John Greenleaf Whittier poem on the wall. Broadway always had fine home goods, beautiful things for your home. I hope something good goes in there.

Should be a movie theater next AMC its big enough whittier needs a new theater and that side of the town center parking is always available. With a brand new theater it would fill up real quick

Gosh, it's painful seeing that Sears so empty after years of business. Lots of wonderful memories going there and to the enclosed mall with my family. Miss that indoor experience so much!

The Sears location was the Broadway building. I do hope if Sears closes that the building is kept and a new business comes in. The building itself has memories for me.

I grew up just a few blocks from there and remember Whittwood well in the “open air” time. Left town to go to college in Oregon in 1971 and only came back for short visits. Worked at Farrell’s in High School (La Serna) and took my first girlfriend to a movie at the cinema (don’t recall what it was…you can probably guess why!). Lots of great memories…

I can confirm that this location will be “closing” soon, however we may convert it into one of our new Sears Concept Stores, we are currently in the process of converting the Sears in Burbank that we closed December 18 last year. Interesting fact that you may not know is that we have a 4th floor at that location which is where we store all our shopping carts and fixtures which we no longer allow to be used.

@@john-mc4zo I am a current member of Sears management, mainly focusing on the rollout of the New Side of Sears. We are expecting the remodel of the Burbank Sears to be done by the end of this year, however the exact opening date is still very far from being determined, opening next year is a possibility, however it is not looking as though that much time will be necessary as of now.

There was a movie theater right where those town homes are at next to the 24 hour. It was a Regal I believe. I remember seeing saving private Ryan, good burger, men in black, and the rug rats movie as a kid. But there’s no documentation of it anywhere that I can find. Would be neat to look into that if you can.

Same. Or at least, I miss how it WAS. Wouldn't go to the Golden State now. Whittier, La Mirada Library, Monte Vista Mustangs (H.S.) Aaron Bros art supplies, The ice skating rink, La Mirada Drive-In and Swapmeet, Whittwood movie theater, Whittwood Mall, Antique shops in La Habra by Nixon's old home. Disneyland and Knott's, heading south for Little Corona tidepools and the best ever SciFi store at Long Beach and mystery bookstore Sherlock's Home. sigh

I used to go there often mid to late 90s. I used to go to the Crown Books all the time. I was then and always have been a big reader. I used to go to the multiplex theater. It's where I saw Girl Interrupted, Fight Club and Phantom Menace among others.

We lived there when the Whittwood was all outdoors, then they enclosed it and we loved that! My first ever credit card was from The Broadway. Sad to see so many changes that aren't necessarily good for the people around the area. I hope that they come up with something nice for Whittwood. I had forgotten about Ferrell's! They were so good. Do you remember in Sears they had a candy counter. My mom always bought a small bag of bridge mix, or a long red and white bag of popcorn. Also a small coffee shop. Really good memories

Yes I do but it wasn’t Sears but The Broadway. Only when The Broadway went bankrupt in 1997 did the stores of it vanish with some em being Sears, others Macy’s and in high ass rich areaa Bloomingdale’s

It’s heartbreaking to see Sears go. I trust their appliances and don’t know what I’m going to do when I can’t turn to Sears if or when I need to replace. Just sad to see. I love that they’ve lasted for so long, beginning with those Sears catalogs. Shameful what the company who bought Sears did to a once fine American store.

Unfortunately businesses are evolving and if they dont adapt they'll go out of business. Blockbuster, Fry's Electronics, etc... Good memories, our present days will make more memories in the future.

I didn't recall Farrell's until you showed the pic. Probably only in it once or twice (dad couldn't afford much) but sad that the theater closed down just a short time before we left. Was there maybe a bit over a dozen times. Felt like luxury compared to the drive-ins.

Mom would sometimes shop at the Quad (switched to Whittwood Mall) and an aunt worked there (not at Sears though I had another relative who did.) It never to my knowledge held a bookstore so I wasn't a fan.

Thom McAn shoes, of course. Like Kinney's except McAn were typically in malls or Main Streets opposed to free standing stores, like Kinney's. They were everywhere in SoCal.
