When I first started as a truck driver, I used Google maps on my phone for navigation. Then I ended up going across the Golden Gate Bridge, and driving through downtown San Francisco in a 75 foot long tractor trailer. I was new though, so I kept with it. Then I ended up on a narrow windy mountain road that had me scraping trees with the nose of the tractor, the front of the trailer, and the rear of the trailer...all at the same time. After getting out of that, I bought a dedicated Truckers GPS the next day.

Always enjoy your videos…and they almost led to me hiring you folks! I had a project in Newport Beach that would involve lifting a 17K grease interceptor into a hole from a trailer. Immediately thought of Pepe’s, and I called. I went over what I needed with a person at the shop who answered the phone, and it turned out it was Joe - Josh’s dad and owner of Pepe’s! We had a wonderful 30 minute conversation about his business, life in general, and his love for his team, his son, and his new grandchild. It was the highlight of my day…what an awesome man! It turns out the 40 ton wrecker was going to be too heavy for the bridge into town, so working on an alternative. But I was so looking forward to using Pepe’s…maybe next time! Please tell your dad Fred says hi!!! Keep up the good work!! 😁👍

But then I've lived here 70 years...and know more than google... Funny to see people riding with me; they just can't/won't turn off the tracking and voice directions; cell phone addiction. As a professional driver-in-training we were told to study our route before starting the engine. As old as this exit 2:20 is it should be pretty clear as a not-to-do. But then many trucking companies are desperate these days to hire anybody to fill many open driving vacancies - And also given very little training. Very sad. And very dangerous!

OK so I'll learn something today! Josh, you and Alex sound exactly alike! I had a stroke a few years ago so I can't always see well. So I watch these videos and sometimes I miss a lot of things. 25 years ago I was a truck driver, so sometimes I'm quite critical of the way people today drive a big truck. That said, I love the videos of the large recoveries. And I love pepes for the great job that you do, and the things that I've learned from watching your videos. I've also found a new love of wanting to learn how to fly a drone. But that's a story for another time anyway I hope that I have not insulted anyone there. Cause you guys really do a fantastic job.

And there used to be a law, you had to be able to read English fluently, now you can take the test in many languages, I think that’s a mistake! When the Arroyo Seco freeway first opened my mom and dad decided to go for a Sunday drive on it. When he wanted to go off the roadway at the “off-ramp” he wanted, he drove up the very abrupt slope, didn’t stop at the top, and found us suddenly back on the “parkway” (as it was correctly designated at the time), and should never have been considered a freeway because it follows a meandering little creek. He used some words I didn’t recognize at the time and spent a half hour trying to get back to the street he wanted.

A lot of "new immigrant" drivers use a GPS designed for a car or pickup truck - because they're a hell of a lot cheaper than a truck/RV GPS (at least half price if not less). Companies won't pay for a truck GPS, and the directions you can get from your dispatcher are often from Google Maps which doesn't know (or care) that you're getting directions for a semi. I use a Garmin Dezl GPS that's got all the truck routes programmed into it, and I update it monthly. If used properly, it will show you a route that trucks can take - it won't send you onto something like the 110 Freeway where trucks can't go. I spent $400 US for that Garmin back in '19, and it's saved me a lot of trouble - especially on the Eastern Seaboard.

In about 30 years, CalTrans will probably put a sign up saying "No Truck Access" or something. Because they're on the ball like that. Or somebody will do it for them, and then they'll be forced to go replace it because presumably, the person who did that, didn't do it correctly.* *By the way, that actually happened in L.A. Here's the video of him doing exactly that. The funny part was CalTrans having to put on a happy face in the media. They aren't happy people. kzitem.info/news/bejne/k2xjmqN3i6mXeWk

As a driver trainer I've been asked many times about GPS units. I am in no way a technophobe, in fact I've been a computer hobbyist since the x86 platform came into use. Here is my advice, DO NOT rely on GPS units for your professional planning. You can use them but you should be using multiple means of route planning. 1: Use a paper map for your planning overview. 2: Get route instructions whenever you can. 3: Call the receiver for last mile instructions. 4: Don't take questionable short cuts. 5: California is in particular a bad state because many of its roads were built before modern standards and have still never been updated or reworked to those standards.
