I'd hardly call 1.76 million physical copies within 39 days a flop. It's a remake of a gamecube classic and not some AAA or even a AA title by today's standards. Even one million is quite solid. We will probably see an update as of September 30 when November hits. Also, this is something I need to remind people all the time; the list only includes physical copies that go to shelves. It does not include digital copies and it does not include copies bundled with Nintendo Switch units.

@@user-1mc0n4us.ed-_- A little confused; 3rd party stores that sell games? IIRC, those companies still bought the games from Nintendo shipments before selling them to others. Or do you mean Nintendo doesn't report sales for 3rd party titles? Well, it's not really Nintendo's job to keep track of those and the jobs of other companies; though it's still Nintendo's cartridge technology being sold. But obviously, if you look at Wikipedia's list of best selling Switch games, there are definitely a lot more games that sold in the millions; but most of those are either digital only or 3rd party ports. Minecraft reportedly only sold 5 million on that list, when it clearly sold a lot more than that. Microsoft reported Minecraft sales were better than they ever been with the Switch release alone. Games like Witcher 3 and Skyrim also sold more on Switch than they consistently have for any other platform with PC being the only real competition.

The important thing to remember is that sales numbers by themselves don't really mean that much about the overall success of a game, as there are a lot of factors that can significantly influence sales expectations. Numbers that would be seen as abysmal for some games could be seen as great for others. Considering all the factors going against the TTYD remake, such as releasing at the end of the Switch's life, releasing near the beginning of the summer when games sales as a whole tend to be lower, and being a remake rather than a brand-new game, I'd say 1.76 million in only a little over a month is actually pretty good. I highly doubt Nintendo was expecting it to match Origami King's numbers or even come that close to them for that matter. We obviously don't know how much it will continue to sell, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it's passed 2 million already.

So, a number of factors have to be considered when trying to compare Origami King to the TTYD remake as of right now. First, Origami King came out when lockdowns were being lifted in most places, and thanks to government money, people had extra to spend. Plus, many became gamers, even if just casually. Compare that to now when people are struggling to survive, and it's understandable why TTYD, from a first quarter standpoint, might seem like a flop by comparison. But we'll have to wait for lifetime sales to know for certain. All in all, it's not bad for a 20 year old game to have sold almost close to its previous lifetime sales in its few weeks is nothing to sneeze at.

@xionvixon3387 True. As I said at the end of my comment that it came close to lifetime sales of the original in just a few weeks. However, one thing we should also consider that I just thought about is that these numbers only count for physical sales of the game and not all sales. Digital game sales are not revealed by Nintendo, so it's possible that TTYD in both physical and digital have already surpassed the original lifetime sales and are at least close to Origami King in terms of first quarter sales. We don't actually know and probably never will.

A part of me was hopeful the TTYD remake would outsell Origami King, but in hindsight, that most likely never would've happened due to, as you have stated in the video, the game releasing near the end of the Switch's life and Origami King releasing during [what I believe to be] the peak of the Switch's popularity, during a time where not many games were being released and the collapse of civilization....uh, I mean the pandemic. Despite this, however, I also never really worried all that much about the future of Paper Mario or Mario RPGs. Part of that can chalked up to me being too busy with my personal life to really think about it, but I also feel like whatever Nintendo wanted to do with Mario RPGs.. they set out to do it and succeeded in some way. I have no idea what's on the table going forward, but I'm not really worried. I believe we don't have anything to worry about, but only time can tell

The remake was selling faster than the original's 1.91 million lifetime sales and it was only out for a month. I'll admit wanting the game to outsell Origami King was a little extreme considering we're at the end of the Switche's life, so I'm guessing it'll do maybe 2 and a half million or 3 million, just enough for Nintendo to go "Alright... we'll try this for a new game".

NES sold 60+ million units. SNES worse. N64 worse. GC even worse. GC sold 20+ million units. Look at the penetration for Paper Mario 1000 on GC vs Switch (140 million consoles = 7X GC). The Switch version is selling okay, but not good. Some factors that makes it sell bad: 1 - it's a 60 dollar game? Not 40... 2 - released close to summer! 3 - after some bad years with high inflation and high rates to beat inflation which hurts peoples' wallets 4 - Nintendo is releasing "one Mario game every 2 months". 5 - end of Switch's lifespan 6 - this is the ~20th Mario game on Switch Just based on these factors, this remake/remaster is selling pretty good. I wish it will sell even better. I bought it on the release weekend! I hope they can rerelease the Wii game also! That game is more like Super Mario Bros 1 & 3 but with a twist :)

If you're comparing the sales of TTYD to Origami King, compare it to the other, higher-selling Mario RPGS. Super Paper Mario sold almost 4 and a half million while Bowser's Inside Story sold a little bit more than that. Comparatively, I think for releasing around the end of the Switch's life on top of releasing between two already highly regarded/anticipated Mario RPGs, WITHOUT immediately considering the sales it will make later this year, I think it sold amazingly so far! With some time, I'm sure we'll see some real good numbers. It also helps to point out that TOK sold during the pandemic (look at Animal Crossing) as well as there were a big catalog of games for the Switch near the end of 2023 and all the way to now. Stay hopeful gamers!
@lpfan4491

Well, it's...obviously kinda not? People often reference Origami King and that the original TTYD had a much less successful console, but RPGs don't really scale like that(If they did, TTYD Switch would have had to outsell all games under the Persona 5 branding combined to keep up with GC TTYD's ratios because "the Switch has such a magnitude of more potential customers"), not even for Mario. If anything, these two releases only make TTYD Switch's first month sales look smaller because they were disgustingly overperforming by genre standards if we take the ratios literally. Super Paper Mario also sold incredibly well for RPG standards, but that was an action RPG and jumping is what Mario is known for, so it argubly does not really qualify for the metric. As a sidenote: Nevermind that the Switch is literally on its way out btw, that is an important factor for games that people often forget. People also claim that Fire Emblem Echoes did poorly because it only managed one milion and those people are legitimately out of their mind. That game sold 80% of its initial japan shipment and actually went on to *sell more 3DS units*, when they just released it as a filler game, expecting it to just soak up residual sales from existing system owners. Context matters a lot.

Its most likely surpassed 2 million by now at least Also more to add on your point about Mario kart, Party, 2D and 3D games outselling, yeah of course RPGs are a more niche audience, with only a couple really hitting somewhere close to those numbers being something like Final Fantasy or Pokemon.

Remakes that come out near the end of a console generation historically sell less. Using Fire Emblem as an example: Fire Emblem Gaiden, Thracia 776, Path of Radiance, Shadows of Valentia, Engage all released near the end of console generations and did worse than their previous console itterations whenever applicable. The remake all sold even worse than their console brethrens comparatively. For Path of Radiance, Shadows of Valentia and Thracia 776, they sold especially poorly. For all three, the successor was either announced or released, making this even worse. End of console lifespan plus remake plus successor expected is the worst combination for sales. TTYD did pretty good considering.

The QoL stuff and new additions are awesome too. I can't go back to the original now and I will always enjoy TTYD Remake as my favorite game of all time!! :)

I would say further reasons to why TTYD remake didn't sell that great are: 1. It's not a new game so some people might feel like they don't need to buy it. 2. It's not the first Paper Mario game on Switch and casual gamers are less inclined to buy another game in the same series on the same console. 3. Due to controvertial changes like the 30 fps and the "censorship" some people might've been convinced to boycott the game. A new Paper Mario game on the next console would not be affected by these 3 points and hopefully Nintendo was convinced to make more games like TTYD so they can see how popular this formula truly is.

I get that OK had a lot more going in its favor but I would like to meet someone who bought that and skipper TYD and ask them why Also I know you referenced it and I have seen it too but people who say Arms flopped, what are they talking about? It did well for a new IP. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Arms 2. Wonder if they think Astral Chain flopped too? (it didn’t). People see 20+ mil sellers and think a game needs to hit 10+ mil to be a success but that’s not the case, very few games hit that mark

It just goes to show that online hype is massively overrated. Massively. The way people talked about it doesn't match up to what it sold at all. Like, no, it's not a flop. It's ok when you factor in context. But to be on similar footing with Luigi's Mansion 2 HD and the Peach game? Yikes.

i got completely tricked by the internet's discourse, i completely ate up the "this is war, we need ttyd to outsell origami king 10 to 1 on release day, we need to send a message, save the franchise" argument, so i preordered it. the game is as good as the original, but really there was no need to preorder, considering it can be bought for way cheaper now and origami king is still the best seller. never preordering anything again.

personally, im not really that concerned about sales and stuff. I just wanted it to outsell origami king bc i care about the direction of the series and that would help. Honestly though, i think the good press they got for this remaster was really a stark contrast to the awful press they got for the modern paper mario games, so call me naive, but i think the next paper mario will be a functional RPG lol…maybe theyll indulge. In some paper gimmicks tho

We can only hope this game blows back up for the holiday rush. Ngl for a remaster for a wacky game from 2004 it doesn’t seem bad but this game deserves MUCH BETTER. Not just because the original game is so good and magical, but because they put so much effort and heart and soul to the remake. They refurbished every little thing, in such perfect minute detail. They didn’t just remake every single song in the game. They added more when they didn’t need to add extensions that fit in so perfectly. If you didn’t know that those are new additions to the song you think it was untouched, that’s how well the extensions fit into the rest of this song.

Counter point to "Paper Mario TTYD Remake didn't sell as well as Origami King" is a line that is only spoken because origami king was getting close to being the final nail in the coffin for the series. Paper Mario TTYD is suffering from many games worth of degraded perceived value and quality, AND gameplay mechanics (sticker star, you suck). So if we had swapped origami king release date with this game, I think it'd do better. Also I do not think Nintendo spent nearly as much on marketing.

I'd have bought the remake of tii werent for 2 reasons; 1. I already have the original and still enjoy it to this day as is. 2. It has almost no new content from the original, the only diffrence is a couple post game bosses. So not really worth the 60$ price tag for my situation

Unfortunately most of the Switch games underperform (in terms of what we would consider “a lot” of sales) 1-3 million copies translates to 60-100 million dollars, which is usually more than enough to make a healthy profit on, but usually over 5 million is what the fans would consider a “success” And most Switch games don’t go over that, be it Metroid, Paper Mario, etc With the 140 million copies of Switch sold you’d think that being above 10million copies for any given game would be a far more common occurrence, I think people just don’t have the money for games they don’t really hear about or even slightly unsure of Most of my normal friends who don’t watch gaming KZitem or anything like that didn’t even know about TTYD remake, or Metroid prime remake, or MOST switch games Even the ones they have heard of, they aren’t likely to buy at full price, its just to expensive in this current economy

Many people think that Paper Mario is more successful than Mario and Luigi, technically that is true but Mario and Luigi has a more loyal fan base than Paper Mario, because Mario and Luigi is just a much more consistent series, even Paper Jam is 100 times better than Sticker star
@rainpooper7088
6 күн бұрын
Paper Jam still has more in common with the first four Mario&Luigi titles than Sticker Star did with the first three Paper Mario games, let's put it this way. I don't think people would complain at all if they used the battle system from Paper Jam as long as they had a decent budget and put in more interesting enemies to fight.
@joopvanhedel1372
6 күн бұрын
@@rainpooper7088 Indeed that would have been great. The biggest problem sticker star and color splash was that the battle system was just not fun, Super had the amazing story to make up for it, but those two games didn't have that. Paper Jam not only had the battle system that Mario and Luigi is what it is but perfected it. From the trailer we saw brothership not only has the battle system we love but the gameplay is even more enhanced by making every normal jump and hammer attack also brother attacks

I was kinda hoping for this game to flop. I knew it would appeal to the niche audience of 20-30 year old who think the original is so great that no other Paper Mario since can top it, but I felt that the game wouldn’t appeal much to an outside demographic, just like Mario Party Superstars. If anything, hopefully Nintendo will learn from the TTYD remaster and make a new Paper Mario game that blends old and new to appeal to everyone.

I don't think it means anything.. Releasing "crap" products for YEARS.. and then re-releasing an actually good one, is of course going to do well. Considering how beloved it is, as well. But this isn't a formula worth repeating. It also doesn't not eliminate Nintendo's most recent incapability to capture the magic of their older products.. nor being capable of giving people what they want, or what they didn't even know they needed. Had they remade the better Paper Mario 64.. I would have bought it, because I'm biased. This iterative release? Nah.. hard pass.

Mario RPG sold a ton, RPGs w/ the same core formula that are turn-based like Dragon Quest, Pokémon, & SMT still sell extremely well & are received very well too (Pokémon considerably less so tbf). If you're not an RPG guy I get it, but every time I see commenters say this for the last several years in lieu of specifically Paper Mario, it screams bias w/ no basis when those series/games & dozens more prove nothing about them & TTYD's outdated & Nintendo's been ramping up Mario RPG titles anyways, showing there is a clear demand for turn-based Mario RPGs.

I honestly believe, that TTYD should NOT have had a remake on Switch. Not right now. Or at least they should had it released it in Mario's RPG stead (in terms of order). This TTYD for the best chances should habe been the "Switch 2" equivalent of Super Mario 3D World, as in a re-release but make "early" on that new Nintendo System as I think that the end of the Switch's lifecycle and after all these Mario Games that are in competition with it kinda hurt it. I think they DEFINITELY should port it early to the "Switch 2" , directly after the bra'd new 3D Mario we're practically sure to get. Make it 60fps if they can thanks to the new hardware and maybe discount it to 50 ? (The discount is never happening lmao) That would probably help it make a great splash!

I'm really sorry, I genuinely am because I straight up have to be missing something here as this is one of multiple comments under this video outlining this, but as much as I truly understand saving the integrity or faithfulness of an original version of a product anywhere, solely wholly whining about a trans character in a Mario game like she's the first, no catcalling or omitting freak/stupid like the core fundamental experience, in gameplay, writing, story, atmosphere, anything, of the game's completely ruined by either of these or the vast majority of consumers in the market specifically for TTYD are actively looking for stuff like this as a crux to persuade them to buy or ignore this game is genuinely insanely delusional or ridiculously dedicated lying. Again, I'm sorry, I sound like an ignorant asshole saying all this but I really have to wonder if you truly cared about the game to begin with if this was all there was to it. Because I can't overstate how I do not get it for as much as this is shoved in my face.

Honestly, I love Paper Mario: The Origami King better than Paper Mario 64 and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Remake. I only played 3 games in their series. I never played the original Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for the GameCube. However, the Remake is a fantastic game, but what made made it go lower for me than Paper Mario: The Origami King was that there were too much backtracking, and started to feel like chores. Also, I didn't like the idea of Vivian. He is supposedly a male, a femboy, that wants to be a female, and I think he ended up kissing Mario on the cheek. I don't agree with woke things like that, so it didn't sit well with me. Other than that, it was, or is, a masterpiece.

I think TTYDR is catering towards adults more than children. Kids don't really care about the RPG genre because it requires reading and thinking ways to play while children play games to turn their brains off from reality. Not to mention how Brothership is gonna copete as a newer title for the holiday season is deleting TTYDR too. Mario & Luigi series sells more than Paper Mario over the years; hell, even recent Fire Emblem titles since Fates outsold Paper Mario games except maybe when TTYDR already outsell Engage.

It did flop. It's not a complete "sold literally a dozen copies and led the Studio to bankrupcy" failure, but it didn't sell what Nintendo clearly expected it would sell. They went all in with the marketing, they revealed it at the end of a direct, they put Goombella and Koops in SMR... Yet, despite all this, LM2HD still managed to sell nearly as many copies in just 2 days. And I'm glad too, because I hated many of the changes made to the remake (Vivian, the way they removed all words like "stupid") and also because it goes to show how insular the hate for Modern Paper Mario is, people in general like it, they like it more than Toads with hair and a quirky backstory.
@SuperMarioT

Nintendo in the same fiscal meeting: Sales for TTYD, alongside Peach Showtime, were solid & stable. >> "It didn't sell what Nintendo clearly expected it would sell." Dude, this is blatant biased projection. You're saying how insular modern Paper Mario opposition is, and you're literally acting insular anyways. It's so obvious. Expecting any Paper Mario to outsell any Luigi's Mansion when every Luigi's Mansion especially 3 outsold every Paper Mario by wide margin is foolish, any collab for an 8 year old mobile game borderline nobody plays outside of raking Platinum Points on My Nintendo being given stake in a current game's sales feels even worse when Mario Wonder or LM2 had zero relation to their sales, success or popularity, the marketing angle I get but they've been sharing similar or the same amount of marketing if not more for many Switch games prior to TTYD & just recently Zelda Echoes of Wisdom & Mario & Luigi, and believe me, I understand maintaining an original version's integrity & faithfulness, you're free to dislike or oppose the localization stuff, the opinionated part's not the issue, but solely basing any positive or negative sales based on removing stupid or freak or making a Mario character trans, like the vast majority of people care about that sort of thing buying any game or like it changes the core fundamental experience, I'm sorry, is really delusional. I genuinely do not get this hyperfixation on this in particular, especially when the core TTYD experience both 99% everywhere else & the fundamental meaning & message under what they did change/censor is still intact.
