Utah thinks it is major league. Then again, so does every city and town in America. People in Norfolk think they could support a professional sports team. Folks in Nebraska will say the same thing. And as someone from Sacramento, I believe our town could definitely support more franchises.
But for Utah, that dream is close to becoming reality. The NHL to Salt Lake City is seen as a formality at this point while a comprehensive bid for MLB expansion has placed it on the shortlist for baseball. However, one question that isn’t getting talked about enough is can the region truly support this influx of major league sports.
Now, some will say Utah fans are passionate and will support their team through thick and thin. We don’t have any evidence of that. And we certainly don’t have any evidence of that when there is competition from other teams.
Even with a growing population, that market is still limited. Maybe it supports three winning teams but that’s not how sports work. And, if we are being honest, Utah has been extremely lucky by having winning franchises over the years. You don’t know how truly loyal a fanbase is until they ride and die with you through some dark days. Is that Utah? Maybe, maybe not.
