There's something about physical that can never be replaced. Although, I think you are correct about AR being better than VR in that regard. Doesn't mean VR won't have a fantastic place if done correctly. I bought into VR for indoor exercise for my kids at the start of the pandemic and it has immensely enriched our lives.

I just took my 2 headsets over to a friends house and we played Demeo together locally. No set up time was a HUGE factor in the fun we had. Did you notice Tilt 5 now claims you need a PC per headset? The last update has that info.

WHAAT?! A PC per headset?! That's bad news. Does each need a powerful graphics card?

I totally agree, VR is great, but more like a video game. Whereas AR has a lot of potential in the tabletop realm and is definitely going to be pushing the limits in the next decade. I'm excited to see more things like those holographic glasses. Great video!

Eventually, it will. I guess you are a VR Virgin to say something like that. Have you play Demeo with friends?

Yes it can, for the majority of people, that does not mean there won’t be people playing in the real world, but it will be marginal. Just like video games have replaced most physical entertainment.

I was a big gamer so this seems the next step. Few weeks ago I tried my nephews VR and the game Alvo. After a few minutes I got a bad bout of nausea and and to take it off because I almost threw up. That was the PlayStation version, so maybe this new one with the higher resolution would have less negative effects on me? I had a successful implementation of AR about 4 years ago with our middle school yearbook. Students were able to use their phone on certain pictures and a video would start playing. It was pretty cool, but HP bought the company and shut that down. so it doesnt work on their yearbooks anymore lol.

Yeah, I can't handle a lot of crazy movement or I get motion sickness, like the roller coaster sims or the game Echo VR. Other than Demeo, I really like Beat Saber and a bunch of free stuff to watch like from National Geographic. Boy, that makes me sound old!

Demeo is a lot of fun. I've yet to play it with others, but even single player is a lot of fun. I think there is a major overlap (think Venn Diagram) between VR and Tabletop. When you have little kids, getting out to play I have found to be a LOT harder. (Well, at least a lot harder with my current one, my daughter was not difficult). Something like this lets me play mini games with friends even if I can't get together with them. Demeo gives me a lot of hope for more games like that. Even skirmish games. (Or, imagine Imperial Assault). AR, I do think will be cool for miniatures. Like you said, you can look at units and get their cards/information fed to you. You could have terrain on the board and the game knows the rules for it, to reduce rules questions/problems. Ultimately, it would be an extension of the tabletop experience, where VR replaces it. I got a Quest 2 for my birthday back in Feb. There are a TON of great games for it. Wizards is a lot of fun, you feel like you are casting spells. Movement may cause problems. From my understanding, higher frame rates helps reduce the vertigo/nausea. Also, the other awesome part of the Q2 is WIRELESS tethering. I purchased virtual desktop and my router is upstairs, while where I play is downstairs. It plays great. (But, I am right below the router). I've honestly really reduced my gaming on desktop and play a lot more on my Q2 or PCVR. It's just a very different experience. I also play Elite Dangerous and between VR + HOTAS... holy crap it is one of the greatest gaming experiences of all time. My family enjoys it so much, that they bought me another Q2 so we can play games multiplayer together. Plus, with 3D Printing, you can create rifle stocks if you want to play FPS shooters and get a better feel. (It helps a LOT, not to just have your hands hanging in space). Mounts for your Q2, better head pieces to make it easier to rest on your head, battery holder to play longer (and balance the headband better), Zenni glasses inserts if you need prescription glasses on the cheap. So, 3D Printing and VR go together well, too. :-)

Thanks for sharing your experience! I just googled Elite Dangerous + HOTAS and that looks amazing! Tempting to create that setup but might not go over well with the wife to be in VR exploring the galaxy in real time... 😉

@@gaminggeek241 Star Wars Squadrons also works with HOTAS and VR. ;-) Just to get you in more trouble. From a pure gaming perspective, melee games have not always given the best game play, especially from a first person perspective. I love how so many games let you wield swords or other melee weapons and they "feel" good. Check out r/vrgamedeals on reddit for weekly deals. Mostly, they involve Steam VR or other platforms that go to Steam. But, I have picked up a ton of VR games on the cheap through that platform.

@@KevinRank You are getting me into more trouble! Star Wars Squadron looks more up my alley than Elite Dangerous. I'm worried though that I might get motion sickness--I can't play Echo VR without getting sick. Is it better in Star Wars Squadron?

@@gaminggeek241 It's a very different experience. I find movement can induce a little nausea when moving in some games. There is "comfortable" which tends to not have that. Movement in Echo is more free form but I don't suffer from it in Echo VR. If you have either of those games, just try it in VR. You don't need the HOTAS setup (but it will make for a better experience, IMO). I used a game pad before upgrading. It's hard to explain the difference in sensation between walking/moving games and flying games. Though, ultrawings is a game that is a little inducing. In Elite Dangerous, I look around like I am in cockpit. It doesn't feel "odd". I think they worked hard to get the movement and POV down. I really do think a smoother experience with a high frame rate helps too. I have Dragonride VR (it looked/sounded cool) but it is one that I have a little struggle with (you would probably want to avoid it). So I know games can give me that sick sensation. I understand being worried about it. An option, is to get it, and try it out with a gamepad and refund it if it does cause you problems (store.steampowered.com/steam_refunds/). I did go with the Thrustmaster T.16000M HOTAS setup. (Mainly because finding just the throttle is very hard right now and nearly the same price) and then picked up a Gladiator NXT for my stick. For the Thrustmaster, you can 3D Print a new carriage for it, that is smoother. The one it comes with is just plastic running over metal rails. The 3D Printed one lets you put bearings in place that run down the rail.

I think AR/VR is a great way to experience dungeon crawlers but will be in addition too not a replacement. Its a great way to play over the internet with friends and family that live far away. Im hoping for a HeroQuest port

I think AR will be a major game changer for Table top gaming. You can enhance the gaming experience, not replace it like with VR. I think AR can be beneficial in the form of Game aides, to help players understand the movements and rules, and embellishments like vfx and sound fx. I'd also like to see things like random events. Instead of rolling on table, the game could 'push' you the events. Imagine opening a door and the AR tells you where to place the enemy models, and when you place them they have a little vfx and sfx.

Yeah, you're right, Colin, I think AR will enhance TT gaming rather than taking over. How long do you think it will be before we see the kind of effects you mention? 5 years? 10?
@MarquisDeSang

Yes it is gonna take over TT Gaming : most people will play in VR in the future. But it won’t replace the physical version, it just will less popular. Just like video games have replace boardgames (for most people.) The thing that will change the TT world will Augmented Reality, where you will have real stuff on your table, but improved with AR stuff.
