I never knew that measurement for bike size, my giant hybrid is an XL. I’m going to measure it tomorrow. Great informative video !

I've never considered you can change the reach of the bike by changing out the seatpost. Useful info!
@theshedMTB

Your not really changing the reach- thats basically set in place by the frame- but you can move the seat to make it fit you better! Measuring from the bars to the seat was just a way of knowing how much i was changing things. Thanks for watching!

It won't make it fit better, nor change the reach. reach measurement is above centre of bottom bracket to centre of head tube. On my bike the seat tube angle is quite steep. with my saddle and bike saddle tip ends up being at the centre of BB, I use mid foot position. I ride a Geometron G1. I love how it handle, and it fits me well. The geometry is very different to how enduro, freeride bikes were before, or even a mountain bike in general. But this type of geometry has become the norm for enduro, downhill. but steep seat tube and longer reach is getting into XC bikes too.

Enduro bikes tend to have super short stems for direct steering, but some trail bikes might have 40 or 50mm, wheelbase is shorter, not as slack head tube angle, a shorter wheelbase is nice when you have to park a bike in a tighter space. some ride a smaller size with longer stem, some larger size with shorter stem. different bikes for different uses, of course there are exceptions to the rule. there are XC bikes as slack as trail bikes and trail bikes as slack as enduro bikes. some custom bikes too.

For me effective top tube length does not matter as I look at reach for reach, and low top tube for great standover, low seat tube for low saddle, and straight seat tube for long insertion depth. On my bike the saddle tip is above the BB. I use mid foot position. On old school geometry you sit too far back, so this means fatigue and knee pain. Moving saddle back to make the bike bigger does not work, as you move feet farther back on the pedals, get worse pedalling. So modern bikes have steep seat tube angle.Short stem gives direct steering, as hands are aligned with the steerer tube, so reach has to be increased to account for that. a slack head tube angle gives less sensitive steering, so you get sensible steering, not super sensitive and twitchy like odler bikes. Higher the stem is placed shorter the effective reach is, lower it is longer it is. and for handlebar height you can adjust it by getting a taller or lower rise bar. But if the bike is too small this won't solve the fit issues. These are adjustments to make a bike fit just right. Adding a long stem to a bike will result in swinging the handlebar instead of turning it. This feels horrible. Thus modern bikes have short stem for direct steering.

You make good points, and what I put in a video was basically what I did to make my bike fit me better. Obviously I didn't change any of the actual physical parameters, but the bike fit me way better afterward.

5:41 I guess that seat post simply is junk, not all single bolt saddle are bad, but as it uses notches the adjustment is not as presise. I don't know who actually makes them as I've seen Scott without branding, GT bikes with same post, branded as GT. I have used Bontrager SSR seat posts they came on the old bikes. I never stripped them.

awful idea, you need a larger frame, but the issue is not all brands offer that. I am 181cm and I am above what some brands offer, going by number I know will fit me. sitting further back is a bodge, it results in worse pedalling, harder to pedal, knees get abused, same if too much forward, so need to find the sweet spot.

@@mtbboy1993 You always want to find the right size frame that works for you but when the top tube is a bit short I do find that putting a layback seat post or a longer stem (depending on the build) helps me ride with more comfort . I know it's not the ideal situation but I usually work on second hand bikes and can't really ask for a taller size

S M L and seat tube sizing (17, 19, 21) is not exactly my cup of tea, but I find specialized S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 sizing to be good because they convey how one height can ride many sizes based on type of riding/size preference. I find reach and top tube to be important to me as my torso contributes more to my height than my legs.
