In this video, we’re looking into some of the myths surrounding the cooking oil.
Let’s start with the fact that seed oils, which make up a significant portion of our daily calories (around 25% to 30%), are not what they seem. Despite being labeled as vegetable oils, they actually come from seeds, not vegetables. These oils undergo intense industrial processing, where they’re heated and mixed with solvents like hexane, a chemical found in gasoline, to make them shelf-stable for long periods.
When you deep fry processed foods in these seed oils, you’re exposing them to a combination of sugar, fat, and high heat. This triggers a reaction called glycation, leading to the formation of sticky proteins in your body, which are harmful to your health.
Moreover, the oils used in fast food are often reheated and reused multiple times, becoming increasingly toxic with each use. Originally, seed oils weren’t even intended for human consumption. They are highly detrimental to your mitochondria and contribute to insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, obesity, heart disease, and even cancer.
Among seed oils, soybean oil is the most harmful, followed by corn oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil. Traditional mustard oil carries the risk of having a too-high concentration of Erucic acid. For healthier frying options, consider using oils like olive oil, butter, or ghee or their blend with the canola oil. However, it’s essential to cook at low to medium heat. Air-frying, and stir-frying are much better alternatives to deep-frying at high temperatures.
