"How Can I Keep From Singing?" is an American Baptist hymn composed by Robert W. Lowry around the year 1869. Its lyrics talk about how it's both joyful and necessary to make music when the world is suffering. It reminds me of a quote by Leonard Bernstein: "This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before." In 2020, the many challenges Americans face both individually and as a nation inspired me to write this arrangement. The music is within us; it is our duty to ourselves and to the world to share it and spread it. How can we keep from making music when those around us so desperately need it?
I hope you find a little bit of joy and meaning in one of my favorite hymns.

DISCLAIMER: I do not actually play the trumpet! I pre-recorded the trumpet parts down an octave on a Mack euphonium (courtesy of Don Willems), and pitched them up using software. Similarly, the euphonium part is pitched up a perfect 5th to mimic the French horn.
