I was one of the officials at this event held in Seattle. Regardless of what any of his detractors may say this was a very impressive feat. I have known Russell McCartney for many years and this was the most impressive thing I ever saw him do

I like the way he moves. Some of the strikes are clearly coming from the hip but even those that comes from the arms are made with such an easiness of movement. I feel honored to be able to watch this.

Wonderful! I'm so glad that people in the West are keeping the art of Tameshigiri alive, Nakamura-sensei would be pleased! This art is slowly dying here in Japan, I am trying to promote it in the UK where we are usually based. If I may ask, what blade did McCartney-sensei use for this record? If he plans on attempting to better it, we would love to supply him with a shinken to use for this. 宜しくお願いいたします!

Your consistence speaks to your skill. Where the sword should start to dull and have difficulty cutting easily, you got smoother in your delivery, so it actually cut as smooth or smoother as you went. Very impressive.

Mr.furtfjh You should notice what he cuts. It is not a slender bamboo which is used in Chinese or Korean cutting contest or cutting show. If you consider the tens of target as real enemies,the best way is to run and run to escape. This is only a cutting contest how many times can a man cut. I believe he did a greate job.

Yes, he did have to go to the hospital afterwards. Connected movements, cutting to multiple targets in multiple directions in the flow of movement is one of the trademarks of Ishi Yama Ryu and as far as I know, is not seen in any other style to this extent.

Now, the resolution is limited, but from what i saw, there was next to no flutter and not once did I see you skim into a shower of rice... Subway in the background... wonder if Subway got any commercial ideas from this? On topic, to me (who has never practiced with a katana) this is absolutely amazing. To top it off, less than an hour and a half? Wow... I've seen people swing a stick before and tire out in less than minutes. To go on for that long with competent form is amazing, I think.

If a common person held a katana and tried to cut one of those rolls, would it be impossible, or really hard?
@Chiperdada

not to be an ass, but I've sent plenty of kiriage cuts flying off the target, even while completing the cut. Its not about the target being incorrectly placed, it is often a result of how tight the mats are rolled. If the cut is good enough, and it has enough power at a great angle, I don't care how loose the mat is, the target wont come flying off. i'd put my money on the fact that he was just getting tired, which is very understandable. its a respectable record and a great show of endurance

But prior to that i was self learning, but my first lesson on how to hold a Bokken and swing, simple basics, was vital. You need a teacher at some point. good luck.

@KcImport32 Well,,,Im sure forging the steel is important. But the truth is , that the question of how often the sword will need attention will be open and really up to the care it receives,... You drop a sword and you can harm the edge and it will need to be sharpened.,,,Thats why they teach us to hang on with the thumb when we bow...

a real katana can go dull in as little as 7 strikes (we're talking removing limb sharp though) thats why you dont block wiht the blade and why you try to end fights in one blow

The worlds sharpest blades aren't made of metals. Obsidian that is cut under pressure chips to form edges 3 nanometers thick. that is .000000003meters thick, no human effort can craft a blade that sharp. They are commonly used in scalpels for heart and brain surgeries. I have some.

Consider the tens of targets as real enemies? this isn't a fucking movie first of all, if your fighting, even 10 targets, your fucked. especially if there warriors. AKA 10 SWORDS coming in at you from every angle, your fucked from the beginning, i dont care how fast you are. and this is Iaido. a non-combat martial art. Now, if this was hand to hand combat, taking on 10 targets becomes more tangible, if you practice a practical martial art that is effective. which is about 1% of martial arts IMO

I think (take note of how i said "I think") that if you were in the edo era this would be the crappiest swordsmanship ever. Sword are used to kill no matter how you look at that all you did was be slow and and accurate. I bet ten girls underwares that there were 100s of other people at that time that could have cut 30 times faster and more precise.
@p00kietanuki

You don't like this kind of cutting because you are incapable of cutting with such fluidity in your movements and you feel threatened that modern sword styles are rewriting and changing traditional sword theory. kzitem.info/news/bejne/x66j13-GbGSJqGU that is supposedly a 7th dan cutting one target of a traditional style. He can't even aim well enough to not cut a yama giri in his third cut. If this is what you think good cutting is, then I don't want to be right.
