Oceanic is a concept album (presumably told non-chronologically, or told through memories). The starting point of the story is an emotionally broken man who falls in love with a woman (The Beginning and the End), but discovers that she has an incestuous relationship with her brother (Hym/the Other). Unable to stop the relationship, the protagonist commits suicide by drowning (From Sinking) and dissolves in the elemental force of the water, which also brings redemption (Carry) to his initially described longing for belonging and togetherness (the Beginning and the End). A consistent theme throughout the album, as well as other releases by the band (e.g. Red Sea EP and Celestial), is water as an allegory for femininity and female power.

Oceanic is possibly my favorite album of theirs..., along with Panopticon, In the Absence of Truth and Celestial.....ok I just really love this band.... Keep the ISIS reactions coming!

I hold Oceanic and Panopticon as the two pillars of Isis’ discography. Love both those albums to pieces. I still hold the rest of their albums to a high regard but I feel like those two records solidified the band’s sound. “Weight” is one of those instrumentals that’s straight vibing music. Love the sequence between Carry, Maritime and Weight

Those two albums are true "albums". If you don't finish listening to the full album, you end up feeling incomplete. Lol in absent and wavering have some of their best songs ever recorded, but listen go the whole album sometimes can be long.

Fun fact: the male vocalist and the female guest vocalist on this track ended up getting married years later. Wonder if their relationship had anything to do with the content...

You’re mistaken, Aaron Turner is married to Faith Coloccia. The female vocalist on this song is Maria Christopher.

@@SanskarWagley You're right. It's been so long, my memory must have failed me on that one lol. I could have sworn Faith had a guest spot on one of their albums, but there's no record of it. Ahh! I think what I remember was in some of the live shows that Mamiffer opened for them, Faith filled in the female vocal parts on the corresponding Oceanic songs. I'm gonna stick with that story hahaha

Never run towards the hole in the ice, when your trying save someone. You should have rope, stick etc with you. Crawl the last meters towards the person you're helping. When you've got her/him on the ice you should crawl away few meters from the hole back to the thicker ice.

love this band, this song, THIS album! Particularly love that anyone is irritated by the length and composition of their music... says more about you than the band or the song. You're flawed, not them.

Yes! As someone who has drowned, I can confirm that once you inhale the water, you instantly become at peace. It's a really strange phenomenon.

I used to work CDAC so I was kinda adjacent to hospice some of the time. I've been around for a fair share of peoples' final moments and the weird thing is that for the most part, from my experience, there aren't really any final words. I mean, there is a thing that is the last thing they say, but it's usually nothing too different from the kind of stuff they'd usually say. Some people fight it until the end, but for the most part when people accept death is going to happen they become more like themselves.

Vin was right, the album {but I'd say all their albums actually are} is a concept album. The only way to really appreciate it is listening the whole album from start to finish. Doing that all timings do make more sense and the whole experience goes much better.

I agree but it's there for a reason, if it weren't there the last few heavy moments wouldn't be so impactful.
