I wouldn't put taqwacore as so much being a rebelion against islam as a rebellion against Western notions of Islam, fact is there are lots of liberal muslims like the members of the taqwacore scene, they just take it a bit further. I used to live in Indonesia, heavy metal is popular there. Islam isn't anywhere near as restrictive as people think it is.

1 year later..... "two young men became the first in modern Indonesian history today to be punished by the state for their homosexuality, and even by the conservative Islamic standards of Aceh province the sentence was steep - 85 lashes each of a rattan cane." - "Islam isn't anywhere near as restrictive as people think it is" - bullshit

Here you go showing off that you know nothing about Indonesia. Aceh is an autonomous region, even though it's officially the same country it is under a different government. It's been run by extremists since the tsunamis devastated the region. That's like confusing the Irish government with the IRA and thinking it somehow represents Catholicism. You also missed the actual recent controversy in Indonesia related to Islamic fundamentalism, where the former governor of Jakarta (a Christian) was arrested for blasphemy, but that really has nothing to do with Islam, it's entirely political.

Pendragon His characterization of Christian rock was a bit unfair. I think it also goes the other way. A lot of today's "Christian" bands actually more secular than Christian. The Christian music scene likes to ingest any band that shows a hit of being connected with Christianity. This, of course, leads to many bands being placed into a box against their will.
@ironwoman3592

As a kid, the only kind of music I listened to was either Disney or Christian. It's not that my parents forced that on me, it was just what I listened to on the radio because I liked it. I was in my late teens when I finally started listening to secular music, and though I remain a believer, I hardly ever listen to purely "Christian" music anymore. What Christian rock bands for me always were was a way to listen to the sounds and instrumentations that I liked while keeping the lyrics within boundaries I was comfortable with. So that's another reason that some bands do "Christian music."
@MatthiasPendragon
9 жыл бұрын
Taylor Stark I had a similar experience growing up. I don't listen to much straight up Christian music anymore either, mostly because most of it sounds the same and doesn't have much originality to it. Granted, it did take me a while in my teens to realize that being a believer didn't mean that I couldn't listen to anything but Christian music.
@gladitsnotme

I agree with you, but I think what Sam meant was kinda misinterpreted, or he misspoke. He was saying that Christian punk is pro-Christian, and often inspires people to seek Christ, whereas this taquacore is anti-conservative Islam and they would be beheaded if they performed in a Muslim country. So in that way, the 2 genres are not alike.

It took Christianity, what basically amounted to a war in the 1600 to finally anchor a divide in Christianity, with the formation of protestant groups of Christians. It then evolved and took off, diverging into countless different shades of Christianity. Perhaps we are starting too see this kind of divergence and acceptance in Islamic communities, in America.

Kyle Watts Ironic you say AFI, cuz Decemberunderground pretty much spearheaded the goth/emo wave in 2006. Their earlier stuff was definitely more aligned with punk though. But then again, WHAT THE FUCK DOES IT MATTER WHAT GENRE THE MUSIC IS?

honestly Underoath isn't really a good example, I would say use A Plea For Purging, and maybe xDeathstarx, and As I Lay Dying. But a Plea For Purging is more on the route of Taqwacore archtype of being on the fringe of faith, cause at least all throughout their music history, APFP (A Plea For Purging), always used this illustration of themselves being the big bad monster like "Malevolence", or even "Sons of Vipers, How Will You Escape the Judgement of Hell" the vocalist is referring to himself. In their final album "The Life and Death of A Plea For Purging" the whole album is an illustration of being pushed to the edges of faith, and even living on the edge pf borderline nihilism (it also had this story driven feel to it). Hell, the whole album of Depravity is about falling down into the depths of one's own.. well depravity, jumping the shark so far that you may not return. Now, even though I do not believe in any god necessarily (more of a nihilist), I still think APFP is the best Religious Metalcore band, because of their more humanistic approach to their faith (of being on the fringe faith), it gave me a different view on religious hard music nowadays, this was a band that pushed me further to Atheism. but hey that's just my opinion, I just wanted to say, you should have put them, instead of Underoath. I would honestly preferred The Chariot, or even MyChildren MyBride, anything else but Underoath.

They used to put out a 'zine called 'Death to the World'. It was a magazine that brought the punks into the idea of rebellion against the system, and worldliness, through faith in God. Haram and Eterez are some of the best anti-extremist islamic and anti-capitalist bands out there today and I wish they were included on the list. On the topic of Christian music, I've noticed that, not counting bands that have achieved mainstream success like Skillet, a lot of Christian rock sounds like watered down versions of secular rock, while a lot of Christian metal only differs from secular metal in terms of content to the point where I didn't even realize half the Christian bands I listened to were Christian until either I stumbled upon a song where they're praising God or I looked at their wikipedia page. I was genuinely surprised back in the day to find that a band with a name like "Demon Hunter" with a demon skull as their logo was Christian. I'm kind of curious why that difference is.

I don't get what you mean when you say they're on the fringe of their religiousness, does that mean they're still practicing and putting religion into their music? It seems contradictory to go against the establishment of when their beliefs uphold the things that brought about the establishment. (Though in this video it looks like the only thing you show is them opposing US sentimentality, which is a lot more lax when it comes to the conservative views you mentioned) Especially since you said they don't like the way their religion has conservative views on a lot of stuff, I dunno how the punk scene manages to co-exist with their religious beliefs.

Just to clarify, I am a Christian. I love how religions are making alternative music to their norm. But I am getting tired if hearing the same all vocal or acoustic guitar music over and over again. I could go to listening to rap or punk, but I don't like either of them. I think that we should not go into making only into punk, rock and rap, but also all genres of music for all religions. I would be down with listening to Islamic electronic music just as much as I would be down with listening to electronic Christian, atheist, Buddhist or any religious music. Because I think there should be more focus on the music of religious music rather then what they are talking about.

I knee there was an Islamic punk scene, but the documentary I saw on them, portrayed them more against the traditional Islam and rejected extremist Islamic groups.

This episode reminded me i should go dust off my underoath album, there pretty awesome! Being Christian and a musician I like that there are bands like this that make music they love with lyrics that express there faith. It's not praise music you would hear in church and that's not what its meant to be. It's just a band making music and singing about there faith. This particular kind of Islamic punk definitely seems more anti church, and a more liberal approach to Islam, compared to underoaths approach to Christianity. But I love that people will sing about there faith, and I'm glad to see that so far the comment section isn't just a big religious hate ground! You should be proud Sam

The quote that mentioned bands in Indonesia who are hardline and do not like gays most likely do not use the term "Taqwacore" and probably just call themselves hardcore or punk and do not like gays which is actually islamic. Homosexuality is punishable by death in true Shuriah law.

My views of Punk are equal to being unique. You can not be unique if you are trying to push a religion that promotes a sense of control.

I liked the video, but the idea that Christian punk is a trojan horse is a bit unfair... Many Christian punk bands really are genuine, that's kind of the idea of Christianity, being genuine, transparent, and loving the Lord. Not some, "HEY HEY HEY WE ARE COOL! COME TO OUR CHURCH NOW!" bs. It's a common stereotype and it's annoying... really annoying.

sleaf6 When you have these mega churches with a coffee shop, a pool, a ten minute sermon by a guy using the typical "cool teacher" method, and the rest of the service is live christian rock it's hard to not be cynical.

Jon Smith Oh yeah those, I totally agree, are not genuine... I'm referring to bands who started out without the install base of a mega church... those "bands" that are formed out of mega churches are paid to sing crappy soul-less music. I think many people would agree that worship should not be about getting paid by kissing the ass of the sermon "director"; but rather worship in your own style to your Creator... In a way it could be seen as wrong to worship ingenuously, it's kind of like spitting in His face.

sleaf6 Yeah, the scene was much more about making cool music while living within the (admittedly constrained) worldview of evangelical Christianity. It was a sub-genre w/in that religion that often got raised eyebrows from most of the rest of the Bible Belt community. T'was certainly not about co-opting and trying to make "church cool". While there were certainly overtly "preachy" bands (Headnoise, Officer Negative) they were def not mainstream; most Christian punk bands were just people trying to live Christian lives w/in a greater community that tolerated them more than actively embraced them.

sleaf6 So much this. The fact that so many people believe we just want to play to further the goals of a corrupt system honestly offends me. There are bands like For Today that talk about destroying the system entirely in their songs; doesn't sound like good old fashioned wholesome Christian talk to me. +Jon Smith I've played in a christian band for a while now. Believe me, they wouldn't have anything nearly as "hevy" as Underoath or us play at a megachurch (we're barely past Silverstein in terms of heaviness). And if we're invited to play at one, you can bet your ass we're not playing there.

I can totally understand why this isn't terribly popular. Most Muslims I know reject the violence that these bands seem to be pushing. It would be like a Christian band calling for violence. It wouldn't sit well with a vast majority of those actually of the faith.

I feel like on the Christian side of things, their hardcore scene was trying to solidify a faith that was dying. On the Islam side of things, I have no idea. I'm an atheist now, and was big into the religious hardcore scene. It was temporary.

"Islam don't have punk scene" Dude need to check out punk scene in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Some of them in the scene since 80s and we don't named it Islamic Punk. We just call it Punk Rock.
