Of all the Isle Royale videos, this one captures the backpacking experience the best. All those shots really brought me back. Excellent editing as well bravo

@@theparkjunkie I’ll have to give it a read. I’m going back in May to do the Feldtmann Loop. Tried to do it in September but the weather wasn’t cooperating and went to Hugginin Cove instead.

@@theparkjunkie that was amazing footage of the moose, how close would you say you were to the animal ? I have always read that if they decide to charge there is no escaping them

Fantastic Video! We went from Rock Harbor to Windigo, criss crossing the greenstone a couple of times during our 6 day backpack in 2016, I think...maybe 2015. Lol But, we are making plans to go back in 2022! So watching some videos to bring back memories and build up the excitement :D I think we are planning a canoe trip instead of backpack for next year. Thanks for sharing!

Oh hell yeah! I’ve done the Gstone & the Minong on two separate visits. But I was thinking my next trip would be a kayak trip around the island! I bet that would be awesome!!! Thanks for watching!

Hey! Great video! I am headed out there next week - I spend most of my trail miles in the Sierras, do you think Todd Harbor to Windigo in one day is feasible?
@theparkjunkie
3 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Thanks! So, the Sierras rule for a US training ground, so your game is likely strong. Nevertheless, I would urge you not to underestimate the wild nature of Isle Royale. The distance from Todd Harbor (not to be confused w Little Todd) is doable, but if you’re planning of taking the Minong, that is a badass day. 🤙 I came into Windigo from Grand Portage, then hiked to Desor, & got in about sunset. You’d be talking a few more miles, so with an early start, maybe… but that Minong can take a toll… it can sometimes morph into more of a well-defined route than a trail. So this can slow one’s progress. I’m in the Sierra now, but am stoked for you to find Isle Royale. I bet you’ll be pleased out there on the Minong, it’s absolute wilderness!

Go for it Green Man! You'll either love it & go back every chance you get, or hate it & never step foot on that island again. I'm betting on the former... Let me know if you have any questions. Cheers

How do you reach the rangers should you need assistance? Is there a radio freq available for emergencies? No info on website.

There is nothing in the way of communication on the island, but if you have a marine radio with you, the NPS & the Coast Guard monitor channel 16. Here's a link to the NPS safety page. www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/safety.htm

Which town did you ferry in from? And how long did the ferry take?

I like to take the Voyageur II out of Grand Portage, Minnesota. The ferry takes about two hours to get to Windigo. The Voyageur then circles the island, stops at McCargoe Cove, & arrives at Rock Harbor at 3pm. The boat will remain docked at Rock Harbor for the night, then return to Grand Portage the next day, with stops at Malone Bay & Windigo. Learn more on the Park Junkie guide to Isle Royale.
