My grandmother was first female mayor of Islington in 1938.She was also Labour Councillor and a Justice of the Peace. Mum was her Mayoress. They were a poor family. Father was also born in Islington in 1916.

Just canonbury square Islington and recognised the top of our road where we moved to from clerkenwell. Alwyne villas lead down towards canonbury road which then lead down to Essex road. And into new north road to old street.

Any on my bit of the Manor: Hornsey Islington, or Holloway Road area? Angel looked like the wealthy part of our borough even in the Edwardian Period, and doing very well, thank you. This was the belle epoch, just before the First World War, when plenty of Colonial cash was around, and many of the working classes were now moving into managerial jobs, and becoming shop assistants for the new stores growing up around the Angel- as seen in these excellent pictures above.

I know. Life was better with no NHS and living in slums with inadequate heating and outside toilets and no car or tv and then dying at fifty something from tb or some other horrible disease. Yep, life was definitely better. Lets not forget poverty was rife, There was no child welfare state or birth control options as we have today. Many children born were from poor families and expected to work because their families needed the money Many had a rough and hard life, often ending up in the workhouse or early death from disease. Stench were common. Apart from the smell from horses the sewerage system and sewage treatment methods were not as developed. The poor had few luxuries. ate food they could afford to buy, worked long hours, lived in damp, filthy conditions. Few houses had running water beyond one cold tap in the kitchen.

It’s as grim as ever traffic engulfed, dirty and a disgusting place to be in parts of LBI, still got beggars on the streets, almost as bad as Romford was in the 1960’s.
