We know all that needs to be known about The Mahabharata - 100k verses, longest epic in history, contains the core teachings of hinduism, not even the winners of the battle between good and evil all make it to heaven, and so on.
Yet, there are some issues with The Mahabharata which make it a particularly poor template around which to build a civilization. And I'm not just talking about the familiar arguments about sexual violence and objectification of women and the like.
In this video, I want to discuss how the Indian society you see outside your window stems from narrative and story choices made in The Mahabharata. I compare The Mahabharata to The Game of Thrones or the ethical restraint of The Batman against killing bad guys to explain why The Mahabharata needs to be reconsidered as a bedrock of Indian (Hindu) society.
In the order discussed in the video, here they are:
1. Divinity or near-divinity of all the central characters of The Mahabharata
2. Exploitation of the lower castes and classes to secure one's own position in society
3. Ends justify the means in the battlefield
4. Decoupling reward and action
