Lot of the reactions are saying: Turkey is still very cheap! Here in *country* it's way more expensive! THAT"S NOT THE POINT PEOPLE! I wrote this under another reaction. But I want to say this to not only that person. (I'm from the Netherlands, so English is not my native language. I do my best) Yes, for tourists Turkey is still very cheap. But for the locals it isn't. For example; You have your income and are willing to spend 500 US dollars in Turkey for a whole month. (I give USD for example, because it's the most common currencies). That's today 8557,90 TL. That's a lot. Someone from Turkey will never have that amount of TL in a month. The minimum income in turkey is only 1600 TL, not even 80 USD (A month! For everything). Average it is 7800 TL: 455 USD. For everything, also rent. For clarification, the average income in America is 2500 USD. So 5,5 times more. Other example; 1 cup of cappuccino Medium at Starbucks in Istanbul is now 26 TL. Where it was last year in June 16 TL. But last year; 1 TL was way less in USD than what's 1 TL now. So for "us", the tourists, it hasn't become more expensive. This year the TL means 1 USD is 17 TL and last year: 1 USD was 8 TL. So the cappuccino was last year maybe "only 16 TL". But that was 2 USD in that time. And today it's 26 TL = 1,52 USD. So for us the cappuccino has become 25% cheaper in only 1 year. But for the locals it has become 61% more expensive!! From 16 to 26TL. And their income hasn't increased, this means that it has now become unaffordable for them, while it has become cheaper for us. 1,52 USD on an average 2500 USD income; is 0,04%. But 26 TL on an average 1600 TL income is over 1,6% for only 1 cappuccino. (I'm not saying you earned this amount of money. But it involves 2 official comparisons of both average earnings, to make my point). Point of the video isn't about the tourists, but about the locals.
@OlgaProGoingPlaces
2 жыл бұрын
yes, you make good points and sometimes I do leave a comment, explaining that for locals prices are indeed very expensive. but I disagree that the video isn’t made for tourists. because they hear about high inflation in Turkey and worry if they can still afford to come here. the video is made to show them that if they earn in eur/usd, for them nothing much changed. Turkey is still a budget-friendly destination. I don’t think it’s my place as a foreigner to talk politics, but I do feel for Turkish people and hope it will get better for them.

the minimum wage isn't 1,600TL though. Right now it is 5,500TL (which is still only USD320)
@TolgaKarlilar
Жыл бұрын
Minimum wage is 5500 lira (which will be about 8 to 10k easily at the end of the year) and many people earn a lot more than that and then there is the massive shadow economy by which a lot of people have additional untaxed, unclaimed income. Also, if you have a profession and a decent career, you can make 5-10 times that easily and many corporate people in Istanbul do. The public servants get paid well too. Come on I mean, 80 dollars a month, Turkey is not Africa or some third world Asian country despite all the economic problems of recent years : ).

Problem is that incomes are not keeping up with the inflation. For example 1kg of ground beef costs the same here in Istanbul as my home country, but the minimum wage here in Turkey is about 250 USD per month versus the minimum wage in my home country is 1900USD per month. People are just not buying it so much, the meat shop in my neighborhood used to be busy but now days there is empty every time. Also at the street markets I see people buying so much less than I did in 2020 when I arrived here. In our household we are definitely buying far less than we would even just 1 year ago.

First of all, you look like a lovely couple. Second, I “discovered” your channel a couple of days ago, as I was doing some “research” ahead of catching a bus to Istanbul (tonight), and have to say I found lots of interesting info in your last 3-4 videos (the ones I watched). As for the prices in Istanbul, my only… “enigma” is Nike, Adidas, Puma, generally international brands that tend to have relatively “flat” prices at their outlets, no matter if you are in a country that’s doing well economically, or in one that is in… “trouble”. What I’m 95% interested in is football shirts (I collect them), and I was thrilled to see how much the ones of the three biggest Istanbul clubs cost nowadays (you can easily find the prices online). Still, I don’t know what to expect at… Olivium, for example, at Nike’s outlet, leaving Galatasaray’s shirts aside. I arrive in Istanbul at 7am tomorrow morning, and at 10 I will be at Olivium’s gate for their opening, hahaha... As for accommodation, this time I chose an airbnb place in Sisli, really nice and inexpensive. If I decide to spend a second week though in Istanbul, I think I’ll try Kadikoy. I’ve been almost 10 times to Istanbul but I’ve never stayed overnight in the Asian side. Should be interesting. Cheers from Greece

Example, sok market is one of few markets where you can get stuff for the cheapest prices, but they're expensive though ( compared to the minimum wage). Simple Starbucks Latte is about 50 liras these days and other coffee chains charge similar- 30,40 to 50. The cheapest bottle of beer costs 70-80 liras and more at the pubs.

Thanks for this video. I'm planning to spend a few nights in Turkey on my way to the Philippines. Something I want to know more about is how much the transportation is. I was told that it's less accessible and more expensive to go to downtown Istanbul from the new Istanbul airport and that I need to dedicate at least 2 hours to travel to and from the airport. Is that true? Also, how much should I budget for getting to and from the airport --- and for getting around the city (I'm thinking of visiting the less touristy area that you mentioned in the video) Again, thanks a lot for this!

Depending on traffic 1-1,5 hrs for the airport. Depending on the type of transportation 10-30 usd. Public transport will be very affordable, if you’re from Europe.

Hey Heidi, it costs 40 Lira, like 2 euro, with the official havas Busses from the new Airport to everywhere to Istanbul. Go downstairs to the Bus Terminal at the Airport. I took it yesterday

Good video! I lived in Istanbul for many years, and I thank you for explaining that life has become very expensive for Turkish people and foreigners who are paid in TL. I can definitely recommend Balkan lokantasi, although they closed down many of their restaurants because of the pandemic, and of course Şok supermarkets 🙂

every country fought their neighbors countless times throughout history. Ottomas fought Roman Empire too. Yet so many Europeans live in Turkey. Turkey is a beautiful country with sunshine and warm weather, people come here for that. Just because our ancestors couldn't stop fighting doesn't mean we can't live in peace.

Daym turkey is still pretty reasonable. 75 tl for the breakfast is pretty good that's like 900 pkr (I live I pakistan) in my country a place like that for a similar breakfast could easily charge 1500 and that price is pretty common. So yeah for the quality and ambiance I would say it's 100% worth it

Eating out in Pakistan is like 1/3 to 1/2 of eating out in Turkey overall. Maybe luxury stuff is not widely available and costs more. "Consumer Prices Including Rent in Istanbul at the moment are 93.79% higher than in Karachi"
