The premise was great, I remember coming up with a horror movie idea with my friends in the mid 2000s about some creepy person who no matter where you were, they always knew your whereabouts, and were always slowly coming for you. This scene was great and creepy, but I feel like the movie really dropped the ball in terms of not being scary and wasting an amazing premise. This was also like the only creepy scene in the movie. I guess you can only show someone slowly walking towards you so many times before it gets old, but this movie could have been a classic, and instead it's very forgettable and not very good.

Hands down best scene in the movie, and most terrifying. Timing can be everything, and the way this scene timed the teacher's reading the line "I am Lazarus, come from the dead, come back to tell you all" with the sudden rise in the music's volume, and the main character's realizing that "It" is the old woman outside. I love how the tension of the scene is built up here. At first it plops you right in the middle our protagonist's point of view as she endures a boring English lecture. A great job to place the audience in an every day mundane and recognizable situation. The camera pans slowly around the classroom mimicking her wandering eyes. She pauses when something inconspicuous, and strange catches her eye in the distance out the window. That moment of contemplation, then realization and finally panic washes over her as the figure inches ever closer. Her survival instinct kicks in and the scene transitions to a creepy relentless chase as she flees. The direction and music are in sync here. Masterful horror.

I think you're right. The scariest scenes in movies are always the ones that don't need blood or special effects - they create the horror in the viewer's mind. For this, however, you need a director who has mastered this trick, which is clearly the case here. It's basically just an old woman walking down the hall - but the scene (and the whole movie) is so perfectly shot that the old woman in your head becomes that unstoppable terrifying monster. Imagine some goofy CGI beast instead of the old woman - and the horror would have disappeared instantly.

An angry ex conjures a demon to kill everyone their ex girl/boyfriend sleeps with because they cheated on them? What matters is what's happening to the characters and how they're dealing with it. Explaining it would turn an already weird premise into something pretty stupid. It's great the way it is. Can't wait for the dvd release.

This is the BEST version of the thematic classroom discussion in a horror movie, ala Halloween, Hereditary, etc. It’s wallpaper on the scene, no blatant reference to fate or death, it coincides with what’s happening; the appearance of “The Eternal Footman,” it’s poetic in its use of “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” and it fits in line with the film’s evoking of “The Idiot” by Dostoyevsky to speak to the fleeting hours of life wasted away so frivolously until their value is finally seen in the face of death alongside the tragedy of a person and their lifetime of memories and experiences fading away in an instant.

So many things about this scene are perfect. The camerawork is phenomenal, especially the opening shot of the classroom as the camera spins around on its axis to look out the window before putting Jay in frame, then cutting to her perspective looking out the same window to see the old woman walking toward her. The sound design is fantastic too, the teacher reading the passage from the poem without any music, and then later the almost deafening music as the old woman shuffles toward Jay. Even the setting, the school hallway is relatively open, but it feels constraining and claustrophobic.

In a way, this is somewhat traditional. The movie tone and pacing is very similar to Halloween from 1978. This classroom scene is also a reference to Halloween, when Laurie Strode is in a classroom and sees Michael Myers stalking her. And like this creature, Michael Myers also is a silent figure and does not run, but rather just walks after his victims. And the cinematography of It Follows owes a lot to Halloween. Even the ambiguous time period of It Follows takes cues from 70s and 80s, when Halloween was made.

She got my older cousin when we're getting up the hills with our mountain bikes. Eventually me and my other cousin got away in time and we were riding to dunkin donuts to devise a plan. Meanwhile, I was still feeling tense like the old lady is still nearby despite making great distance from our bikes. I woke up afterwards. Absolutely terrified. The creepy part was she dressed and has the exact same hair.. I just couldn't make out her face, but I could feel she was freakishly smiling at me just by looking at her for a few seconds... Only difference was instead of walking she was running like a nazi zombie in COD WAW. I thought all these years it was just a bad dream, yet here I am 10 years later seeing this chilling clip.. Such an underrated movie. It kinda got ruined because the advertising declared, no outright promised "the scariest movie you've ever seen!" so most people went into the film as sort of a challenge and when it wasn't the scariest they've ever seen they declared the whole thing a letdown and a failure. I remember all the reviews and publish response that came flooding in once this got a wide release in 2015. Had it simply been released without the hyperbole proclamations I think people would have just vibed with the experience of the movie a lot more and enjoyed it instead of taking on an attitude of "pfft it wasn't THAT scary". Anyways I think It Follows isn't perfect but it's damn stylish, it IS unsettling and creepy and at parts frightening. I think it has some serious pacing issues in the second half and the very very end while well intended falls a bit limp (no pun intended). Still a very stylish, very old school (without being annoyingly wink wink nudge nudge about it) and at the end of a day a movie that gets under your skin. I consider It Follows a damn solid and if anything underrated little Horror gem that hopefully will or is considered something of a cult classic.

how'd the old lady get inside so fast if other monsters had to break into windows? Since they exist in the physical world wouldnt the class notice

This gave me hard chills, holy sh.t! Imagine just someone expressionless like that walking towards you with all patience of the world, invisible to everybody else, only to kill youwhen it reaches you. the anxiety and the suspense it causes is immense

Idk why but this scene is so creepy, even tho the old lady is very slow she still spooks me. Maybe it’s that face that has no emotion

It's her torment that scares me, just the thought of something inhuman following you to cause harm

This scene is so incredibly unsettling. I get the hate for this movie, because it's so slow and calculated, but I loved every second of it and sweat throughout.

imo this movie works just because its slow and calculated. It build up tension and paranoia. It doesnt rely on jumpscares or scary moments the whole movie. No it relies on suspense. Knowing that something is going to happen at some point but you never know where and when.
