I dreamt when I was a young man
That I would know fortune and fame
But it’s more than the cards that were dealt us
It’s knowing how to play the game
Now I wonder where I’ll be sleeping
Or if anyone hears what I say
Sometimes it just happens that way
In a way I have been lucky
I have everything that I need
I’ve never really been hungry
That might be the problem indeed
Wanting and having are brothers
Who fight for their rights every day
Sometimes It just happens that way
I think I’ve had a lover
For every doubt I can name
Going from on to another
Looking for someone to blame
How many more steps should be taken
When it’s clear that you’re going astray
Sometimes it just happens that way
Bad dreams used to wake me in panic
But most things we fear don’t come true
Tragedy feels so romantic
And draws me to people like you
The lessons that we can’t remember
Are the dragons that we have to slay
Sometimes It just happens that way
Everyone has a plan for
The life that they want to lead
But time has never been kind
To the planning of every great deed
There’s no convincing the prophet
To grant us a further delay
Sometimes it just happens that way
My friends they'll never know me
They’re too busy looking for clues
To explain their own disappointments
And every distraction they choose
They’re looking for old happy places
But nobody comes out to play
Sometimes it just happens that way.
I have learned to be grateful
For every song that I’ve sung
For any arms that might embrace me
For knowing that you were the one
Now one foot in front of the other
Until there’s nothing else I can say
But sometimes it just happens that way
(recorded live at Church of the Incarnation, San Francisco)
