I love that you treat your employees so well. I absolutely loved working in an LFS in my younger years but found out it wasn’t something I could support myself long term doing even managing the stores. I’ve always said if I could make a living wage doing it, it would be my dream job. Congrats to you on all your success and congrats to the lucky few that get to join you in it!

Right there with you! Managed a rather large fish department way back in the late 90’s through 2010 when I was in high school and college. Now I’m in my 40’s and make 6 times what I did as a manager at the pet store and I STILL miss those days. I just loved that job, it was a pleasure sharing my love for aquatic life with other enthusiasts! I would do it again in a heartbeat if the money was better. The demise of the “local fish store “ which my store was a victim of as well really makes me sad. The hobby is worse off for it!

I have a low-light planted 30cm rimless cube that houses about 60 blue shrimp and one fat pond snail. It’s been the easiest tank I’ve owned in the last ten years. I think that any low-light tank under 10 gallons could workout well for you. Any tank under 12” high really. A 20 gallon long might be a nice compromise between a tank with a nano-tank hight but with a larger footprint for more stocking and scaping options.

Dear Cory, I've always seen that, the larger a fish store, the more that the tanks & their inhabitants go uncared for, it's just so many hours of work for the upkeep; cuz even with auto water changes, you have the dead fish, icky glass, feeding & gravel vacs that need to be done. When your expansion is done, please don't be "that store". Sincerely, Sand

On the subject of opening new fish store, my good friend of mine opened one up RIGHT BEFORE the pandemic which obviously was worst case sensitive for not only fish On the subject of opening new fish store, ť good friend of mine opened one up RIGHT BEFORE the pandemic which obviously was worst case sensitive for not only fish store but any business. Unfortunately for me I have been in the construction field (license plumber for 6years, home remodel 5 years, asphalt/ concrete about 4-5 years) and needless to say during covid it got harder and harder to travel for work. Long story short on a very nerve racking decision I changed careers and partnered up with him. I've been selling aquatic plants for a while and got a decent clientele built up over the years in the greater Houston area. He was doing OK but together I'd like to say we are pretty successful. I've watched aquarium coop forever which has helped me in soo many different aspects of fish keeping to where I just down graded to only 28 tanks haha. Your advise has helped not only on my hobby but our fish store. We pride our selves not only to be one of the few lfs that actually medicate our fish before they get sold but more importantly we always try to keep atleast 1 oddball/rare fish in each tank at the store and there is no better feeling/hearing people say" omg I've never seen that before", or " I can't belive you have this fish I've been looking for this fish for years!!!" My fish I'm geeking on is our exodon aka "bucktooth tetra" pineapple pleco, and our TRUE altum angelfisj!!! anyways THANKS for everything you do for us and the hobby as a whole. Your a legend and an inspiration for all of us and I'm successfully living my dream and love doing what I love for a living so thanks for all the informative videos and helped give me the confidence to go against the grain and changed the way I keep fish for the better. (Sorry for the crazy long novel just felt has to say this) PEACE!!!!
