@ericburns9132 "I still think that Jimmy Stewart should have won the Oscar for this movie..." I think he gave the greatest performance ever by a lead actor, in what was then the third greatest picture ever made. The problem was, Life bombed at the box office, and the critics weren't all that crazy about it, either. But he got nominated real good. Freddie March won the Best Actor Oscar that year for The Best Years of Our Lives. March was brilliant, and Best Years was the box office king that year, was beloved by the critics, remains the greatest picture ever made, and had long coattails.

I believe Potter bought the bank not just because he's rich but also as part his evil scheme to get rid of the Bailey Building & Loan. Luckily George Bailey and his wife Mary intervened and saved the Building and Loan from bankruptcy.

And that's the problem. We all just assume things are supposed to cost more over time, but they're not. Free markets are deflationary. But the way the federal reserve and fiat systems are setup, they can only continue to exist by inflating prices and debasing currency. They have to bleed people of their wealth on every level. Your income, the things you buy with it, your home (if you can even afford to buy one anymore), when you sell your home, when you sell a stock, constantly taking and giving to those on government who did nothing to deserve it. The only time this doesn't apply is when you become wealthy somehow.

Not much at all assuming it’s not a random event. Although you could assume lending would grind to a halt well before then which would almost certainly crash an economy as well. This is by no means a defense of fractional reserve banking, however, it should be clear that an economy generally grows faster depending on the amount of money that can be lent(commensurate with its safety).

@JuukaRock
Жыл бұрын
To simplify it best I can, think of a bank as having two sides: one is to accept money deposits from customers, the other is to provide money loans to customers. The money from loans are taken from the deposits of customers. To incentivize people to save their money at the bank (so that the bank can loan it out), they usually give them perks like interest on savings, which are paid for by the interest the bank earns from the loans they give out. The more people save, the more the bank can loan. In the case of Bailey's, the loans are for houses for their customers ("The money is in Joe's house"). Banks therefore don't actually have much liquid cash on hand, usually only keeping a small percentage of money deposited at them for the occasional withdrawals, and the rest is out on loan. However, if people fear for the stability of that bank (that is, if the bank becomes insolvent, meaning it can't pay off its debts), the money deposited at them will be lost entirely. Potter starts a rumour that Bailey's is unstable, thus the customers of Bailey, fearing loss of all their saved money, try to withdraw it before it collapses. Ironically, the act of customers withdrawing all at once can be what causes the bank to collapse and become insolvent, because the money isn't on-hand, and the bank can't pay its debts before the collectors require it. This is called a bank run. Potter tries to make a double play, saying that he'll takeover all of Bailey's customer's accounts if he gets them at half-price (50 cents on the dollar). Essentially, an expensive short term cost for a long play to make Bailey have no more customers, meaning Bailey can't loan for buildings and eventually giving Potter a monopoly on housing. If Bailey was able to stay open on normal hours and lasts until the end of the day, then presumably on the next day it will get the income it needs off the interest of its loans to pay off its own debts before due dates are missed.

Too bad bankers aren't like that in the real world. There might not be such a feeling of someone else at the financial steering wheel. And people like me, might trust them at least enough to open an account with one. There was a saying by the bankers, back then, that my grandparents told me. It has made me more wary than a wild animal sniffing human tracks and the feeling remains to this day... "If you don't have it - you don't own it". My guess, is that it had such a negative connotation, that it was changed to "possession is 9/10ths of the law". Still rings the same, in my ears.

One thing I never understood about this bit of the movie. If they all sold their deposits to Potter for 50 cents on the dollar (or whatever), Potter still would not own the bank. He'd only own the deposits on loan to the bank, and ostensibly, if indeed all those deposits could be repaid in 60 days, as was represented to the people, then they'd be paid out to Potter in 60 days. But, the bank's ownership would not change. Yet, the main character talks about it as if Potter would then own the bank. I never quite followed that bit.

But owning all the bank's assets is effectively the same thing as owning the bank. It's like George says, the money isn't in the vault, it's invested in the community. That means when you deposit money at the bank, you're actually investing with the bank, and you now own a share of those investments. So if Mr. Potter buys all those shares, then what he owns are the investments. Think about it this way, if Mr. Potter withdrew every dollar from the bank, then the bank wouldn't have any money left, in which case it would cease to exist.
