Just out gett'n my steps in and thought Id check out my bamboo. I dug away some of the dead leaves and debris stuck in the tangle of the base of one CLUMP of one of my Old Hamii bamboos and saw LIFE!!! New shoots at the base of two separate culms. This pleases me greatly because the sooner they recover the sooner they can become the GIANTS that I bought them for.
As you can see in the video the new shoots are not very impressive in size and girth as last year. In the video I mentioned a thought that I had about thinking the larger CULMS were still alive closer to the ground. If this is the case then perhaps these shoots will just become branches for the living part of the larger CULMS. Which says to me that there will be no towering CULMS to come from these new sprouts. But its a start. Thats says to me that the heart of the clump underground is alive and trying to get things cranking again. I expect to see the larger new SHOOTS to be breaking ground in the very near future. Fingers crossed.
I haven't checked the other clumps I have through out the yard but the second largest one has shown no new shoots just yet. Just this very vibrant orange fungus at the base of one of the dead CULMS. The other CLUMP I have in the front yard was cut down by the lawn care guys along with the palm that were all brown from the freeze back in February. So lets see how that effects them and their recovery. I suspect that it will help them along quicker.
In other news we recently discovered a nesting pair of Carolina Wrens in an old gas BBQ grill that has flipped its last burger. It was all set to be put out on the curb when we noticed the pair of birds had moved in and set up house for the five tiny eggs. They hatched this past Saturday or perhaps Friday and the parents are busy, busy flying in worms and protein for the new hatchlings. I set up the remote battery powered WIFI @wyze brand outdoor camera in the BBQ while the parents were away. Unfortunately I didn't capture the hatchings and you can't really see much of the babies but Theres still lots of activity going on in there. With the NIGHTVISION you can see shadows of their little heads bobbing around if you zoom in while the adults are away.
With the motion sensor set I can see that one of the adults sits on the younglings from night till around 7am. Then the motion detection picks up all the activity of breakfast with the parents both flying in and out with tiny bits of protein for the kids. This seems to take place every hour to hour and a half until dusk. Then it seems one of the adults give the other a break before settling down for the night.
Its a pretty good set up they have there. Theres just a narrow slot perfect for them to slide in and out of with out giving larger predators a chance to get at the tiny morsels they're bringing up in there. The chicks should be flying the coop before it gets to warm I think. But it is metal and the sun can be pretty brutal.
I hope to capture the rest of their development before they fly the coop but the battery is already pretty low and could use a charge. Its pretty easy access to the camera by just opening the lid but I dont was to cause any undue stress on the nesting pair. I can check the camera to see when they're gone but replacing the @wyze CAM after its charged will be the tricky part. Now that they have babies and are more vested in caring for them the nesting pair might actually put up a fight to protect the quintette. I should do it soon though, they're going to grow up quick!
We'll see...
