This is an excellent video as a time capsule for all we've lost in the industry. These games may not have been ahead of their time, but they had a lot of heart and more passion than anything Ubisoft has put into any of their AAA games. While I haven't played the second one, your love and admiration shines through the quality of this video. You have a talent of showing, narrating, and providing your insight. Great video!

Ugh, thank you 😭 This is exceedingly kind. True story about Ubi games and heart. They used to boast some of the best, most daring video games around!! What a shame how they’ve declined. Funny how I would rather play Vegas, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, or Far Cry 2 than any of their output nowadays

Great retrospective! I'm a bit of one of the critics you mentioned at the start of the video after replaying Vegas 1 this year, but back when the game released I loved it. Vegas 2 solves most of my gripes with 1 and I'm very glad it happened (though the omission of the plastic curtain door on its version of Calypso is nigh unforgivable, denying Carwash its namesake). Multi-route linear games have become my favorite type of single player because there's variance for replay value and changes in play style while still having handcrafted, unique encounters, and Vegas is a prime example of this. I also miss the simpler era of multiplayer that both Vegas titles embody; I had endless hours of fun and made a lot of good friends in a way you just don't in console games anymore. However, especially compared to both GRAWs and contemporary Splinter Cell releases, both games just felt undercooked, and I wish they'd gotten more resources to make a more polished product. Replaying Vegas 1 on realistic was... disappointing at best. Usually playing a Clancy game on the hardest difficulty is the definitive way to do it and I had an absolute blast going back through GRAW and Future Soldier on hard, but with Vegas it actively showed the game's flaws instead, especially with the cover system (half the time I didn't use it because you'd be dead before you brought your weapon up). Really I'm just sad that they'll never get a chance to take what these games brought to the table and make an even more polished product because Siege and greed have destroyed Ubi forever. Guess I just need to move onto Ready or Not and leave Rainbow to my memories.

100% Sounds like we both have similar experiences with these games. And omg, I totally forgot about carwash. Core memory unlocked--thank you for that. I think I'm somewhat with you there that the Vegas games seem just, a little undercooked? Not as polished? I try to verbalize it in the video but I don't fully have the vocabulary to explain it. Current design standards and even a modest amount of Ubi money could resurrect Rainbow Six in an incredible way. But there just isn't the same value proposition for Ubi to make a stellar campaign that people buy once when they could make live service that people pay for over and over 🥲

R6 Vegas was the last decent R6, while Raven Shield was the last great R6. I would have preferred Vegas 3 or Patriots over Siege. PvP-only Esports-focused games just aren't for me. I prefer games with an actual offline singleplayer that'll last forever, unlike today's always-online crap that has an expiration date before it becomes a paperweight. Anyone remember The Crew?

@@brentsacks I also think its extremely insulting how the only way to get something close to a singleplayer Rainbow Six experience these days is to play the crossover missions w/ Rainbow Team in Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Breakpoint. They even tried to adapt some of Siege's gameplay with the crossover missions in Wildlands, such as having enemies barricading the building during the Caveria mission! Ubisoft could clearly make a singleplayer Rainbow Six experience, they just don't want to and they shove it into crossovers w/ Ghost Recon instead. The R6 missions in Wildlands really make me wish Rainbow Six would get a good singleplayer campaign again in an actual Rainbow Six game.

Wow, I didn’t know they put crossover missions in those games. I can see why that comes across as a slap in the face to longtime Rainbow fans. What the heck Ubi 😤

Great Video, and I have to agree with you. Been a fan since the original game and R6 Siege is so far removed from what it was. Do need to correct one thing. The operatives in Rainbow Six aren't from NATO countries but from Special Forces from around the world and operate Worldwide. The original had a Russian operative. This is why they are in Mexico and there are Operatives from Japan and South Korea.

Okay I just went on Wikipedia because I had to know: it does say NATO countries and I don’t see any Russians on the team, but maybe they expanded it later on?

@@brentsacksThe Spetsnaz have been in the game since day one. They've only added one new Russian op since and that's Finka. It was originally just NATO countries at first. FBI SWAT, GIGN, SAS, GSG9 and SPETSNAZ as the only exception at this point. Then came the JTF2 and the SEALS. Finally we get to the Japanese unit and that's when they wanted to make it about special forces worldwide which is a good idea but they haven't done much with the story and that's my biggest problem. What little we have is pretty meh

Siege is a good game imo, but it’s a bad rainbow six game. I’d like to see a new entry into the Rainbow six series, or a remake of one of the originals or the vegas games. After 9 years, surely siege is reaching its end point. We need something fresh for the series.
