This video shows that it's been a while since we've seen Fallow deer in this area.
As it turns from daylight to dusk, we’ve had a little drive round this summer evening.
To be honest we’ve been out looking for Little Owls, but they seems to have disappeared for now; so we went to one of our old favourite fields to see what might be there.
About 100 metres away, we can just make out the shape of couple of large Fallow deer. There are only two of them that we can see. In the wild they typically live in small herds, so there may be others that we can’t see if they are hiding in the woodland which is classed as a wildlife corridor.
The first one is a lovely ginger brown colour with the usual white spots and some impressive antlers.
The antlers are still covered in velvet.
It is good to see it feeding happily in the long grass.
The second one is a much darker brown and has no spots. It also has the impressive antlers which are also in velvet.
Even at a distance, you can tell this is a Fallow deer, rather than a red deer because Fallow antlers have an obvious palm share, whereas those of the Red deer look like tree branches.
Fallow deer have a natural colour variation; so it is common to see different coloured animals in the same herd.
Fallow deer are pretty common across England, Wales, Ireland and Southern Scotland. However, they are not one of the UKs native deer species; as they were only introduced here in the 1th Century by the Normans who wanted them in deer parks and in hunting forests.
