I think one of the most underappreciated quotes from this entire show is when Aang assumes Katara forgave Yon Rha because she chose not to kill him, and she responds "But I didn't forgive him. I'll never forgive him." This is surprising considering children’s shows usually try to solve every problem by wrapping things up in a neat little bow. A lot of people are convinced that the only way to move past trauma is to forgive the person who harmed you, but that is a terrible mindset if you ask me. It places an immense burden on the victim. Forgiveness is earned, not owed, and not everyone deserves it. You can hate someone without letting it completely consume you.

I wouldn't say it is a terrible mindset, forgiveness can heal someone in ways that you can't imagine, you have to go through some real shit to understand that. But this is not for everyone, and the ones who can't do it are not in the wrong.

While I won’t say forgiveness is harmful, you are indeed right. You make a lot of sense. After all, If you think about it another way, can one truly call it “forgiveness” if they had been peer pressured to do it, instead of truly letting time and the “potential change” in the wrong-doer change their mind? In other words, I won’t say “forgiveness” is necessarily harmful, but rather there is this expectation that it should be applied immediately. Especially when said pressure comes from extremely naive people who have in no way, experienced or gone through what the victim has gone through, as though forgiveness was just as easy as reciting your ABCs. It’s a real and extremely challenging grey area when it comes to the concept of ‘killing’ and ‘revenge’. If I heard or saw that the wrong doer has changed his ways and a lot of time has passed, then I can understand thinking of forgiveness. However, you are definitely right. No one should be pressured to forgive on the spot.

@kaydollar2490
3 жыл бұрын
@@desiabalto1 Of course it was, but because of the circumstances it was shallow and relatively true. Not in the sense that Sokka didn’t love their mom as much, but in the sense that Katara knows that woman DIED because of... well, her existence (Katara’s). Her way of loving her mother also includes a really heavy carrying of guilt. Sokka has the “luck” (if you want to call it that way) to not have this, he loves his mother a lot without going through negative feelings about HIMSELF while doing it. So yeah, he doesn’t love his mom the way Katara does, his love was a little healthier. After Katara gets her closure, she can finally love her mother without feeling conflicted about it. One of the principal things that made her mom’s death such a “big deal” (as some people call it) for her, it’s the fact she, in a big part, BLAMED herself for it. That angered her and saddened her more, she was just... angry, and resentful. Anyway, it’s just an explanation, at the end of the day I agree that it was rude, but really understandable, we all say stupid stuff when we’re angry so we can only imagine how bad she was feeling to say that to the brother she has been taking care of almost her entire life; she didn’t MEAN to invalidate Sokka’s love for their mom, she just wanted to, in a way, try to make them understand that she NEEDED to go on that trip. Also don’t think this is like an angry comment or something like that, I’m just trying to clarify this! :)

I don't think there's any point to dramatize Bloodbending as an inherently evil thing to do and I definitely wouldn't compare it to rape, that's ridiculous, rape is much worse. Using that logic, I can say that firebending at someone is equivalent to burn torture or murder. But bending fire at someone in this universe isn't equivalent to trying to kill them, but could be for good or bad reasons. Like training, self defense, giving light, or giving warmth. Don't dramatize Bloodbending because we see how it was being used by people with harmful intentions. It could easily be used for good actions, mainly medical and self defense wise and it was really dense and closed minded of Katara to have it illegalised and have it seen as a purely evil action.

The shippers still like Zutara but I think this episode showcases why it probably wouldn't work between them. I think while she forgave him, he'll always be a bit of a symbol of that. It's also sad how Katara met the probable reason why Kya was killed. Hama's escape could definitely be a factor as to why the Fire Nation stopped taking water bending prisoners.

In fact it seems he didn't know her name before this episode. He never called any member of Team Avatar by their names before his redemption, and it seems he was not willing to ask; when meeting the Gaang in 'The Western Air Temple', he dances around using names, saying 'I can uh- teaching firebending uh- to you'; the first time he says Aang's name is in 'The Waterbending Masters', when prior to that it was always just 'the Avatar'; in this episode, when he goes into Sokka's tent, he says he wants to talk about '[Sokka's] sister', then Sokka says Katara's name and Zuko looks illuminated (like it's his first time hearing her name), and then Zuko repeats it as if seeking confirmation. I would bet that, up to this episode, he thinks of her as 'the Avatar's Water Tribe girlfriend who's actually quite powerful and wants to kill me'.

One of the things I learned from comment sections of other reactors that I always thought waa super fucking cool, is that the existence of bloodbending is directly responsible for the death of Katara's mother. Until the prison break, waterbenders were kept in captivity, where they were thought to be unable to harm the fire nation. Hama's escape proved to the fire nation that there is truly no prison in the world that could keep a waterbender inside, meaning that every waterbender is a massive threat. This means Yon Rha never had an option to capture Katara's mother. It was ultimately not in his hands. Obviously also Katara's mother's sacrifice is also immense and shows the kind of family she grew up in and the love that her mother had for her and of course Katara now realising *just* how much love her mother had for her, is a very stark contrast to Azula and her relationship with her mom.

People always give Katara shit for being mean to Sokka, saying, "You didn't love her like I did" and comparing her loss to Sokkas, and Aang losing his people, implying that she overreacted. But the way I see it, Katara's whole character is centered around her taking care of people, being motherly, and protecting her friends. In the Painted Lady, she says that she will never turn her back on people that need her. She literally turned her back on her mother, who died in order to protect her. Exactly the opposite of how Katara sees the people she loves. She can't reconcile that shortcoming with her nature as a protector, and she almost certainly blames herself and her lack of strength for her moms death. Her mom is the one person she couldn't protect. This whole episode is her unraveling, dipping into that darkside in order to obtain some kind of redemption. Maybe even Honor. Bloodbending gives her strength, and that underlines the conflict she felt with Hama: Great power, but at the cost of something as evil as taking away a persons bodily autonomy. Making a person as helpless as she felt when she last spoke to her mom. She is squaring a circle that can't be squared. Also, a great contrast to Aang. Remember when he accused Toph of letting sandbenders steal Appa, and he lost control and went into the avatar state? And Katara calmed him down? Its the mirror of this episode. And its damn impressive that in a kids friends, the characters can sense what Katara is going through, and understand that she is just lashing out from frustration. Goddamnit I love this episode. Also, "It's not just hard, it's impossible" is an underrated, Azula level badass one liner

Also some things to add.. -Katara overheard sokka and tophs convo on their mother. How sokka doesnt remember her face. I suppose katara felt alone on the subject that sokka didnt agree with her. And in the heat of the moment that convo makes sense why she would say or think he forgot/didnt love her as much. -Also with hama, katara said she reminded her of gran gran. She invested that deep family bond with her only for it to end up being very traumatic.
@xanadu6784

@@missdifficulty905 oh shit. Yeah, both of those things totally scan. I didn't even think about how Katara knows that Sokka doesn't remember his mom's face. That totally adds a whole new level to that conversation. Wow. Another thing I just remembered: the Fire nation used to take water tribe prisoners, and now they arn't any more, despite them still taking earth kingdom prisoners. I wonder if some water tribe prisoner, at some point, showed them that a waterbender was a threat even without any...external...water. In which case, the blood bending that Katara learned was just the part of a cycle of violence and retribution that cost her mother her life. And in a way, by spareing Yon Ra, she broke that cycle.

@@xanadu6784 Yeah it was very conflicting, seeing hama using it immorally and aang pushing his beliefs. It was a comment by aege wondering if katara chose what she really wanted or not. Plus toph was pretty much imprisoned to learn metalbending. Its either they lose hope and die(like the ones in imprisoned) or hold on to survival to achieve these greater strengths. Its a sad but real concept.
@Paerata12

This episode has some truly creative and awesome lines! Especially from Azula and Yon Ra. “I’m about to celebrate becoming an only child!” “I’m afraid we’re not taking prisoners today.” The implications of each statement are much more chilling and ominous than just saying “I’m going to kill you!” And then this - “It’s easy to do nothing, but it’s hard to forgive.” I love this line because sometimes people forget that finding the strength to let go of anger and forgive someone can actually be an extremely difficult process to undergo. It’s not something that can be done on a whim. Which is all the more reason why it’s understandable that Katara was still unable to forgive Yon Ra, even though she spared him.

I think the concept of a "filler" episode is often applied too broadly. From a pure plot perspective, such episodes as Zuko Alone, The Swamp, The Beach, and The Headband are "filler", but they are essential for character development and a better understanding of what the war has done to the world. I don't think of them as filler in the same way that The Great Divide and Avatar Day are.
@artistfloor9
3 жыл бұрын
People use "filler" as a catch-all term for any episode they don't like. I wouldn't even consider The Great Divide or Avatar Day to be "filler" because I don't think either of them were added just for the sake of padding out the season or because the writers ran out of ideas. I think The Great Divide had a purpose, which was to demonstrate Aang's role as a mediator, but it wasn't executed well. And I actually like Avatar Day.

It makes sense for this to be the time for Katara to deal with this stuff because of her being separated from her dad, again. When she got separated for the first time at the beginning of the season she hadn't seen her dad in years so she was happy at first but after having him around for long enough she realised: hey, you actually did leave your kids alone to go fight a war, right after losing their mother. But now having to split from her dad for a third time, because of Azula, she directs her anger towards Zuko, Azulas brother and the man who killed her mom.

This is my favorite episode and I never get tired of seeing people react to it. Katara is a character that has so much untapped anger and trauma. She has always been able to help everyone else with their own journeys and be their person, but she never had an outlet for her own grief. This episode also touches on forgiveness in a way that no other children's show has been able to before, showing that forgiveness isn't a requirement for healing.

As side -questy as these episodes are, they are so incredibly important for cementing Zuko as a member of the GAang and for giving the characters their moments to complete their individual arcs instead of squeezing it all into the finale.
