I believe Ian Sefchick (Magic Death Eye) originally built the 4 x Capitol Mastering Compressors, which have just been modelled and become a plugin by UAD, before starting his Magic Death Eye company. He has a great story about selling Al Schmitt a custom preamp that I read somewhere if you can find it. When Al's stuff came up for sale after he passed, that exact preamp sold for a huge amount of money

About Laura : DDMF made a mono unit emulation first. Over the revisions, and after a lot of bla-bla on gearspace, they started hiding easter eggs inside the plugin, and incorporated a secret mode : if you click on the logo, the vu-meter background change to a pin-up, and the compressor becomes punchier. Guys on gearspace decided to call her "Laura", and this became a geeky joke between some guys on a forum and DDMF. On the stereo version, they incorporated the Laura mode as an easter-egg too. That's why this is so hidden, as well as many functions in the plugin. Not the most convenient, but that's a funny way to keep your clients' interest.

More about it : the EQ is built into the compressor, not before, not after. I don't know what it means, but if you look at plugin doctor you only see very narrow boosts on selected frequencies.. and that's not what I hear. I don't know what sorcery is in it.. and kinda love the mystery about this tool And about the sound, it brings depth, weight, movement, openness.. As I was saying on one of your videos, we maybe need 500 emulations to get one sounding good.
@Bthelick

The way I like to think of masking is that each ear to brain signal is kind of 'mono-phonic' in a given range. So for example if you pick any given single frequency, we can only hear one thing at that frequency, the loudest thing, for any given moment in time. The masking that happens behind that is absolute only one thing can exist there. Masking to neighbouring frequencies also occurs if the difference in level is big enough (like how an ear ring after an explosion will mute all other frequencies)

Damn. You’re blowing up my favorite ITB bus compressor for years! (Outside a Nebula comp by Tim P…). I have the “mono” version of MDE, which basically just can’t do unlinked/dual mono. It’s WONDERFUL. This video makes me want this one too, but rest assured the “mono” version sounds just as good. Very easy to set up with a wide sweet spot, just not as feature rich.

the mono version also doesn’t have an EQ built it so it’s not possible for it to sound just as good. still a great plugin but this one is even better.

@@shayeasy it has a low cut sidechain which is pretty much the only EQ related thing I muck with on bus compressors. I have dedicated tools for EQ moves. When I insert a compressor on an entire bus I want to be solely focused on what it’s doing to the dynamics when I start tweaking knobs. To each their own, but I’d likely seldom use the EQ futures. Dual Mono can be really helpful when it comes to dynamics and stereo image in certain situations, but that’s highly situational. 90% of the time linked channels isn’t an issue for me. I demoed the Stereo version… there’s a difference in box tone. It’s worth having both but for what I do I actually preferred the sound of the “mono” version

I've been using DDMF's MagicDeathEye Stereo on my master busses for a long time now and did not know about the INPUT/OUTPUT link until now. Literaly I did not know about that feature. I've discovered the oversampling feature by mistake a couple of years ago. All in all I find it to be a great plugin that adds a very nice color to the overall tone. I believe it distorts a bit too fast and sometimes it's hard to dial in compression settings on bass heavy music. The EQ and filters are an excellent feature and they sound lovely! I'm glad you got the chance to review it, more people need to know about this!

If you get rid of a plug-in without reading the manual, you deserve what you do not get. That said, hiding features to preserve the "look" of an interface is deeply wrongheaded. It's like not indicating precise setting levels because analogue gear doesn't do so. One of the prime benefits of computers is precision and repeatability. Don't tell me to "use your ears". I know when to do that and I know when fiddling around on an interface in a computer is a pointless waste of time. So yes, a couple of extra knobs are in order here.

There’s a studio in my city that actually has one of these, I believe just the mono version (part of me feels like you can buy a stereo magic death eye but I could also just be dumb and didn’t look at the website before making this comment) but they have an actual hardware Magic Death Eye. When I went to tour the place they wasted no time telling me about it and as much as I wanted to hear it they were booked solid and got me in while they were setting up for what looked to be a gigantic session. I’m hoping to book a session there soon just because I want to run SOMETHING through the MDE but we’ll see whenever that comes

If the equivalent of plugin doctor existed for hardware 50-70 years ago - half the world's classic consoles and outboard units probably wouldn't exist in the form we know them because they would be flawed from a measurement point of view and development would be abandoned or seriously redirected - but they sound fantastic to the human ear. Even oscilloscopes were rare in a lot of small labs in the 50s, 60s and 70s. A lot of development was done by trial, error + ear.

I wonder about hi freqs beyond human hearing - presumably the reproduction device will try to produce them anyway, which might degrade it's performance on the wanted freqs? Same with ultra low bass, so I use low pass at 18 Hz and high pass at 30 or 70 kHz - and 32 X Oversampling on the FF ProL2 (Have to bounce offline for that)
@jahudka
Жыл бұрын
It might not necessarily be about the reproduction device trying to reproduce frequencies outside the hearing range, but more about the response of the filters. A high-pass filter with a certain slope and a certain cutoff frequency means that the attenuation at the cutoff frequency is some specific amount, but the filter will affect sound *above* the frequency as well, until it reaches a point where its response is actually flat - meaning e.g. a 12dB high-pass at 100hz will have *some* attenuation even *above* 100hz (maybe as high as 150? depends on the implementation). And the filter will also affect phase - also even above its nominal cutoff frequency. There are filters which saturate, and saturation generates harmonics, which can extend far beyond the actual filter's operating area in the spectrum. So e.g. a high-pass filter on the kick drum at 30hz might seem like it won't do much unless you have a really beefy subwoofer - but it actually might have a pretty profound effect.

I love the "Window with a View" track you use for the 1st demo-thanks for bringing Sleepaway Camp to my attention. A Sweetwater sales engineer who is a guitarist raved about Magic Death Eye as a comp for guitar tracks in the (printed) Sweetwater newsletter sometime in the last year. I kept my eye out for a sale, and picked it up when DDMF discounted it. It's one of those rare compressors that compresses without sounding like it's compressing. It's sort of like a "nicer" knob. I wish I understood what it does and why it sounds so good. Gotta say, though, I really dislike the quirky aspects of the UI; they just seem like quirk for the sake of quirk, and I find them kind of annoying. The sound makes up for it, though. 8-) -Tom

I think you may have chosen the wrong version as the main MDE is the silver one. This version is different in some stereo way - same sound/feel tho from what I can hear. Agreed tho that those hidden functions are completely fudging insane usability. The "silver" MDE sounds amazeful the moment you switch it in. The ballistic feel is unique. At least until I reviewed the (distressingly over-priced) UAD Capitol Mastering lure to subscribing which is slightly similar. The MDE I passed on for price and usability. The UAD I completely couldn't see the sense when in A-B in my (still unpublished) review the results were 99.9999999% exactly the same compared to (mostly) stock Reason devices. I could still buy the MDE and have $300 left to buy (most of) Bitwig (or any other DAW that amused me for a laff).

@@BenedictRoffMarsh You're mistaken. The silver plugin can process stereo tracks, but the THRESHOLD is what's mono. Meaning, it processes the left and right channel as one. With the black one, it's dual mono, meaning it can compress the L and R as separate channels (as if you've got 2 mono hardware units working on the L and R separately), so there can be slight variances in the L and R. The black can also process as mono (instead of dual-mono) in the same way the silver one can too if so chosen, cos it has both options (it's the "thresh link" switch). In general, mono processing is said to have more "glue" and "punch" in the groove, while dual-mono is said to have a more "wide" and "open" feel. That's why it's nice to have both options with the black one. So basically, the silver one is just a more limited version of the black one, cos it can't do "dual mono"
