This is what Kevin, who is blind and a long white can user thought of the new Cyclops Junction at Chorlton in Manchester, which is part of Andy Burnhams Bee walking & cycling network ‘It’s just totally confusing’. The layout is too complex and no more should be built please.
Went to Manchester to go with Kevin to look at the so called Cyclops scheme at Chorlton. Kevin is totally blind and is a long white cane user. This design puts a roundabout cycle lane for cyclists / e-bikes etc around the outside of the green man pedestrian crossings at the junction. Green man crossings have safety and accessibility features for blind people to cross the road junction. However to get to them, pedestrians have to cross the roundabout cycle lane first. This lane only has zebra crossings which have no safety or accessibility features for blind people to use to cross from the pavement across the cycle track to get to the green man pedestrian crossings. This design has also increased the number of tactile paving setts from 10 to 22 at this junction, making it very confusing and disorientating for blind and visually impaired pedestrians to use independently.
These junctions are not based on universal design and are inherently discriminatory. There role out in the UK a should be halted.
