Considering I get darker in the summer and paler than my own regular complexion in the winter (I’m about your tone in the winter) I NEED THREE DIFFERENT SHADES... 🥴 the struggle here for me... the struggle... I have pink (cool) undertone with a very light coffee (warm-ish neutral) overtone. I’m so glad you named all the undertone colors... years back I got into an argument with someone who refused to believe there was such thing as green undertones 😫

Art background here as well, i see level gradients in the shadows you're talking about but it didnt occur to me beforehand to apply it to makeup. When i paint i used to just wing it go either a level down or up by adding black or white with my pre-mixed flesh tone that i decided on *then* i would harmonise the colours around it, but it makes sense that you would need to figure out your contour shades after you figure out your foundation colour because you damn well need to know if your simulated shadows are ashy or not. You're a genius at figuring this out, lol. Have you done something on lighting for good makeup application yet? I dont really have a reliable natural light source right now so i'm thinking of getting an adjustable temperature ring light. Perhaps you could give us some tips on setting up the right environment for practicing application at home. Actually i haven't gotten through all of your stuff so i should dig around a little bit more after this. 😆🥰

Of course natural sunlight is useful because it will highlight any mistakes you’re making so you can then fix them, but I try to do my makeup in lighting similar to the lighting at my destination. Like the gross overhead lighting at work vs a low lit restaurant or bar vs bright sunlight at a game. Also if you know you’re gonna be taking pics with flash it can be useful to sit close to a bright lamp to do makeup

I really have trouble seeing undertones in general unless they’re pretty obvious, like I have no idea what my tone is. But when you held that palette up next to your face suddenly I could SEEEEE how green your skin is. It was almost to the point where I wondered if the white balance on your camera had shifted on its own. I think it’s the opposite side of the color wheel that made it more noticeable to me and now I’m wanting to grab some muted oranges and greens and purples to see if more blue or pink or green jumps out to me in my own skin tone. I also get what you mean about undertones and overtones - I think. I don’t know what my skin’s undertone is exactly, but my face has a lot of redness in the skin “overtone” I guess you would call it, that has made it really hard for me to find a shade match that makes me look connected to my neck. I’m thinking I need to pick up color correctors and just play around and see if I can figure out what additions will make my foundations a better match.

You can see slight color variations with such clarity and you describe them so perfectly that I feel like now I can pinpoint what is or isn’t working and why. I have to mix almost all of my colors, so understanding what I’m looking for and how to achieve it is soooo valuable. (And I like what you said about tones. I have very yellow undertones with very pink overtones and nearly purple hyperpigmentation. Hard.) Thank you!!!

I think that you are absolutely correct about the undertones and overtones. Talking about your undertones is super common and an essential part of makeup in kbeauty and asian beauty in general but I feel like western beauty gurus tend to have a one color fits all perspective. In kbeauty, there are even places that you can get a personal color consult at an expensive or cheap price to figure out what colors look good on your undertones in terms of both makeup and clothing. Many of the makeup products that come out also have a warm tone versus cool tone version. I’m glad that a western beauty creator like you is talking about it!

This video is old now but I just had to say YES about the undertones overtones things- I have noticed the same thing but haven’t heard anyone else say it before. I think it’s easy to recognize on people who are super ruddy- they have very obvious red overtones, and when they wear clothes that match their red overtone the look like a lobster. But usually they have a blue undertone, so when they wear the right shade of blue it totally calms the redness of their complexion. I’m the same exact color as you Alex- everything that matches you matches me. Same hair and eye color too. My undertone is very green, with more yellow than blue in it. So I describe myself as a warm olive undertone. And yes, it’s extremely difficult to find foundation and contour shades but I love that you do the work for me lol. Thanks so much!

As a painter, it totally makes sense! Human skin is very layered. Personally, i'm mixed and have the same issue you do in that my undertones are like, olive/greenish but my overtones are much more neutral, even going into cool. In my case, being anemic af doesn't help LOL. What I do it use a fairly neutral contour for my undertones and use a warmer one over the top (sometimes even a bronzy blush) and that seems to work.
