In the first episode of our new series, The Journey Pt 1: It’s Not About the Destination, Walking the Text founder Brad Gray unpacks what Abraham knew about God that we don’t. Abraham is frequently referred to in the Scriptures as a model of faithfulness because when God told him, “Go.” He went. Actually, the Hebrew for walk or go is halakh, and that’s exactly what Abraham did. No questions. No “yeah buts.” He just starts moving, and he walks 1,100 miles at the speed of sheep and goats into the unknown because he knew God is the God of the journey, not the destination.
And it’s because Abraham knew this about God that he had the confidence that he’d get what he needed to get when he needed to get it. But we’re not all wired like Abraham, are we? Most of us prefer clarity. We like itineraries. We don’t just want to know where we’re going. We want to know where we’re going to stop and eat along the way. But that’s not how God usually operates.
Whether it’s God telling Moses to go (there’s that word halakh again) back to Egypt or Jesus modeling how to live a life of dependence on God’s Spirit, we see what it looks like to journey well with God. It’s this capacity to keep moving when we don’t know what’s ahead, trusting that the God who said “Go,” will show us what we need at just the right moment. In this brand-new teaching series “The Journey,” we’ll learn how to adopt a journey mindset, what it looks like to journey well with God, and how to spot and transform the things holding us back.
