I personally haven't seen ANYONE talk about the phenomenon you discussed in that last youtuber video. Which is wild because I've thought the same thing for years. Seeing someone call it out was refreshing (and validating). I actually watched a couple of your art videos after and enjoyed them, too! But I'm not an artist so I may not be the "right?" viewer for some of those videos like you mentioned. For what it's worth, I think you are a born video essayist. The reason I loved your last video is because it came across as effortless and totally authentic. You have a lovely honest, open way about you that I think translates very well to discussions about thought-provoking topics. Also you made excellent points. You managed to articulate something I've been suspecting and struggling to put into words for quite a while now. I found myself thinking, "Damn, I hope this guy makes more video essays. I feel like there is no real space for artists on the internet anymore. Sites dedicated to art like deviantart betray their users, and sites that artists use that appeal to wider audiences do not prioritise art, like IG and twitter. On youtube, commentary/essay videos are pushed more heavily than art videos. D'Angelo Wallace started out in art youtube but ended up in commentary youtube, so it seems like a pipeline that youtube pushes upon artists if they want to build an audience. It's a real shame, because community is so important for artists, but the community on the internet feels so spread out. I appreciate your work, and hope you can find a balance where you create content you love and share your art with your audience, but also get traction from the mysterious algorithm.

My thought on your comparison between yt and ig posting. It might be more beneficial to post your ig reels as shorts. It could potentially get the same kind of attention towards your art without any extra work. My only fear is that maybe you'll end up with some kind of disconnect between videos and shorts, but I'm not aware of how those two groups influence each other. But It's also possible YT just either isn't the place or not the place you want to advertise like you said. I have been greatly enjoying your perspectives on art so I hope these videos continue to be an extension of your art.

it seems unfortunately youtube (and a lot of social media) feeds off of drama, and videos talking about a juicy topic attract people and are pushed by the algorithm T^T art videos are wonderful, but they're only enjoyed by a certain audience. It's hard to keep up that kinda niche without pushing more clickbaity topics, like 'is art school worth it' etc etc. Just feels like running in a hamster wheel and slowly resenting the content you actually want to make as it doesn't perform well, it's a messy old state that social media is in rn. KZitem pushed your previous video essay to me and I enjoyed it, then it lead me to enjoying your art videos, so small victories I guess!

you're talking about your struggles. they are my struggles too. im starting to think the only ethical way to have a youtube channel is to try to grow through your own struggles and help people through theirs. and if that struggle is youtube itself, we need to talk about it. because even if they aren't "technically" pyramid schemes like some have pointed out, the feeling of ickiness is still there and thats what matters.

i found your channel through your previous video, which i liked a lot, bc it was a topic absolutely worth discussing. then i checked out your art videos & i found them sooo soothing to watch and listen to, especially as i do my own art (i do digital paintings & pixel art) or i journal - it’s like a ‘study session’ or a way to motivate oneself to make art. i think sometimes we really underestimate how powerful just WATCHING someone making art can be. i love to watch painting/draw with me videos, even without any voice over, because i can learn something new even by just watching someone else’s process. in case you think your videos are ‘too egotistical’ or ‘unhelpful’ - they definitely can be helpful and are so! i’m a creative person also deciding what to focus my channel on & struggling with topics, though i’m slowly making progress with this. i had a very similar mental block where i thought i ‘wasn’t good enough’ to make content/share my experience or that ’nobody would care.’ i even thought my vlogs would be boring too haha! but i found i was really just overthinking the heck out of it. what i had to do was find the intersection between what i have fun making and what people have fun watching. and if you watch youtube a lot, then instinctively you know what’s fun to watch. so that’s good news, you already have half the knowledge required in that equation! so there was no reason, for me, to overthink the other half. what you have fun making & what people have fun watching don’t have to be on different planets, because what unites them, really, is effort! mainly the effort to make the videos you have in mind and making them as well as you can with your current equipment. people recognise that and will want to watch. also re: overthinking content, there comes a point where i literally just said to myself, ‘this is youtube. people love it because EVERYONE gets to share something.’ you don’t have to have a phd in art to talk about art! it’s not a formal job or a uni application, you don’t need the ‘official’ qualifications. being passionate about something is, truly, enough. you have something that only you can share & that’s really valuable! sorry for the really long comment, but hope this helps anyone out there! i subscribed to you - good luck on your journey! ✨
@morguedesign

thank you! that intersection is so important, but it's probably bigger than most people think because anyone who watches a lot of videos has that instinct about what's fun to watch! I really appreciate your insight

@@morguedesign you’re very welcome! ❤ another thing i was trying to convey is that there are videos for everything on youtube - makeup, DIY, art, drama, video essays, fountain pen reviews, people even enjoy looking at other people’s journals & sketchbooks! there will absolutely be people who will appreciate your videos, no matter what you make. no topic is ‘too silly’! so really the best thing to do is to make something you’d want to watch & see how it goes. and you can change your videos at any point, too! :) as long as you are giving something valuable to the viewer, then imo the video is good! (and ‘something valuable’ can be anything - information, a tutorial, entertainment, or even just good vibes!) i find that pressure & perfectionism are the enemies of creation. wanting to do things right is great, except when it starts to hinder or altogether stop the creative process. i see creation as making up half of the ‘figuring out’ process (if you don’t create, how do you know what you like making?), and that helped immensely in taking taking the pressure off. i’m sure you’re going to be great at whatever you choose to do! looking forward to seeing what you make ✨

You're clearly very insightful, have refreshingly normal/ethical takes, and as a bonus your voice is lovely and you speak very well, and your art process is nice to watch without its own commentary (I think people like a sense of mystique around art processes sometimes) so idk I just know I'd tune in haha hehe ❤❤❤

I think there's a relationship connection that needs to be made between the art that's being made and the audience that NEEDS to see that artwork in order to be successful on KZitem. I grew up reading comic books, and graphic novels are just a matured audience step beyond that. Art is a visual language for communication that taps into a different part of the brain to aid in an overall understanding of what is being communicated. My channel succeeded without resorting to making any off-topic videos to pull in the audience. But making art for art's sake and hoping somebody else would want to see it wasn't really what I was trying to do. I was trying to make visual communication aids for a novel because I needed them and nobody else was making them, and a lot of my audience needs to see those pictures, too. The channel succeeded, not because I'm skilled as an artist, far from it, but because my audience is so hungry for it.

really cool, i also commented something similarly to this topic in your last video. it's just so hard to find the correct target audience. honestly, i'm also facing this problem with my art account: i had thousands of followers and 10k+ likes in general on IG when i drew fanart, but my stats significantly dropped after i diverted away from the fanart (from thousands to hundreds). social media really is a "you" platform rather than a personal thing we use to show what we have; we somehow have to find the perfect balance to gap the bridge here for proper reciprocation from the audience on socmed. looking forward to more of your posts

You're kind of supposed to do both. You have to dig in with your niche so that you have a base to interact with. But you're also supposed to keep watch for when your expertise intersects with the mono, those are supposed to be your big projects. Every artist that lasted the test of time existed within their own binaries and deviated from them. It takes an insane amount of practice to be one step ahead of an internet audience.

Well based on the ~3% of people who watched the last video and subscribed (myself included) I'd guess most people who watched have no real interest in your art specifically but anybody who subscribed does. 3 subs/100 views is fairly high overall but I may be assuming more people did what I did and clicked on your channel to see what the rest of your videos were before following so I don't really make physical art so I wouldn't watch painting tutorials the way I do blender but assumed future videos would be art not KZitem/commentary related. Will definitely watch general process videos and video essays though. Also definitely the most sustainable way to make a career from KZitem for an artist is to use it to showcase your portfolio and also just show you can complete projects in order to get freelance clients.

Hi Morgan, i studied marketing and your essay was very on point. I felt the heavy pressure of this area not being the most ethical. And is a true struggle to be honest and authentic in the internet. I appreciate that you are wiling to try some other ways to make what you love profitable, but i must advise you to keep learning about theories of communication and specially mass communication so you can make it even more scalable. In my opinion, the algorithm now is changing so the best way to differentiate yourself is to be specialized. To me, i see it as a marketplace that you sell ideas people are willing to buy. So it has space for those who think about others and help them where it hurts. I wish you success, people like you are the most precious content creators. Stay strong, keep your integrity ❤

I think it's challenging to grow in your niche because people aren't necessarily searching for someone they’ve never heard of to watch them paint or showcase their work. Your previous video worked well because the title and thumbnail immediately gave us an idea of what to expect, and it posed an intriguing question: "What is this pyramid problem on KZitem?" That hooked viewers. However, something like "Here’s a collection of my sketchbooks" doesn't seem as attention-grabbing when compared to all the other suggested videos people see. It’s unfortunate that that’s the reality of KZitem. If your goal is to get more views and grow your channel, you have to play that game a bit i'm afraid. I think you can still create art content you’re passionate about, but you might need to reframe how you package it. While I don't follow many painting/drawing KZitemrs, I do watch creators who build furniture or work on similar projects. They manage to capture attention by turning their artistic skills into fun challenges or unique concepts that viewers instantly understand and want to click on. Despite me knowing nothing about furniture crafting. You’re probably creative enough to come up with some exciting ideas for your skills :) I’d love to see more commentary videos from you. You’re a natural at it. Once your audience grows (and I’m sure it will!), you could mix in some more relaxed, non-clickbaity art videos that would still get views. (By the way, I think the people who mentioned the audio in your last video were referring to the clicking sounds. Most video editors have a "de-clicker" effect that can fix that easily. It’s a pretty common audio thing, and some people even eat a green apple before recording to reduce the noise because it dries their mouth a bit or something.)

I can only speak about IG but what grinds my gears is the way people say that algorithm-based SM is a place where anyone can make it etc. without seeing the obvious - in the vast majority of cases only one kind of person actually makes it, and that's the extrovert who overshares and overexplains and shows their face and makes a LOT of video content. You have to be a creator who all but force-feeds your audience with easy "relatable content", nothing which requires thinking, just consuming and feeling. If you're not like that you have to pretend to be like that or your chances of being pushed out to the people who also aren't like that are abysmal. I've not found any new creators whom I vibe with for a long time because of this.

I'm glad you spoke on this. I hear you, especially since I started posting earlier this year, this series of thoughts resonates so deeply in my psyche. The hows and whys of filming, audio recording, editing, have been so daunting, let alone the entire "marketing" aspect of getting eyes on the video so the created art can be seen. Then all of that, resulting in what seems like small returns in attention is disheartening, particularly when a channel feels is a first foray into earning anything from art. It's rough--and because of that it's probably healthier to look at KZitem as another posting avenue that may end up with some revenue, rather than the end all be all. Honestly, I'm very grateful for your pyramid scheme video as it helped me spot a deep rabbit hole I hadn't fully stumbled into yet. It also lead me to your other videos, which are part of the reason I became a subscriber, as the deep dive video alone wouldn't have been enough of a push for me as a viewer. The fact that you'd been posting art and videos already lent credence to your points, plus the art only videos were great on their own. One thing is for sure, we are a far cry from the more "democratic", "everymans" platform that KZitem seemed to be in its early years; the crux of it is everyone is here-- there's a fight for attention and the "right" things to get it change from niche to niche, topic to topic, video to video. Which is part of why I think there's nothing wrong with variety in channel videos. From what I've seen--and this is purely speculative from probably too much time on this platform--people come for the video that caught their eye but they stay for you and what else you have to share, however it evolves. At the very least that's true for me as a viewer and I'm excited to see what happens from here.

I found you through the previous video as well, and find it interesting that it’s a lot of us artists that stumbled across it. I’ve for sure felt the “pyramid scheme-y” vibe from a lot of these KZitemrs (both artists and non-artists). I’m in the same boat in terms of being super on and off with making videos. I also tried out all of the above types of art videos that you mentioned and constantly find myself running out of things to talk about. The only videos that did well in numbers were art tech related subjects/reviews. I actually enjoy making those videos to help people find good options for things I personally use. I actually don’t watch very many KZitem artists these days. Often times I find myself scrubbing through these 2-3 hour long videos of artists working on their projects to be fascinated and inspired by the way they go about their work. I’m constantly finding myself wanting to make new drawing videos so I’ve been thinking about getting back into it again. Just don’t know how I want to tackle it this time around.

Some of my favorite creators right now are the people who show their creation process. People like Nerdforge, lizard leigh, adam savage, studson studio, ali spagnola, ten hundred, and probably others I'm forgetting. these videos are usually highly edited and a labor of love. but I'd be interested to hear your opinion on those types of art videos. Also, I love your tarot card designs :D

Ahh, to me, this is far from a "filler video"! You might not have prepared for it as extensively as for your last video, but you *have* worked many years to become the person who has the level of perceptiveness, sensitivity and articulation that you can bring to a more conversational video like this. I like how your conclusion on a Me+KZitem note. That overlapping sliver where what interests you, also interests others. What attracts me most on KZitem is watching people who are talking about something they truly enjoy talking & thinking about. There's an aliveness I can sense in these videos. Once they shift to only making things they *think* others want to hear from them, I'm out. I can hear the sparkle slip from their voice. I personally keep noticing that the more I share about what I feel called to share (and not what I think I have to share), the less expectations about numbers & results I'm clinging to. Which is freeing :)

if you haven't gone to markets already, i just want to say how ENJOYABLE it is working there. i sold crochet products with a business partner and i absolutely loved packing up all my stuff and laying it all out and chatting to people all day long. it was so exciting and fulfilling! i didn't make much money, and i don't think many people do, but the sheer joy i gained from doing it was so wonderful. sorry for all the comments but you're a really cool person and this video is really cool too

yes, they're amazing! I did my first market this year to test it out. I was a bit unprepared, but it was such an amazing experience to actually see people interact with my art in real life. I just need to prepare myself (and make some more art) before I commit to doing them regularly!

I love that you mentioned how popular it is for artists to essentially use their art footage as b-roll to talk about something often completely unrelated, but I will say, you seem to have great perspectives and have a gift for commentary. Personally I can respect both your art skill, and that you have something to say simultaneously, and I don't believe it's inherently a bad format, I'm sure if you did it you'd be very successful (though I understand if it's not something you want to do).

Thank you for a thoughtful insight into this phenomenon. I’m new to art but a career creative (freelance writer) and my suggestion for a fulfilling and long career is to invest in your skills and your IRL network. KZitem can be a creative outlet to see how your skills grow (over years, forget blowing up) but that’s about it. You will connect with some awesome people but it’s best not to think of it as a leg of your career. It’s a very frustrating path for the vast majority of us. Thats my take anyway.

I can relate to what you said, I started an art channel a few months ago and I did the opposite of you. I went to YT because on instagram is it impossible for me to grow, absolutely impossible. I hate creating short attention span content and making long yt videos is actually so much fun! Well... tons of work but also very rewarding. It's tough to find your style with video making and figuring out what yt and the audience want from you but I think you need to grind it hard in the beginning to have a solid library. What you said in your last video was super interesting because it is true and sad and I wish more artists would actually focus more on the actual art. Anyway, greetings to you and I'm now a subscriber 🙂

I found you from your last video, subscribed halfway through this one. Your art is gorgeous, and as an artist myself I'm interested in the process. *BUT!* I'm in a different discipline, so I'm not so much interested in the technical process of brush on canvas, but more the abstract creative process behind it and the artist's journey during the project. I'm personally going through a similar shift with my own channel. Trying to appeal to a broader version of myself and treating my channel more as the art itself and less as a marketing horn. And as someone who's made a fair few tutorials, I've never known anyone at any stage of their career that doesn't watch tutorials. At least not within my field. 😆

I found your channel because of the essay video, but I watched other videos from you and really enjoyed them! Remember that you can do any video content you want. If you want to do essays, do those, if you want to do art, do that! You don't have to stick to one subject or one type of video either. You can mix it up and do whatever you personally find interesting, because there's usually other people that will find it interesting too! Like you could do a video about your love of Doctor Who or the Art of Doctor Who because there's a lot of us Doctor Who fans out there that will watch!

That video lead me to you. You are amazing at what you do. I can’t wait to see more of YOU. I think your audio is great. After my 30 day challenge I’ll be doing a 30 day art journal challenge. YT is so weird. I don’t get it for sure. I just do what I like on here. I gave up on thumbnails. I use my old photography now, makes me happy. I do love the community I have found here. I’ll be going back to see your older content. I want to see your peanuts one first. I love the gang. I gave up IG to put all my effort into YT. I personally like longer more detailed content. I get frustrated at short attention span videos. Thank you for introducing yourself. You’re what I’m here for. (I watch videos all the way through) 😊 keep going. I wish you the best on your art store. I’ll be back. Promise.

I've been thinking this for a while now about KZitem not being for artists in the way that KZitemrs present it. Mostly because it ends up being videos on how much they make or how to find your style, which you've commented on. I put a lot of money into my channel but time is the thing I don't have and so it just sits there, haunting me. Also the advice on how to succeed on KZitem becomes so boring after a while, it's all the same.

I think you're a little jaded and that's ok. The awareness that you have of the situation clearly has you looking for an opportunity to rise above it and create something truly unique on KZitem. I also love the idea of "peddling your wares" in a tent at art markets and other events. Some of the most successful artists I know (in terms of actual sales of art works) have been able to make it because their work stands out in the markets they set up at, and they don't need a huge social media following to make those sales. So, make the videos you want to make and if the goal isn't to generate sales through KZitem then I hope you embrace the fact that you are growing a community that is able to resonate with what you have to say. And it's refreshing that you aren't going to try to sell us a course.

New viewer here. I’m going to check out your art videos next. And I think that’s the key. Musicians who have a hit song seldom sustain that level of fame. But that one hit gets them introduced to a much larger audience of people who like their core style than they would have been able to reach otherwise. Will the entire audience of the hit transfer that passion to the back catalogue? Nope. But there will be quite a few who love it and would never have known it without that one flash in the pan. Congrats, and I’m looking forward to seeing your art!

I think it's really common for people to be on YT for a long time making the videos that they wanted to make, not getting the kind of recognition that they hoped for, until one day they finally break the formula and talk really candidly about how they are giving up on something, or how they lost their job, or just their honest opinion on something. On one hand I see AI bros telling artists that we are replaceable and that nobody is going to miss us, but I'm seeing that the very opposite is true, people LIKE to get to know the person behind the art. They like getting to know artists even if their life isn't exciting or tragic. Half of what makes Van Gogh so important to this day, maybe even more than half, isn't his skill or techniques, it's because we feel like we know him, at first most of us hear about the ear incident but then you learn more and before you know it you feel like you know him as a person, and I don't think his art would be so valued today if he was harder to get to know. I've always been like you and wanted to be able to do my art and put it out there while hiding myself away at the same time, but like you I'm learning I might have to let people see me or hear my voice and opinions if we really want to be successful like we hoped. Even if you think you are boring or will just be adding to an echo chamber.

Hi, found you due to your last video coming up in my recommendations, I enjoyed your last video but forgot to sub until this one 😂 I have recently started a channel for my art (doll artist). I don't know really what kind of videos to make, I like having you tube on in the background while I work, so finding a balance of what I want to do vs what people want is difficult. Being an artist is in the fibre of who we are, giving up is not an option, art is what sustains us, it is as vital as breathing. Imagine a world without art, it would be dull, who would design clothes etc, etc........? I think there would be alot of rectangles being worn, or nakedness😂😂😂😂😂😂 Keep being you ✨️🎨🖼🪄

I feel like there's some strange thing that happens when you try to make a video out of obligation instead of because you enjoy it. It's as if people can sense it. I'm glad that you've sort of found an overlap between what you love to make and what people love to see, but I also hope that you don't not make certain things that you love because you assume that other people don't want to see it. If you make something with the intention of marketing it, people might not love it, but if you make something because you love it and you are passionate about making it, I think it will probably find the people who want to see it. I hope that makes sense? Also I loved this video! And the one about finding your style. And the one about the value of copying vs using references. I'm looking forward to whatever you choose to do going forward! And I love your hair

because you have such a great analytical mind, it would be really interesting hearing your analysis of for example different art styles, or even methods of visual communication. as a person who could not afford the education you have, i always wonder what i missed, how you think about your art, strokes, elements, edges ect. there are so many decisions done in the art project itself - i almost find it to be a self exploration to think about why i make certain decisions. my second hobby is plants. i often listen to a planttuber vlogging doing plant chores, so we are "doing them together", hearing their thoughts in the background. i would thoroughly enjoy hearing drawing-thoughts, if you can make this a thing. I hope i communicated my "need/niche" clearly enough. And if it would not bring you joy to fill it, or seem interesting or profitable to do it, dont. Best of luck in whatever you are up to!

As someone who also took forever to figure out mic settings. Honestly, all you have to do is use the compressor and normalize setting in audacity. You can try to add bass boost or noise reduction, which I think you’re doing here, but I think for the average watcher, normalize and compressor is all you need.

tbh i don't even think it's entitlement, it's more that these strategies are intentionally misleading, and therefore setting an expectation that just does not work. they make it look like the strategies are 100% guaranteed success, when it's really not. so beginner artists are fooled into thinking it's easy. it's not.

Suggestion… while you’re doing your commentary, do your art.. have a two camera angle, you’re face and your art. That way you get the people who love art and people who are interested on your thoughts above art. The topic that yt is pushing out is still kinda sorta connecting to art universe, sorta.

you made me realise that when we are sharing our art we are being selfish. But I will not accept the fact that I have to make videos that youtube wants. seems like I will be alone in my corner for a long time : ) but it is nice to meet you so I am glad you broke the cycle and youtube recommended me to your channel. Maybe artists are all selfish, we could have been doctors in the first place : )
