Just found your channel and my gosh, I love this video! I loved everything you said about women and the feeling of needing to look pretty and perfect because I am someone who has felt like I can’t make a video or go outside without makeup. I’m better now at accepting my natural face without makeup and I love how you’re preaching that you don’t need to be a “sexy” reader to appeal to men. Women can just read and talk about books because they want to, we shouldn’t feel the need to be pretty or prove anything to anyone, especially men. Love this! Thanks girl.

Your ability to inject humour into every topic is amazing the Ronald Reagan cha cha sliding bit was great haha I had a similar experience to you during Covid where I stopped wearing makeup and reading more feminist literature! I was really big in the makeup/beauty scene when I was younger and I always thought it was harmless but it’s true that you do see yourself differently and now I see my natural face as the default and that feels so much better! For a while I thought the pandemic would have a bigger impact in that regard because wearing makeup became less important for everyone and impractical with masks but sadly I think it just contributed to a different trend of “clean girl makeup” (god just typing that i cringed) and selling overpriced skincare products to young girls. Also the reason I got so obsessed with makeup as a teenager I think is because it was the only women focused online community I could find. It would be great if booktube could have been an alternative to that but unfortunatelyy it largely turned out to be just as superficial. Oh and the video idea sounds interesting I have never really thought about it like that calling booktube a conservative space but would like to hear more of your thoughts!

yeeeep it's like that sis! i used to be super into makeup too--i remember watching bethany mota do her makeup and feeling stressed out that i had so many products i needed to buy to do my makeup "right." now my third eye is so open that i'm like My Dark Circles Make Me Look Intelligent And Brooding 🧐😂 and ok i will think about it...it'll take a lot of research so if i end up doing it it may not be out for some time. but it's back on the list!

As someone that just got back into watching book related content, this is something that i actually never thought much about! I'm so happy that there's people like you out there that make me look at things a little more critically.

This is a suuuper important topic. You're incisive and you're so so right. Thank you for the No Makeup Videos playlist-- never thought of that but of COURSE it's important for us to see women's natural faces in order to enjoy our own! Daaang

When I loved reading as a kid I would have never dreamed of any of this stuff. Now I got back into reading as an adult and the booktok thing seems to be everywhere even though I'm not on tiktok. And booktube too, I rarely watch any videos because they don't help me to find new books. So this was some very interesting insight. You are the first youtuber for books I really enjoy (You definitely need more subscribers !)

That is such high praise, thank you!! I try to create the kind of content I'd like to see since I don't really like booktube either 🙂❤
