Poisonous snakes cause quite understandable horror and rejection. It seems that a creature that can frighten an elephant can feel safe. But it's not! There is always a better predator in the wild! There are several animals that are not only able to cope with poisonous snakes, but even purposefully hunt them!
Snakes generally have enough natural enemies. From time to time they are attacked by cats that use their speed and reaction. Eagles and falcons can also attack snakes. The birds attack from the sky, stun the snake, and secure their dinner with one blow. And even ordinary pigs can trample a poisonous snake! The teeth of a reptile are simply not long enough to penetrate deeper than a thick layer of fat.
However, there are animals that do not accidentally, but purposefully hunt poisonous snakes. Of course, everyone knows the mongoose - this miniature animal can surprise you!
The mongoose is a bit like a ferret - and for good reason, because they are relatives that belong to the same viverrid family. That's just the reaction speed and reflexes of the mongoose are so developed that it seems that even a cheetah is not able to get ahead of him! No, the mongoose is not happy with snake races - but his dash is so fast that even the camera is difficult to follow.
But speed is not the only trump card of this beast. In duels against the cobra, he also wins thanks to desperate but winning tactics. If some other predators avoid the head of the snake and try to grab it by the tail, then the mongoose, on the contrary, purposefully attacks the head! And all because of the size. Mongooses do not grow even up to half a meter. An adult cobra is usually three or even four times as long, and with its collar, it really towers over the enemy ...
But the modest size of the mongoose is its advantage. It is thanks to the narrow muzzle that the beast manages to grab the snake before it inflicts a fatal bite. The coarse fur cannot protect against a direct blow from the fangs of a cobra, but it protects against accidental bites. As a result, the mongoose looks at the snake, from which lions and hyenas run away, as if for dinner. Which, in fact, the snake for them is.
But from whom you do not expect an attack on a poisonous snake, it is from the most ordinary poultry! One gets the impression that any turkey or chicken only pretends to be defenseless, and under the cover of night they turn into fearless snake hunters.
No, poultry does not prey on snakes, but in many regions of the planet, they are surprisingly often encountered and fought back. For example, as in the case when a cobra crawled up to a turkey with offspring, clearly counting on easy prey and a hearty meal. What a mistake it was! The bird not only covered the cubs with itself, but rushed into a furious attack! Although its wings are too weak for active flight, they allowed the turkey to instantly strike and move away from the cobra's attack zone. Feathers knocked down bites and stunned the reptile!
This chicken fought off three cobras at once to protect the chickens! If there are several poultry, the cobra already has to defend itself so as not to turn into dinner. Apparently, at such moments, the birds remember that their distant ancestor is a tyrannosaurus rex. Now we have to look at poultry a little differently.
But the coolest and most insane attacks on poisonous snakes are carried out by one type of bird - this is the secretary bird. Although their appearance seems rather peculiar with their long crane-like legs, they are actually distant relatives of hawks and eagles. Moreover, this is a very ancient species of birds that appeared on the planet millions of years ago.
