8:30 I can confirm this, as a Valvoline oil repair shop burned down near me from a technician doing something very similar. Dude was drilling into a tank full of gas, something ignited, and flaming gas was everywhere. When I sold my 99 Durango 5 years ago, I told my wife I put it on Craigs list for $1500. She thought I was crazy to think it was worth that much. I told her I did not think it was worth that much. “The first guy to offer me $500 or more will get it”. First guy came to look at it and I was honest about disclosing all of its bad points/issues as well as good points. He asked if I would take $1200 for it. I pretended to contemplate that offer for about 6 seconds, then said yes. I do miss that truck sometimes. But then it gets cold and at the very least, I appreciate having a vehicle with a working heater.

Small block La based engines will run forever. $1500 is honestly not a bad price for one running with no major issues..... the auto trans used used in 90s chrystler is another story though
@fieraci8500
Жыл бұрын
I had that trans rebuilt. The truck had a list of other issues and I was tired of dumping money into repairs for as long as I did. I do miss the 'snow beast' sometimes, but it's last straw was the heater core exploding the day before February's biting cold snap started, and I sure as sh*t wasn't going to be doing that job. I bypassed the core and truly suffered through winter, looking to buying a new car come spring. By then, other nagging things went wrong that I had to repair to get by (2 brake cylinders...not much money spent there but you know what a PIA job that is, especially in winter out in a driveway), etc. The entire exhaust was patched up to be silent, but was going to let loose real soon. The steering shaft came apart in my hand when I gave it a good shake...Etc. Spring came and I could feel the front axle dragging. Both CV's were knackered, boots torn, dry and getting toward seized. Front wheel bearings were suspect as well. That was the day I thought the old boy would not get me to work for the rest of the week. Was driving the kid to the dentist on a Saturday and passed a Subaru dealership. Told the kid "We are stopping there on the way home and I'm buying a Subaru." (Yeah, whatever Dad). So we stop in, and 40 min later her mom texts her asking how the dentist went... "Went Fine. Dad just bought a brand new Subaru. You will have to give him a ride to pick it up tomorrow.".... (WHAAAAAT!?!?!?). The Durango sold 3 days later. I could not bear to watch it drive away, so I just shook the guys hand, turned and went in the house.

Ahh 1st Gen Durangos…such great memories. Brother in law bought one in Tennessee, drove to South Dakota where we tested it’s durability on a Gambler run. After 500 miles of gravel roads and dirt trails, it’s transmission was slightly less happy, it’s brakes cooked, and the Viper esque white stripes we added to its blue finish did not add horsepower. But he managed to drive it all the way home and sell it for profit.

This one had the 4.7 magnum, not the 5.2 or 5.9 so good riddance. Those engines were shit 20 years ago and we're even more shit when they were "redesigned" (read over engineered to keep the tooling around a little longer) with two DIFFERENT types of spark plugs per cylinder. That's right, you had to buy platinums and coppers to keep that engine running. And God help you if that oil got the least bit dirty.

My LeBaron once had a problem where if you gave it too much gas, it would blow the engine main fuse and die. Took me a while to figure out that there were exposed wires hanging out near a metal surface that would get shorted to ground if the engine physically moved too much in the engine bay. So I'm guessing that major electrical problem wasn't really that big of a deal, but I'll grant you everything else. Plus, those Durangos sure do like to rust out like that, under the paint.

Robert, your kitchen looks 100 times better than British kitchens straight out of the 70s. Flat doors with flat paint colors which were sort-of the sad, sorry cousins of bright colors. Aluminium handle strips all along the tops of the doors which weren't actually bad if you remembered which side to pull. Tiles everywhere, with grout. did I mention everything was yellowed with age in 90% of the kitchens I remember. That's really the reason for the sad colors. Blue was the most common by far, and it didn't age well. The top cupboard doors were sometimes white which showed the yellowing worse. And all of this is associated in my mind with the smells of homes with owners too old to clean properly. But if I look back far enough, I can remember a kitchen less aged, with very cheerful bright yellow cupboard doors which looked very nice and I'm sure wouldn't have shown their age so badly. What you've got there looks like a 90s British kitchen. That style had its own problems, especially too much oppressive orange wood, but yours looks all right on camera.

After I bought it a idled it home took me less than 10 minutes to find the problem. It was the wiring harness that ran through a metal shield next to the motor mount. When you reved the engine especially under load the twist action would lift the engine slightly and contact a worn wire that ran to the ignition. I bought a 2005 Durango with 230,000 miles on it off a family member in 2018 for $100. I figured, what the hell I'd drive it until it died. I drove it for 2 years until COVID-19 happened and I started working from home full time, then it sat in a parking spot for 2 years without being fired up once. Then my apartment complex towed it because they thought it was abandoned. At this point it had 265,000 miles on it. With a bit of coaxing, I got it started up at the impound lot and drove it home. Then it sat again until 2023 when someone asked to buy it off me for $400, so I made a $300 profit. He not only fixed it up, he had the engine rebuilt and he even restored the interior. Durangos are just impossible to kill it seems.

I really liked the old "destruction review" videos. It was some silly fun and I'm somewhat disappointed that we didn't get to see more "pulling on things and guess what comes loose".

I have an old dodge truck from the same gen. Its not pretty either, and its got 250k miles, but no signs of stopping. Its about the slowest thing you can safely drive and gets 10mpg, but its the most reliable car I own lol

You cab put out a match in a gas. It's the vapors that combust first (that's why you mix air and gas in ICE) :)

My dad had a 2003 SLT 4.6 4wd, i loved that thing, same color as this one too. He got it brand new in 02 right before the disgusting 2nd gen came out. I was actually brought home from the hospital as a newborn in it. Sadly i never got to drive it as i was about 13 when he sold it to a friend, who then traded it for some shitty van without us knowing a couple years ago. I really want to find a 2003 with a 5.9 in graphite and clean it up to show my dad again cause he also misses it even if he wont say it.

I kinda liked the body style of the Durango when it came out. But it was a Dodge product, so that told me ball joints would let go between 60k and 80k, usually on a highway at speed. Engines might suddenly decide to drop valve seats, oil pumps, or rod bearings just for the fun of it. Maybe then the transmission would eat its clutches and random electrical issues to make a nice warm fire. Since nothing seems to burn like a Dodge, except maybe a late 90's Ford SUV, like a the Explorer or Expedition. Although I hear the mid 2000's F-150 made a good showing for spontaneous combustion. And before anyone thinks "oh this guy's a Chevy guy". Nope. Gm products can fill a book for the electrical issues, valve lifters, valve seats, piston rings, rear ends, and can't forget about surprise fires.
