Genuinely the blindness jokes in Avatar are top notch, the "I think we're gonna run into a similar problem" bit with sending the letters is still one of the best jokes ever written. Writing about a handicap is very often done with pity or compassion, but rarely with empathy, fun and genuine understanding. Avatar always made sure that Toph isn't above suffering the same slapstick humor as anyone else, but other than that they don't make fun of her being blind, but always of her friends momentarily forgetting her handicap. This show having so many people who have handicaps and scars, and have those traits be important to the plot is such a good aspect of Avatar.

46:10 On this point specifically, if you remember the beach episode, Mai was never allowed normal self-expression. She was taught to essentially "behave, sit still, be quiet, outwardly feeling too much will harm you're father's reputation." Given that, it isn't any wonder that she doesn't know how to draw emotional discussion out of Zuko. She loves him, she knows he's in distress, and she wants to help him feel better. But, she doesn't understand how. Mai and Zuko's biggest problem as a couple was never a lack of love, chemistry, or compatibility - it was a lack of communication (from both ends). basically each element has their natural opposite. aang as an air bender struggled with earthbending because the bending styles are opposites (evading and defense vs. standing your ground and offense) and fire and water are natural opposites, with fire being aggressive and using your own energy, while water is adaptive and uses your opponents energy against you. a waterbender would struggle with fire, and an earthbender would struggle with airbending. bending comes from the spirit and personality, and the way you’re raised affects who you are, as well as what you’ll struggle with.

Fun fact: they aired the bloodbending episode around Halloween (either right before or right after). As someone never allowed to celebrate the holiday (I'm sure you can guess why) this was the closest thing I ever had to watching a scary movie growing up. To say it has a special place in my heart isn't exactly... 'accurate', but I definitely have an appreciation for it sneaking in and giving me a little piece of how others celebrated Halloween and how it felt as a kid. Also I've seen a lot of people analyze how they did an amazing job demonstrating consent and making it easier to understand SA. It's easier to imagine when you imagine the horrors of someone taking over your blood (control of your body) and forcing you to do things that way. I'm guessing that's why it's so creepy on an almost physical level. Good reactions! Hope you're still having fun! :D

Some or a few fans called episode 9 unnessesary. I find it quite relateable. Last year I had to take an non-school related exam. Few days before the exam... I was a nervous wreck. I drove myself crazy and didn't sleep well. But I enden up passing. But a few months later I had to do Part 2 of the Exam. And the whole process I described began again... I also passed the 2. Exam. But the lack of sleep and the sort of panic attacks I had before each Exam...

Gotta respect Sokka letting Aang decide whether or not to fight the Firelord. Back in Book 1 there was a disagreement between Sokka and Katara where Katara said if anyone is their leader it's Aang since he's the Avatar but Sokka countered with Aang just being a goofy kid. Now he's trusting Aang's decision on fighting the Firelord and the fate of the invasion plan which was all Sokka's plan.

29:38 I get your point and do agree under normal circumstances, but when you're desperate and this is the only thing you have available, the life of a few flower that will grow back isn't as important. Though they do kind of explain that a bit more further into the episode. But going around and taking water out of plants for no reason when there's better options, yeah that I'm not a fan of.

So a couple of things: Roku’s struggle with waterbending is the same as Aang’s struggle with Earth. Hama couldn’t use the water in the air in the prison because they pumped dry air to it as she said. Katara’s slow-mo with the water bending during her fight with Hama is a complete surprise to Hama because like Iroh said in Book 2, water bending is a push and pull, like Katara and master Paku’s fight in book 1, they would take the water and redirect it. Katara’s block is not a water bending technique but an earth bending one that one can only assume she learned by watching Toph. Great video, btw, I love these reactions .

fun fact about Combustion man: back when the gaang first encountered him, aang was the first one to counter his attack. before firing, he will always inhale sharply which causes a dramatic shift in air pressure. the ability to sense this change in pressure gives air benders a slight advantage against combustion benders by having near perfect awareness of shifts in air quality/pressure.

Water is Roku’s opposite element. Water is about turning your opponents energy against them meanwhile firebending is about using your own energy to generate fire. The reason Earthbending was hard for Aang is because Earthbending is about being rooted and facing everything head-on meanwhile airbending is about freedom and letting go of earthly attachment.

I can't wait to watch this tonight! Zuko standing up to Ozai is one of my favourite scenes in television history! I get so emotional every time. It's just so amazing, so impactful, and so meaningful. This is the culmination of Zuko's arc. All of his trauma, his shame, his years of believing that he deserved what happened to him, and that he had to *earn* his father's love and respect. All leading up to this moment when he finally admits that it was wrong. Now, he has experienced the world as a refugee, hunted by the Fire Nation. He has seen how his family and his nation have hurt people, and how they've hurt the world. Now, he no longer needs to restore his own honour - he already has that. He needs to restore the honour of the Fire Nation, by helping to undo the damage they've done, and bringing peace to the world. It's time to begin healing, both for Zuko, and the world. Everything about this moment is just so perfect.

In case you were wondering why Azulon targeted the Southern Water Tribe specifically, it's because if the Air Nomad avatar did die, he would've been reincarnated in the SWT (since the spirit alternates between the north and south with every cycle). They were trying to find the avatar if they were among them.
@LegioXXI
7 ай бұрын
Well, there still was the northern watertribe. I think if it comes to having an Avatar at all, the spirits would rather just skip the southern tribe instead of letting the Avatar cycle die, especially because the Avatar as a concept is older than the 4 nations. Even if both tribes would fall, its likely that the spirits would even consider more non-conventional water benders like the swamp people to let the Avatar be reincarnated in. The show already proves that in times of real desperations, the spirits - or the universe itself for that matter - are willing to make exceptions to ensure balance is restored, its already shown in the season 1 finale. This is why breaking the Avatar cycle is actually far more difficult than the fire nations think it is. And it seems like the fire nation also isn't even too confident in having broken avatar cycle by removing all water benders from the southern watertribe, hence why Zhao took Aang prisoner despite his opportunity to end him right then and there. I don't think the fire nation would insist so much on capturing the avatar if they really believed their southern raids would have broken the reincarnation cycle. Even when Azula hit Aang with lightning, she didn't do it for the larger goal of ending the Avatar cycle, she did it because the opportunity was there and Aang was about to threaten their grip on Ba Sing Se. I don't even know she or anyone else for that matter knows that the Avatar cycle would end if he is killed in the Avatar state. I think the reason why they took the southern benders away is far more simple: They only consider waterbenders as a real threat to their naval power since they can challenge the Fire Navy even without having industrialised war ships. And the only reason why they didn't to the same to the northern tribe is because they could withstand their attacks. If ending the Avatar cycle really was their main goal, it would have been a far better strategy to just kill Aang after the siege of the north (up to that point they severely underestimated Aang and insisted on capturing him) and play the long game, since a new-born Avatar would simply take too long to be fully-realized - or even grow up at the first place. By that point, they would have conquered Ba Sing Se, probably compensated their losses at the siege of the north (and tried again, since this time no Avatar can interfere) and their Air Force would have been built-up, rendering all walls and fortifications useless. The Fire Nation would control the seas and the skies, no airbenders would mean a new avatar could not learn airbending and therefore not threaten their air power. Even without the comet the fire nation would have won by simply having a few more years, no matter if the Avatar was reincarnated or not.

So in "The Avatar and the Firelord" Roku told Aang to go to his home island on the Summer Solstice which means that that episode is officially the start of summer and the comet is coming at the end of summer. Also this means it's been exactly 6 months since Aang first contacted Roku's spirit and first found out about the comet.

1:06:36 no, but imagine the Avatar - who was probably thought of as a myth or just gone during your whole life minus a year or 2 ago - telling you that you are one of the bravest and strongest humans for taking part in a battle that got closer than anything else ever did to winning a 100 year war. Live or die, that would seriously give you some peace of mind in that time.

36:23 I honestly think Katara is so distraught just because she KNOWS how to bloodbend, she can’t literally unlearn it. She sees it as a moral crime and her beliefs are so important to her. Katara is confronted with revenge corrupting victims of fire nation colonialism/genocide frequently because that’s her temptation. She’s so filled with love but that passion can be scary if she gives into darkness. She immediately said she never wanted that kind of power at all, I suspect she’s already afraid she’ll use it either for revenge or to protect her loved ones. Now that Katara knows bloodbending, even if she has one of the best hearts, she still is capable of violating someone that way…she’ll always have to choose NOT to use it if she wants to keep with her moral belief.

5:00 Firebending is active, it's all about what you do. Waterbending is reactive it changes the environment arount it or the opponents offense into your defence. Airbending also acts on soemthign that is already there but that something is on something that is basically everywhere. And breath control is already an improtant part of firebending hence airbending is a much shorter step for firebenders.

Waterbending is based on tai chi, which uses redirection of your opponent's attacks. Fire bending comes from within, from the breath. They are opposite elements and fighting styles, but Roku simply meant it was challenging because it was the opposite of his personality, like Aang and earthbending.

I think waterbending is particularly difficult because it requires a lot of balance, that is also why waterbending is represented by yin-yang and the moon's push and pull. I think the moves are specific because waterbenders control an element that is very tanginble like earth but very flexible almost like air. While fire, the exact opposite is very direct and uses your life force forward, than water bending which I imagine is like balancing a ball and striking with it. That is why Iroh learned lightning redirection because he learned how to balance that force and bend it.

Blood bending in itself could be very useful for medical waterbending. From preventing people to bleed out and managing internal bleeding better, it may even be used to keep a heart beating. The same goes for airbending, it can be used to control breathing (I once read a fanfic where Zuko was poisoned and Katara and Aang used their bending to keep him alive)

I hope you see this, Why Waterbending was a challenge to Roku, lots of things, back on the first episode where Toph trained Aang, Katara told him that water and fire were opposite like air with earth, also your personality affects your bending, other logical things are like he was on the north pole a place so different to his homeland unlike the earth kingdom, where he as a firebender whos power comes from breathing can be difficult to him just being there. Also other thing lots of people theorize that earth benders can manipulate the metals inside the human body but thats is imposible unlike bloodbending, Toph doesnt bend metal but the earth inside the metal, and unlike water in blood, metals exist in microquantity
@angelinadolcini3000

Since Roku was a born firebender, waterbending was the toughest for him to learn because its the natural opposite of fire. Similar to how earthbending was difficult for Aang to learn because he's an Airbender.
