When we were on the farm we had a grinder/mixer. We ground older hay with good hay, threw in some minerals and a small amount of grain, the cows thought they were eating dessert, lol. However, the main reason for the grinder/mixer was cutting up straw, with the large screen in the straw was cut about 1 1/2" long, perfect for bedding. Also the straw lasted a lot longer, for pens we would add a bale of straw on top. Keep smilin.

I used to deliver molasses to the dairies here in the central valley of California in the United States and I always enjoyed the dairies and the smell. But there was acouple dairies that had the worst smell probably because of what they were feeding at those dairies. But when you smell a dairy you know that you're in the country and I've always enjoyed being out away from the city life!

I'd like to see the Angus/Highland cross carcass, how they dress out as Highland's put their fat marbled through the meat, not in a thick layer under the skin. So this could be a premium that's the result of a Highland firing blanks - I hope do a Highland cross if you make a video of from grass to table.

Although you didn't seem to have any problems this time, i know you do find cows are reluctant to go into the trailer. Sprinkle just a little straw on the ramp and they should load easier. It breaks up the shiny surface and they feel more confident underfoot. 😁

Hi Tom, I hear you say that straw is slow to break down, in a way it's like leaf litter. Suggest you take a look at how household and commercial food waste is being turned into compost. Aeration is key to speeding up the decomposition process as it allows the bacteria to do it's job. Your stacking muck and leaving it to decompose pretty much on it's own which has been the practice on farms for 100s of years. If you could find a way to stir the muck more frequently say every other day and introduce air into the heap the straw should break down more quickly and efficiently.💩💩💩
