When Enterprise focused on episodes where we saw why the Humans had a federation and how they started creating it the show was fantastic. It's this temporal war and the save the universe stuff that annoyed me. One great example is when they investigate the Vulcan monastery, find out it's a Vulcan listening post and give the information to the Andorians they showed that they wanted to help everyone, not just their ally. There was more than enough to create great stories along this line and they just veered to far off into a plotline that tried too hard to be a save the universe story. Also, Hoshi in the alternate dimension was just too hot for words.

Not only wouldn't they understand it, they don't have the knowledge or materials to build it. A modern smartphone would literally seem like magic to the people living in 1921

I really liked the "hands on" technology Enterprise was all about, no energy shields but armor plating, the doors were like in a space ship, you had the hand grips across the places for weightless operation and so on. The whole universe was open to make stories about begin of the Federation like the first season, and they ruined that possibility with the Xindi story of cold time war. Even with the xindi story, the series staid faithful for its style that was refreshing. It is as well interesting that all the characters in the Enterprise were somewhat believable. "On the ground" and sensible.

It wasn't just the ratings. The CEO at the time wanted nothing to do with Star Trek, so he didn't put much money or effort into it, and put it in terrible time slots just to throw it in the trash. The Fans ACTUALLY kept TOS alive by signing a huge petition that put it up for a 3rd season. Same for Enterprise after Season 4. And then they threw THAT CEO in the trash after his harassment scandals. Then they merged with Viacom. It would have survived if they had more FAITH OF THE HEEEEEAAAAAART! Now we have something that's sub-par mediocre trash, survived near company bankruptcy after screwing and losing foreign investors, had to re-film the first six episodes of season 2 just because of bad budgeting choices, and yet STILL gets renewed for a 4th season. So... yeah... irony is definitely heavily at play here.
@Dorian-_-Gray
2 жыл бұрын
The _opposite_ of ironic, really. As a TV franchise, Star Trek's ratings had declined across _all_ shows since halfway through _Next Generation._ _Enterprise_ was cancelled for the same reason that most TV shows are: almost no one was watching it and the ratings fell into a ditch.

I did not like Enterprise when it first appeared. As Enterprise aged, like other Star Trek programs, the writing got better. @sixstanger00

A Romulan war would've been a major breach of continuity, as Captain Kirk on _Enterprise NCC-1701_ was the first major direct contact with Romulans by the Federation, which would've been some hundred years after the events of _Enterprise._ It would be bizarre for Kirk to go into a situation where they may bump into Romulans and there be no mention of a major war between them only a hundred years earlier. That would be like going into a situation where you think you may run into Nazi military units and no one recalling WWII.
@Commanderziff

@@sixstanger00 Rewatch TOS 'Balance of Terror', Spock specifically mentions the conflict with the Romulans "A century ago". That's why the neutral zone exists, because there was a war, at the end of which the neutral zone was part of the treaty. That's why it's such a big deal to go close to it, because the last war was so vicious. Kirk is not the first Federation vessel to have direct contact with the Romulans, they were just the first ones to get a look at them. The only real continuity error is Spock declaring that the war was fought with primitive atomic weapons. I don't think the phase cannons, and torpedoes of Enterprise really count as that, but I could be wrong. The Romulan war, a brutal conflict from a century earlier, was part of cannon from the very first mention of the Romulans. It would have been cool to see it.

It’s a real shame that the audiences’ general lack of interest in Enterprise directly translated to a general lack of interest in what was/has been Trek’s ultimate story, the Temporal (Cold) War. The idea was ambitious as hell, with the existence of two canonical timelines and a dizzying series of (non-)events. But there’s no way a general audience would have been able to follow it. For example, people dislike Discovery’s rewriting the events of TOS when that was the entire point of the alternate timeline created by Star Trek 2009. To the studio’s credit though, at least they let the writers continue with the story in Star Trek Online. And it’s possible it hasn’t been abandoned for the televised serials since Discovery (which is set in the Kelvin timeline like Enterprise) has traveled through time to a version of the Federation and Starfleet that nobody has any record of (never mind her drive tech). It looks like Picard might also start dipping into it too? Time will tell.

And don't forget that Star trek (2009) was a separate "timeline" for legal reasons.

Something that doesn't make sense. It has since been said that if Enterprise continued it would have been revealed that Archer was the future person Silik talks to. Which means that Archer ordered the deaths of all those people.

Everything about the time travel plots in Enterprise smacked of insecurity on the part of the writing team. It was like they set the show in a pre-TOS time, then were afraid that people wouldn't be interested in an anachronistic series so they tried to jazz it up with hyper-futuristic stuff. Same way they insulted the series in the end with the finale, relegating the entire show to Riker's holodeck time. They should have just stuck to their guns and wrote stories about the founding of the Federation, etc.

The sad part about Star Trek Enterprise was that most people thought it was the worst Star Trek series compared to everything else at that time. It's even sadder that Paramount and CBS screwed up the franchise with Star Trek Discovery, the latest Star Trek movies (new timeline), and the piddling Star Trek (Lower Decks) cartoon series. This is what you get when the boss of CBS Les Moonves hated science fiction and hired people that didn't follow or know anything about Star Trek. Every single Star Trek production recently has been an utter failure. No one at CBS, Viacom, or Paramount know what the hell they're doing.

I thought Discovery Season 2 was pretty good. But Picard, Lower Decks, and at least one of those JJ-verse movies - terrible. At least Discovery Season 1 was ambitious - it's just that it failed so badly.

_Lower Decks_ is good. _Picard_ is melodramatic, but less worse than _Discovery._

@@mardus_ee Thanks for the response. All the shows are okay, you just cannot connect the productions together without seeing the continuity problems which is why I advise watching without relying that they connect to anything else made.

@@fturla___156 There actually isn't that many continuity problems with Disco. OR Picard. Pretty much everything they overwrote was Beta canon to begin with, and Discovery was basically "Ret-Goned" out of Federation History at the end of Season 2 in order to prevent Control or anything like it from ever finding the Sphere Data.

Daniels is from the future. The Suliban didn't chase. It wasn't written in history so it didn't (won't) happen. (OP referring to 3:31 , for anyone else reading this.) Bible movies don't stray from the written pages because the audience knows "it didn't happen (like that.)" [This is a literary device, let's leave religious discussion out of it.]

More goofy Star Trek alien race names - this time, it's the "Suliban", which name is likely based on the Irish-Gaelic surname "O'Suileabhain", which is Anglicized to "Sullivan". Hollywood is so freakin' weird - it must all the drugs. Anyway, the surname "Sullivan" means "hawk eye" in ancient Irish-Gaelic. That's right, an arch-nemesis of Archer was "The Sullivans". Perhaps, "The Fighting Sullivans"?

For all intents and purposes, time travel is magic. That's why prior to this crap here, the producers had enough sense to only use time travel "passively" - it was something that happened to Enterprise, not something they could in any way control.

@@ricksimon9867 Negligible different between the 2. It's still time travel to solve problems. The real difference is that with ST4, it's to solve a problem to undo humanity's mistakes, whereas in Enterprise, it's time travel to counter the effects of other time travel. That's literally what sparks what the Suliban do and how. Ironically, time travel is almost always something being done *to* the Enterprise whenever it comes up.

@@ricksimon9867 No, I'm sticking with it. Enterprise was generally reacting to Time Travel happening most of the time, while Star Trek 4 *intentionally used time travel to solve a problem that was *not* caused by time travel to begin with.

I agree with jd190d. But I would also add that with each season, the Archer character became worse and worse. By the end it was all yelling and bad acting. The show became a dead end.
