Gas engine, Fill it up it's ready to go again & again. Battery is having major problems in the cold areas especially snow areas, look what happened few weeks ago with the snow storm in the East coast, People driving Tesla's were stranded on the side of the road because their car shut off and ran out of battery. They were going up to truckers (in diesels) asking for blankets & warmth. Gas engines can get easy 150+ hours on a engine, How long can the electric get? Would love to see a electric engine do a 30 minute outdoor moto in the mud, see how that will workout. Going to a supercross race & not hearing any over revs or backfiring will be a snooze fest Imagine going to a Monster truck show and not hearing no powerful V8 sounds? Boring There's a reason why Formula 1 said they will not be going to electric cars ever. It will be boring. Clutch?? That was only necessary when I was stopped on my Husky 400 Cross. Every shift was clutchless, even under full power, well enough that you did not endo the bike. I never see the modern riders on a hill climb put their nose so close to the front tire it drips snot on it. Yet Malcolm Smith cleared the Widowmaker like he was on a small hill. My humble opinion is that the so called dirt bike now is tailored for jumping. I love my eBike which I made using a little 3KW cyclone motor. I designed an eMoped in 1994. We had 1000 sets of parts for it. We had an order from Hawaii for all of that 1000. One person said no in our company. Governed to 30 mph, start from a standstill up a 20% grade when bike and rider totalled 400 pounds. We put 3000 miles on one testing 24/7 swapping batteries and riders. Range with a combination of accels, WOT and speed variations was 20 miles. At 10 mph it would get over 30 miles. That with Lead Acid. The motor was a switched reluctance. Losing phases in either the controller or the motor still let it run on fewer phases.

The E-bikes settle into the ground and respond so fast, it’s just a awesome feeling. The handling is slower feeling because it settles the bumps, but also more responsive because there’s no engine inertia pulling it around. Ebike haters just don’t have a clue how badass the ebikes are going to be.

When Josh is explaining the rhythm section, he’s trying to describe the way the suspension stays unloaded or holds up a better because of engine rotation. With no gyroscopic energy the suspension settles a lot more and rides deeper in the travel through the rhythm. Suspension is going to need to be re-thought a little bit for the ebikes the high and low speed circuits will be need to be valved to more extreme ends of the spectrum of something.

Since this is designed as an MX bike, having a battery that has the equivalent of 1 tank of gas on a 450 MX bike is their target. If they actually meet that, then perfect. They claim it will last a MXGP with a pro rider. That is 30 minutes plus 2 laps. When done, recharge the battery. In an MX bike, having a battery sized to complete one race is the perfect. It would be a waist to carry around more battery than needed for one race. Same reason why MX bikes have small gas tanks rather than big gas tanks like an enduro or dual sport bike. Ride the race, recharge it for the next race. Stark has mentioned they are going to release a dual sport version as well. Hopefully there will be more changes than just adding lights and turn signals. Like ICE MX vs ICE dual sport, softer suspension, stronger subframe, passenger pegs, long range (in this case, larger battery instead of larger gas tank). Range will be more important so a larger (though heavier) battery would be in order. The Varg is about the same weight as 450 MX bikes (a few pounds lighter than some and a few pounds heavier than others), but a dual sport won't be racing so rather than 242lbs like the Varg, they could (and hopefully will) design a larger battery. 300 - 330lb dual sport is still plenty light and would give a lot more trail time than the 6kw battery of the Varg. It won't end up with enough range for high speed road riding, but a little more range would be nice for forest service roads and connecting those with short, low speed roads. I ride both ICE and EV dirtbikes and love them both. I'll always have both as they just ride very different. I love all powersports and ripping around on anything is fun. This just adds one more fun option.

Until Honda, Kawi or KTM comes out with one and we see Chase Sexton ripping one around a track- I'm taking it with a grain of salt. People can barely afford to race 4-strokes, so what makes anyone think that these $13k electric bikes will be common place around the race track? Not to mention these things weigh 30lbs more than a stock 450.
@travelingmike40
2 жыл бұрын
“people can barely afford to race 4-strokes”, you answered your question. Electric has very few parts and maintenance is nil on the motor/battery. The lightest bike ktm 222# plus 2 gal gas- 236#- so the Stark is 6 lbs heavier but lower center of weight with low inertia so rides much lighter. My Yz450f is 251# with a full tank. This bike also comes with kyb suspension set to you saving a chunk, aftermarket wheelset with brembo brakes. No aftermarket pipe/muffler to buy. The factory ktm 11,699$ plus dealer fees. If anything the electric will help level the pro factory bike advantage vs the privateer. Electric thanks to Elon has become mainstream and the public is seeing the benefits outweighs the negatives. Electric benefits the consumer.

We've heard all of this before. Stark hasn't released anything to the public yet. At this point they are just a marketing company. I don't see electric motorcycles being competitive with 450's in the next 10 years. Right now Stark claims this bike only gets 40 minutes of riding on a 1-2 hour recharge. That's not going to cut it for the average rider. Sure they claim 6 hours for "recreational riding" but I am guessing that is slow trail riding. And these are theoretical numbers which are rarely achieved. Talk is cheap. Prove it. At this point Start is just another hype train.

unsafe to have a Newby ride a 80hp bike that tops out super high speed with no safety like a clutch (I can definitely say I would have been seriously injured when I first start if that where the case but I always new just pull the clutch, whatever it took, and I'd be safe) what about all the smaller guys and girls riding 125s? they are gonna want a bike that's light. no body wants to ride 125 hp with a heavy bike. what does "any power you want mean" when the bike has no gears? how long is a battery gonna actually last topped out dessert, fast trails where electric is least efficient. what about in high heat or cold? Tesla batteries are known to not like heat or cold very much. and nobody is going to be impressed if people at a track are running generators to charge their bikes. noise and pollution would be moved from the track to the pits. there is definitely a place for them but there will also always be a place for ICE engines in dirtbikes. the real game changer is the suspension setup since you choose your weight when purchasing.

Apparently you can program it to have similar power to a 125 smoker or a 250 4 stroke or a 450 4 stroke. Now outside of a beginner riding trails I don't see the appeal of a bike that weighs a little less than a modern 450 but only has the power of a 125. I am excited for the future of the Stark and I would like to ride maybe even try racing one...once rules allow. If that ever does happen prior to a class being invented for AMA, GP, SX even local races. Stark would also be great for practice where there are sound regs.
