THE PRESENT TENSE
The indicative is the most common and frequent verbal mood. It's used to indicate a fact, an action or an idea that are real, certain and objective.
Let's discover together how to form the present tense!
First of all, let's see the present indicative of the verbs "essere" and "avere", the very first verbs to know when studying a language, also because they act as auxiliaries to form the compound tenses of other verbs (in this video you’ll find out in which cases we use the auxiliary "essere" and in which cases the auxiliary "avere": learnamo.com/e... )
ESSERE AVERE
Io sono
Tu sei
Lui/lei è
Noi siamo
Voi siete
Loro sono
Io ho
Tu hai
Lui/lei ha
Noi abbiamo
Voi avete
Loro hanno
Examples:
Loro sono Francesca e Giorgia, le mie amiche.
Carlo ha 34 anni mentre tu hai 45 anni.
What happens to other verbs? It depends on their ending in the infinitive! In Italian there are 3 different endings: -ARE, -ERE, -IRE. The present is formed by removing these endings of the infinitive and adding those of the present indicative.
Here are the endings of the present for the various groups of verbs:
Verbs in -RE Verbs in -ERE Verbs in -IRE (like "partire") Verbs in -IRE (like "finire")
-o
-i
-a
-iamo
-ate

-e

-iamo
-ite

-isce
-iamo

-iscono
Example of a regular verb in -ARE:
CANTARE
Io canto
Tu canti
Lui/lei canta
Noi cantiamo
Voi cantate
Loro cantano
Ex: Ogni anno molti cantanti famosi cantano a Sanremo.
Irregular verbs in -ARE:
ANDARE FARE DARE
Io vado
Tu vai
Lui/lei va
Noi andiamo
Voi andate
Loro vanno
Io faccio
Tu fai
Lui/lei fa
Noi facciamo
Voi fate
Loro fanno
Io do
Tu dai
Lui/lei dà
Noi diamo
Voi date
Loro danno
Ex:
Vanno in vacanza a Nizza ogni estate.
Faccio sempre un mega party per il mio compleanno.
Luisa dà sempre una mano ai suoi genitori in negozio.
Example of a regular verb in -ERE:
TO WRITE
Io scrivo
Tu scrivi
Lui/lei scrive
Noi scriviamo
Voi scrivete
Loro scrivono
Ex: Matteo scrive sempre delle poesie.
Irregular verbs in -ERE:
TENERE RIMANERE BERE
Io tengo

Lui/lei tiene
Noi teniamo
Voi tenete
Loro tengono
Io rimango
Tu rimani
Lui/lei rimane
Noi rimaniamo
Voi rimanete
Loro rimangono
Io bevo
Tu bevi
Lui/lei beve
Noi beviamo
Voi bevete
Loro bevono
Ex:
Tengo molto alla mia famiglia.
Quando fa freddo rimango sempre a casa.
Bevi acqua o vino stasera?
N.B. If the verb ends in -NERE, it will always follow the conjugation of "tenere", that is adding the g to the 1st singular person and the 3rd person plural!
What happens to verbs in -IRE? In the present indicative, verbs can follow the conjugation of the verb "partire" or that of the verb "finire":
PARTIRE FINIRE
Io parto
Tu parti
Lui/lei parte
Noi partiamo
Voi partite
Loro partono
Io finisco
Tu finisci
Lui/lei finisce
Noi finiamo
Voi finite
Loro finiscono
Ex:
Domani partite per il Giappone.
Quando finiscono i compiti, giocano.
But how do I know if a verb follows the conjugation of one or the other?
Unfortunately there isn’t a perfect rule, but only a "tendency" that is almost always right (even if there are some exceptions!!!).
Starting from the last letter of the verb in the infinitive, count to 5. The letter you stop on is...
A consonant? Then the verb tends to follow ththe conjugation of "partire"
A vowel? Then the verb tends to follow th conjugation of "finire"
Examples:
Dormire → io dormo… / Riempire → io riempio…
Sparire → io sparisco… / Preferire → io preferisco…
Dorme sempre dalle 23 alle 8, infatti è sempre riposato.
Preferiscono parlare di persona piuttosto che chattare sui social.
Irregular verbs in -IRE:
USCIRE VENIRE MORIRE DIRE
Io esco
Tu esci
Lui/lei esce
Noi usciamo
Voi uscite
Loro escono
Io vengo
Tu vieni
Lui/lei viene
Noi veniamo
Voi venite
Loro vengono
Io muoio
Tu muori
Lui/lei muore
Noi moriamo
Voi morite
Loro muoiono
Io dico
Tu dici
Lui/lei dice
Noi diciamo
Voi dite
Loro dicono
Ex:
I bambini escono da scuola alle 13.
Vengono sempre molti turisti in estate.
Purtroppo sempre più persone muoiono per il cancro.
MODAL VERBS
Finally, let's take a look at the Italian modal verbs! What are they? And how is their present indicative formed? Unfortunately they are very irregular (and very frequent in Italian!), So they must be learned by heart:
DOVERE POTERE VOLERE SAPERE
Io devo
Tu devi
Lui/lei deve
Noi dobbiamo
Voi dovete
Loro devono
Io posso
Tu puoi
Lui/lei può
