My dad got Lasse Viren's autograph. (In1980 in Lappeenranta where we lived) I was a kid and I was with him. Lasse Viren was really nice man.

1:46 My mom refuses to watch sports. And this is the reason she has given me 😂: I have been told by my mom that when she was a little kid, she sat on her mom's lap while they watched this from TV.. When Virén fell, my grandma jumped straight up standing in distress while my mom fell off her lap onto the floor... Ever since she hasn't watched any sports. 🤣

Finland has 25 Olympic gold medals in endurance running. Lasse Virén is the most recent winner and won four of them. 🥇🇫🇮

Funny story: "In the 5,000 meter final, Virén exhausted his competitors with a long sprint. He was able to keep the New Zealand runners behind him, known for their mile-like speed, and won his fourth Olympic gold with a time of 13:24.76. The very next day, Virén participated in the first marathon of his career. Doctors did not think Virén would be able to run the whole distance due to insufficient energy. During the run, Virén couldn't find his water bottle at the first refueling points, which taxed the energy reserves even more. Virén was still in the lead at 25 kilometers, but from then on he started to tire. In the end, he finished fifth, more than three minutes behind the winner with a time of 2:13:10.8."

In hindsight, Mäntyranta's achievements were not very fair, since his family had a unique blood mutation (all men in his family were tested to have had it) which gave him an insane advantage over normal humans. His normal hemoglobin was a staggering 220 g/L when normal men have an average of around 155 g/L. This value is crucial in endurance sports, since it affects how well your blood can transport oxygen. Values even remotely this high can normally only be achieved by illegal doping, but with Mäntyranta it was his genetic mutation that was tested to be family trait He and his family line has been researched a lot due to this outrageous mutation without it being lethal, usually values above 200g/L are considered to be lethally dangerous

Well, in upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, there can be many surprises, but I think that the most promising ones for Finnish medal candidates are these two women: Trap shooting: Noora Antikainen Pole vaulting : Wilma Murto Olympics are the toughest games of them all. There are multiple Italian world champion / olympic winner trap shooters against Finnish counterparts.(Italians are the best in trap shooting - no question about it - there are too many of them to even name them ). And there are also pretty tough Italian sisters against Finnish pole vaulters - namely Elisa MOLINAROLO and Roberta BRUNI. But we'll see :)

I once met Lasse Virén suddenly in an elevator in an office building in Helsinki. He immediately began to smalltalk to me like to an old friend which is very uncommon behavior for Finns. Very nice and warm person.

You start, you fall, you get up, you beat everybody in the race - and not only that - you beat everybody in the whole world. You make a new world record. Try to beat that.
