The subjunctive is the mood of subjectivity: it allows expressing opinions, doubts, moods, desires and everything concerning the inner world.
Italian has 4 tenses: present, past, imperfect and past perfect.
Let's see the subjunctive imperfect of the verbs "essere" and "avere", which are fundamental because they act as auxiliaries to form the compound tenses of all other verbs.
ESSERE
Che io fossi
Che tu fossi
Che lui/lei fosse
Che noi fossimo
Che voi foste
Che loro fossero
AVERE
Che io avessi
Che tu avessi
Che lui/lei avesse
Che noi avessimo
Che voi aveste
Che loro avessero
N.B. → the imperfect subjunctive is characterized by the two s (-ss-)!
What happens to other verbs? Just remove their endings in the infinitive (-ARE, -ERE, -IRE) and add those of the subjunctive imperfect.
Here are the endings of the subjunctive imperfect for the various groups of verbs:
Verbs in -ARE; Verbs in -ERE; Verbs in -IRE;
-assi
-assi
-asse
-assimo
-aste
-assero
-essi
-essi
-esse
-essimo
-este
-essero
-issi
-issi
-isse
-issimo
-iste
-issero
We can see that, unlike the subjunctive present, in the subjunctive imperfect of verbs in -IRE there is no distinction between the conjugation of verbs like "partire" and that of verbs like "finire": the endings are the same.
PARLARE CORRERE FINIRE
Che io parlassi
Che tu parlassi
Che lui/lei parlasse
Che noi parlassimo
Che voi parlaste
Che loro parlassero
Che io corressi
Che tu corressi
Che lui/lei corresse
Che noi corressimo
Che voi correste
Che loro corressero
Che io finissi
Che tu finissi
Che lui/lei finisse
Che noi finissimo
Che voi finiste
Che loro finissero
Irregular verbs (for root and/or endings) the following verbs in -ARE:
FARE STARE DARE
Che io facessi
Che tu facessi
Che lui/lei facesse
Che noi facessimo
Che voi faceste
Che loro facessero
Che io stessi
Che tu stessi
Che lui/lei stesse
Che noi stessimo
Che voi steste
Che loro stessero
Che io dessi
Che tu dessi
Che lui/lei desse
Che noi dessimo
Che voi deste
Che loro dessero
Note that these verbs take the endings in -e (-essi, -esse...) instead of -assi, -asse...
The following verbs in -ERE and -IRE remain irregular (for root and/or endings):
BERE DIRE
Che io bevessi
Che tu bevessi
Che lui/lei bevesse
Che noi bevessimo
Che voi beveste
Che loro bevessero
Che io dicessi
Che tu dicessi
Che lui/lei dicesse
Che noi dicessimo
Che voi diceste
Che loro dicessero
Note that the verb "dire" takes the endings in -e (-essi, -esse...) instead of -issi, -isse...
MODAL VERBS
Finally, let's have a look at the Italian modal verbs in the subjunctive imperfect. Even their conjugation becomes regular in this verbal tense:
DOVERE POTERE VOLERE SAPERE
Che io dovessi
Che tu dovessi
Che lui/lei dovesse
Che noi dovessimo
Che voi doveste
Che loro dovessero
Che io potessi
Che tu potessi
Che lui/lei potesse
Che noi potessimo
Che voi poteste
Che loro potessero
Che io volessi
Che tu volessi
Che lui/lei volesse
Che noi volessimo
Che voi voleste
Che loro volessero
Che io sapessi
Che tu sapessi
Che lui/lei sapesse
Che noi sapessimo
Che voi sapeste
Che loro sapessero
THE SUBJUNCTIVE PAST PERFECT
The subjunctive past perfect is formed as follows:
Subjunctive imperfect of the auxiliary (essere or avere) + Past participle of the verb
First of all, let's see the subjunctive past perfect of the two auxiliaries!
ESSERE AVERE
Che io fossi stato/a
Che tu fossi stato/a
Che lui/lei fosse stato/a
Che noi fossimo stati/e
Che voi foste stati/e
Che loro fossero stati/e
Che io avessi avuto
Che tu avessi avuto
Che lui/lei avesse avuto
Che noi avessimo avuto
Che voi aveste avuto
Che loro avessero avuto
ATTENTION: Always remember that in Italian, each auxiliary uses itself to form compound tenses (essere is the auxiliary of essere, avere is the auxiliary avere); when you use the auxiliary "essere", the past participle must agree to the gender and number of the subject!
