As a Chilean I have to say that the Italians before the match declared how horrible Chile was so they started to heat up the mood, people were mad at them and the day of the match Italy CLEARLY just came in to throw kicks and for sure they tried to injury the Chilean star Leonel Sanchez (who ended up being one of the top scorers of the world cup, scoring the insane free kick goal against Lev Yachin). Italians didn't even try to score at all!, after they were losing they kept kicking anything that moved!. Also both Chilean goals were totally legit and well played, the second was an awesome shot also. Anyway, that's how Italy plays until today, but just more dissimulated. Later Chile played against them in France 98 and the referee gave them a penalty because they were losing and ended up 2-2 🧐

I encourage folks to watch the whole match or atleast the beginning, abvailable here on youtube. The Italians were absolutely the provocateurs in this match from the very beginning. I think they thought it was the only way they could win because the Chileans were clearly superior, technically speaking. Still, it was disgusting, especially the way the Italian players refused to accept the penalties and were literally trying to intimidate the ref at every turn, who was a BIG man, thank goodness. It's no wonder he was favoring the Chileans. I would have too.

rusty shekelford Games are still filmed and shown with far away shots so you can see the playing field action. With this video, I could see a number of dives; they’re nothing new to the sport, as you know. A player points to downfield, an opposing team member standing at the guy’s shoulder grabs his face like he’s been poked in the eye - dive. A guy raises his knee, opposing team member who’s steps away grabs his groin, no contact made - dive. Appreciate your input, though.

the commentator, David Coleman, didn't even get the name of the Italian player who got punched with the left hook correct. Was Maschio, not David.

I can already imagine players like Cristano and Messi in this game, wouldn't last 2 minutes on the pitch with how delicate they are

You know watching these old clips like this makes me wonder what it was like living in a time where the world was black and white. What it would’ve been like living without any color.

Sportsmanship isn't what it was in those days. They might kick your bollocks off for 90 minutes, but at least they'd help you look for them at the end of the game :-) Nice to see David "Colemanballs" Coleman pontificating at the start. He was well-known for talking crap, but in this case he was pretty accurate.

It’s funny watching this all those years later but l grew up watching the game in England in the 1970s when thuggery was considered part of the game. Every team had someone who specialized in crippling the most talented players in the opposition. Skillful players were ridiculed by managers as ‘Fanny merchants’. No surprise then that the violence on the pitch was echoed in the stands. Horrible, horrible times

The one and only time that a referee directed two consecutive games of the Host Nation! Strange how Cile that punched two times Italian players didn't get any red card while two Italian players were send-off and Maschio played with fractured nose until the end as no substitution were allowed.
