I chose not to buy oil lanterns and wicks but bought extra solar yard lights. They can be brought inside in the evening all night and will light up each room very bright. Safer then oil. I experimented with them in the kitchen and they were very bright. Just a tip.

A tip for water. Last year for the first time we were restricted on how much water we could use and we were not allowed to use the hose to water our garden. So, anytime we were warming up water (at the sink to wash our hands or dishes, or in the shower) I caught that cold water in a 5 gallon bucket so it wouldn't just go down the drain. Last year I used it to water my garden. This year I'm looking to get a drum I can store it in. I'm paying for that water anyway, why should I just let it go down the drain?

Was told it does not hurt the plants, it’s hard to carry out that much water, so thinking about putting a clean soft hose one end on speak it out side other end in tub turn on water outside tell it funds in tub , turn it off . Take it off and it should drain the tub out side. Hope it works. Also have 3 gal bucket to use to flush the toilet.

You're rocking it Colby! The Lord put all these things and more on my heart over 15 years ago. Wooden matches can be waterproofed by dipping in paraffin wax or a melted candle. Also helps to keep them in a plastic bag. I use pinecones as fire starters all the time. If you live in the city it's really hard to find firewood, so an inexpensive Coleman propane stove or a propane grill to cook, or a charcoal grill works too. There is also the hobo stove using a tin can with holes punched around top and bottom. The bigger, the better. I use a 5 gallon bucket w/ a potty seat on it. Again, in the city, plastic trash bags taped into the bowl of the toilet can be taken outside when full. Good for children especially. I always have my Bible too to remind me of his promises of healing, protection, and provision. Texas Deb ❤️

Colby, to add to your "fire starter" section...we save dryer lint/sheets, old candles and paper egg cartons. Fill the cartons with lint, melt the wax and pour over the lint. If we've done any wood working, we'll also save sawdust and add that. Once the wax is cool, break the cartons apart. They will light easily and stay burning long enough for kindling to catch. Just store them in a ziploc. We also take cotton balls/makeup pads and pour wax on them. They don't last quite as long, but are light enough that one could carry hundreds (in a bugout) without feeling much weight. For all of the Scentsy type warmers, when you go to change out the wax, don't pour the old out, wipe it with a cotton pad. Boom, instant fire starter!

You can make wicks for your lantern if they are unavailable. Start with cotton cloth in a square or rectangle. Fold on itself till you have a multi layered wick size that will feed thru your burner feeder. You need to sew through it several times with machine or by hand. I showed him how to play “I Spy” with the dirt, lint and other items on the floor that needed to be vacuumed or pick up and put away. He had it down after the second time when I did a walk though with him saying “I spy …” with each thing I saw that he missed. My 96 year old female neighbor now lives with me permanently. I’ve been taking care of her for the last 5 years. I don’t have an option to bug out now. It’s ok. I have 3 buildings on the property and two are metal buildings. I have a River below the house if I get desperate. Otherwise I have 500 gallons in my hot tub and a 400 gallon storage tank. I have 4 plus years of food in the basement that is secured as safely as possible and all in a variety of dehydration, freeze dried, and canned. I’ve spent the last 2 years stocking up on firewood and I’m pretty sure I have 3 cords. I just had a dried cedar dropped and the limbs and branches will get collected next week for kindling. It was so dry I’ve already started burning the cord. I have about 5 or 6 ways to cook in any situation. I just put 300 feet of fencing around the most vulnerable areas of my house. It’s 1.62 acres and where the house is, is the only real accessible area as I’m in the mountains. I’ll be putting boobytraps throughout the first area. Nothing serious, but will let whomever know that I now know you’re there. Lastly I’m always armed if I’m outside at night. Between bears and lions, I am always ready. And I have Jesus. He’s the one that told me to prepare for something bad coming in June 2019. I got ready fast. Solar generator and everything else. Being prepared takes the pain and the fright factor out of the situation. I am lucky to have moved in 2020 to be in this housing situation. God is good. Listen to Him and pray for wisdom.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Butcher gloves, axe, knives, top quality clothing because I won't be able to take much, rain poncho heavy duty for many uses, water purifier straw, how will I pack my Alexa? 😜 The list can go on forever, the homeless will not feel this as much and are a wealth of knowledge I bet. I received my tent today. Im so excited to pop it up tomorrow. Its a 1 woman tent that takes very little effort to put up. Have a make shift toilet with everything i need go keep clean and well packed inside. Have water, purification, lifestraw, and a filtered model that can hold 5 gallons at a time. I have several lights options. Food and a way to cook. A way to heat. I love your videos and ideas. So i went and bought the plastic black outdoor trash cans with wheels to store kindling, wood, pinecones in to keep dry. I feel pretty good as of now.

I went old and new school with lighters. I got a large stockpile of zippo lighters, a ton of fluid, flints and wick. I also have refillable butane lighters (a few of which are the dental torch type) with 120 12 oz cans of 11x refined butane. Lastly, I got the USB charged "windproof" lighters with a few different solar charging options. That is all in addition to a large amount of flint strike fire starters. I made a bunch of cotton ball/petroleum jelly fire starters super inexpensively and easily. I got a few large bags of cotton balls, the jumbo size generic Vaseline and just worked a good amount of the petroleum jelly into each cotton ball and sealed 50 in each pack. The vac sealed bags are the most expensive part of that project. I did the same with light. I got quite a few solar lanterns, flood lights, etc. I'm an Olight fan myself and I have several WML's with extra batteries and USB charging cords, not that I've needed to change a battery in 3 years of daily use. That makes me very confident with my handheld and WM lighting. I did get old time oil lanterns and fuel that was safe for sustained indoor use and a large amount of oil and wick for them. The oil I found at the best price with really good reviews was lavender scented. I was kind of hesitant but when I tested it out on a camping trip, I was surprised that it didn't bother me like my girl's Yankee Candles do. Not overpowering but pleasantly scented. That's my two cents. I just came across your channel for the first time today. I liked your gardening, the way you are humble and friendly in your video. You earned a subscriber tonight. God bless you folks, I think we're doing the best we know how to in each of our cases. I only wish I could open more eyes but there are those that are determined to stay shut. I take a claw hammer. It great for dropping stakes as well as pulling out. Good weight for throwing rope over a tall branch for food above bear height. Also good for ripping wood apart to make kindling out of a block. And is useful to move hot pans around on the fire and keeping hands clear. ( short of potholders. Claw did just fine) And pushing logs back into fire or raking coals under the Dutch oven.

A lot of people talk about bugging out as if it's a camping trip. One thing you need to know about bugging out is there is a lot of land out there and there is a lot of land that is owned by people so don't think that you can just walk into a land and take it over and put your bug out Camp there because you might be up for a rude awakening. A lot of landowners will shoot first and ask questions later. So do not disrespect the land that you're intending to enter without knowing who it belongs to or if it belongs to anyone you just don't want to create a worse situation than what you're going to be in. When people start bugging out it's going to be in Mass. I recommend bugging in until you no longer have a choice but to bug out and when that occurs you know that it's not just you going to be bugging out. That means something really bad like a war or something is coming our way and you cannot stay put no matter what but you got to go and be on the move... If you're in the city most apartment do not have space to collect a lot of water so what I recommend is a sawyer Mini order LifeStraw or one of the new Sawyer straws that actually eliminate toxins and those are a little more expensive but they're worth it. Another thing I would recommend is a four-way water key and know how to use it and where you can gather water around the city or the suburb. Google it now will you have the opportunity to do so because you can get water from many sources that you got to think outside the box. I appreciate this young man what he saying but a lot of what he's saying is malarkey. If you're bugging in that's one scenario and it also depends on where and the United States your bugging in if it's a City versus the suburb versus major country and population has a lot to do with it so do your research now while you still can

Better: have a bug out place with some supplies, if you can afford it. For us, bugging out in the wilderness is the last resort. We got another house in a thinly-populated area, but it's quite far, so we have to make sure that the car gas tank is always full.

Was without power for 10 weeks when hurricane Katrina hit...not fun. I always hear people talk about bug out bags, which are a necessity, but what about a walking staff made of PVC pipe with caps on each end. One end (ground side) could have a nail inserted which could make a spear for small animals/fish. The other end could have a removable cap and the pipe could be used for storing packets of salt, pepper, spices, instant coffee, sugar, bandages, cording, etc.......just a thought....

Love your list of essentials - and I would add bicycles to it. With diesel and oil prices rocketing, running a car or van is going to get really prohibitively expensive very soon indeed. Just this week we have got bicycles for all but 2 family members (there are 7 of us) plus panniers so that when shopping with the car becomes impossible, we can cycle to the shops for free and fill our bags - all good exercise too!

For communication, the Air Force gives pilots a small credit card sized mirror with a space in the center where the silver has been removed so you can see through that little hole in the center that is how someone who is stranded can reflect the light onto an airplane flying over or signal distant friendlies easily. You could use this to communicate with your family. You know that you are actually reflecting the sun directly at them not just randomly, by looking through that little hole in the center. You can get these at military surplus stores, and they are nice heavy duty mirrors. Or you can make your own out of a small piece of mirror from a makeup compact.

Not sure it's safe to run a propane grill inside your home. Propane doesn't flow real well below 32 degrees so don't leave the bottle out in the cold. Carbon monoxide alarm is a must if you cook inside with fuels. If you feel sleepy or headaches you need to get out of the house rapidly.

I wouldn't leave them, so unless we're only gone for a couple days, we are here to stay. Everything you said makes sense, but for the 2nd most important thing. Our power went out twice in the past week. Both times for over 24hrs. We're in FL and have a 1-year-old so we were pretty aggravated with it. Mainly because there's no need for it. We're paying customers, and for the rates that they charge us they have no business shutting our power off. Especially when it's 97° outside and gets up to 105° inside our house. That's highly unsafe for some people, especially babies.

Knew the heat was too much for the new baby. Advised them to go ahead and invest in a generator big enough to power their new home and central air system. First few hurricane outages we went through were rough. And we thought we could handle it. Nope..... Everyone was cranky by day four with no power. Plus the generator pays for itself after awhile of not losing everything in your fridge and the buying of ice for coolers, flashlight batteries, etc. Love, love, love that generator. Hubby keeps it well maintained so it's always ready when/if needed.

Just a tip for firewood, while this may not be possible for everyone, my parents who live in a rural area burn wood for heat during winter, they always collect their firewood during the winter for next year, so they are always burning last year's firewood, this gives the wood time to dry and will burn easier then trying to burn freshly cut wood.

Just finished going through the derecho that hit Ohio. The solar drive/path way lights were amazing to have while we were without power. Instead of pulling the entire unit inside, I just popped the top portion off and place them ontop of water jugs or jars to increase the light. We had a fully lit house all the way through the night. The biggest struggles we faced were with humidity. It was insufferable with the heat wave that followed. We had a heat index of 110-115 multiple days in a row. Our food storage and seeds are in the basement, but even the basement went up to 84°with high humidity. understanding the dangers of wet bulb effect on the human body are now something I understand and Is a new focal point of our preparedness journey. We had multiple ways to cook food but never really did because of the heat, I was so grateful to have recently harvested "food on demand" for salads, snacks, oatmeal toppings etc. Plus a pantry packed with a variety of quick grab foods that were nutrient dense but did not require cooking. Once the heat wave passed,I was finally able to cook. This was a fantastic but not so fun test of our ability to handle a short term in-place off grid scenario. We are getting a break in temp for the weekend but the heat wave returns and we face another brutal week with no AC(damaged in the storm)and high humidity again. Even if we did have AC, several power companies are shutting off electric even with these insane conditions because of the "strain on the grid".
@TheMacs1

O my gracious. We definitely understand the humidity. We have the same issues here on the Deep South, which is why we can't even have basement- such a potential for mold/mildew foe the high humidity. The time or what most of us have known as normal, is gone. We must learn how to adapt to living the way our ancestors did or the very best we can. Thanks for sharing your experience

That was something else! At least for us living in SE Ohio. We are used to a few days in the 80s but the high humidity was almost overpowering. Thank GOD it was only 4 days. I understand AEP "turning of the electric" for awhile. But this is something that they should have been preparing for years ago. They KNOW our power grid is old & needs added to. Everyone knows if you have a large family you need more provisions. So with thousands of people coming to Ohio, being born etc AEP should have be READY to provide for their customers. You do not keep one or two family members from eating because of limited food, you get prepared for them ahead. I hear people saying this is a form of the government being able to control us. Maybe, maybe not. But we know that day is FAST approaching. GOD BLESS US ALL

Free-dumb Fighter, same situation here in Pittsburgh. We have a very large “close” family. We have been told by several family members that we shouldn’t bring it up anymore because everyone is uncomfortable around us. We don’t want to lose our family, so we don’t say much anymore, which makes us feel that by not doing everything we can to convince them, we are hurting them. A no win situation. I just had surgery and will be off work for a few months so my plan is to invite them to our place (individually…one on one) and ask them to help me can meat and tend to my very small garden. Hopefully they will learn something and possibly get inspired. I don’t know what else to do!

I would add a broccoli sprouting system. Super Duper food. No dirt needed , No sunlight needed till the day before harvest and only 3-5 days to grow and the only draw back is a bit expensive for the seed but the nutrition value is stellar so I am ok with the price from a pepper standpoint.Actually if the weather is too bad and the growing season fails it is priceless.Your channel is good. Wal mart- in camping section get a keychain "Magnesium" fire starter. Has the magnesium you shave off with a blade and striker on the side you use for spark. Those things last forever! I've started hundreds of fires on one piece, and it's still over half remaining. Start in wet environment, burns thousands of degrees (F) small, easy to use and only costs a couple of dollars. Also great to practice with. Thanks for the info sir.

Slice a pool noodle down the middle, lengthwise. Put a heavy duty trash bag into a 5 gal bucket and secure it on top with the pool noodle wrapped around the perimeter of the bucket, which serves as your toilet seat. Have old fashioned, clay cat litter ($Tree) by the bucket with a big doggie scooper ($Tree). After doing your business put a scoop on top then put the bucket lid on top of noodle.

You can start a fire with a magnifying glass also. Have solar lights. Charge during the day - light the interiors at night. You also need to know how to build a smokeless fire. I also have a rain barrel and got an above ground pool (10'x30") to be my water retention pool for use of a sponge bath, wash clothes, wash dishes etc. Not for drinking. Water would come from the pool and put in a separate wash tub. I also have a solar shower set-up. I did a lot of camping with 4 children. I have everything needed.

I have almost all of the things you’ve mentioned and I’m feeling much better about it than I was a few months ago. I am a seasoned camper and so a lot of my gear I’ve already had a while because we tent camp, bringing all of our food, water, cooler, firewood and fire starter materials. I would really recommend to folks that not only do you need to get all the gear, you need to get out there and actually use everything! Also, I want to add one thing that I haven’t heard anyone talk about yet and that is a large rolling cart or big wagon will be an essential item, especially when bugging out! Imagine that there’s no longer a way to run your car (if you have one) and you still need a way to move all your gear, what are you going to do? I have one cart that I use to bring groceries and stuff inside my home but I do realize that I desperately need a really big wagon or even two of them….if shtf, the cars not running and there’s no gas, etc I’ve got to be able to get to where my family and I need to get to! Essential item!

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but came in handy while trail riding in the fall when I was younger, I needed to build a fire and only had my flint and striker on my keys. My problem was everything around me had been soaked the day before, I reverted to what I came with to start the fire…my horse blanket; some cotton fill out of my vest and a few pine cones which turned into a wonderful campfire. Maybe this could help someone?!

@@TheMacs1 Thank you. I just bought more of these flint and strikers on Amazon last Christmas for our friends and family, I believe this is a must have. Question: I know how to hunt and fish, but many don’t seem to know how to utilize their entire game, are you going to cover this also? I like bow hunting and can skin scrap hide down to tan over open fire with brains. I have done fly fishing along with making flies from butchered rooster/hens, maybe others can put your view of these to good use. If you have helpful tips for handicap persons which may help, I’m all ears! Take care!

The antique oil lamps are my favorite because they are able to be turned up or down so the light is adjustable which is so nice . You can find them for two bucks literally at every single thrift store I have ever been to every time . They are not good for moving around because it's problematic with fire hazard but for light in your home or shelter is nice because they last so long and they look the best too ! Can't dismiss the little things !

When I was a teenager we lost power for 2 weeks. I didn’t have a problem not having power, but the rest of my family acted like it was the end of the world 😂 the only thing I needed was music so it worked out great for me since I always kept batteries in my alarm clock so I was all set. Now as an adult I have my whole household prepared and prepped. My only concern is we have harsh and long winters so heating is my biggest concern. I’m only prepared to go a month or two without heat unfortunately (cold weather here is about 8-7 months maybe more it depends on the Great Lakes 😭)

Urban people, you can cut off your water supply line in to the house to isolate it from the system and use your hot water tanks for 40 to 60 gal. Hook a hose to the tank drain and you can refill smaller bottles.

Have an old Kleenex box in my laundry room. I just drop the dryer lint in it. When you have a box full, fill toilet paper or paper towel cardboard tubes full and stick in a ziploc bag. They make fantastic fire starters and it’s free!! For a portable toilet, hit the thrift stores!! They always have handicap toilet seats elderly/disabled people use. Simply line the bowel with a plastic bag, toss in some kitty litter or horse pellets. Just tie up and dispose of afterwards.

Great info ...been keeping up on this. Sadly I am on a fixed income. But I am a Christian too. We are so close the End. I'm on an acre which about half could be used for farming as it is County and goes back to the 700's and part of a 1600 acre tract owned by General Dupree. (WOW never knew until a neighbor told me over 20 yrs ago. I've been here since 1997. Being near a famous river, lots of fishing meets take place here mostly Bass. Making a worm farm on part of it would bring in income and help when those fishermen come. Plus they help a garden ! Thinking. God bless

I was without power for 2 weeks straight after a hurricane and the heat was unbearable. There was no breeze most of the time. So I put on my bathing suit with a blouse over that, and got soaking wet in a cold shower every few hours and just dripped until I needed another wetting down. That helped me get through those long hot days with no fan or air conditioning. The nights were hot but more bearable. As long as you have shower water, you can stay safely cool.

If someone doesn't have a poncho, one can be made out of a garbage bag. From what I saw, a solar generator takes a long time to charge up, and a much shorter time to run it down, if used. The solar generator can hold it's charge between 1 and 5 days, if you don't use it, depending on the generator, and then you'll need to charge it back up.

Don’t wait until you are in a crisis to learn how to do things to keep you alive. Practice making a fire in all conditions. With different methods. Start with a good day and easy methods but work up to when it’s wet out when it’s snowing, when it’s windy etc. make a Dakota fire pit. Two wholes connect one for fire other to get oxygen to the fire. This can help if you do have to be outside and not want anyone to find you. Learn to grow food and preserve it. Find water sources near you. Collect rain water. Grow medicinal herbs. People think I know ow how to do these things…. I don’t need to practice. But knowing and doing are completely different. Especially when things are not ideal.
