That 3A was one of the best I have seen her do! Absolutely ginormous... Wow. Also, the judges used to beat her up on her artistry, but, now I watch her stake, I feel as though the beauty of her basic skills and her genuine joy of skating alone would be far superior to most of the skaters who were known to be artistic back then.
this was the very 1st triple axel done a woman in international competition. And it is one of Midori's best.

We worry about underrotations in skating nowadays, but you never did with Midori. The height & distance on her jumps is mind boggling. And I loved her artistry. She had energy, spark & joy to her skating. Along with powerhouse jumps😅

That 3A deserves the highest GOE. The height and distance she gets are insane.
There have been many triple axels since Midori but none (women) have matched her sheer power and execution and doubt if anyone (women) ever will.

@@frankiefelinesalwayswelcom5825Tonya's were inconsistent & I always worried about her landings. You really didn't have to worry about that with Midori. Her jumps were rock solid.

Always love coming back to Midori Ito videos. Her joy on the ice - her speed and wow - her jumps - she was and is still, amazing. Great athlete, great skater, great person

She has so many great ones, it is hard to pick out the best one. In any ranking of triple axels I have ever seen on the internet, her triple axel is always ranked #1 over the other 7 women (as of April 26, 2018) who have landed, with Midori, triple axels in international competition.
How good was this triple axel by Midori? I found the following commentary prepared by some one who analised her triple axel by how many frames it took to record it. "Midori Ito's 3A at 1988 NHK was 23 frames long in the air from a 30 frames per second video. This means her 3A was at least 72 cm. Her toe pick doesn't completely hit the ice on frame 23, so this 3A could actually be 75 cm if I could verify it with 60 fps video." "This is definitely the highest ladies jump ever and it's overall one of the highest triple axels and highest jumps ever. The only jumps I've measured with more frames in the air so far are Yagudin 3A, Candeloro 3A, Boyang Jin 4Lz, and Kolyada 4Lz." When it comes to ladies triple axels, there is Midori and then there is everyone else. No one is in her league.

Her triple axels were ridiculous in terms of height, speed & distance. She still has the best triple axel, bar none. And the first woman to have a complete set of triples.
So the great Midori Ito first landed the triple axel in competition here, at the 1988 NHK. Why is this not the feat mentioned but rather her completing it at 89 World's??

You're right here she made history but for landing the first 3A in an international competition, in worlds 89 was the first time in the history of world championships, and 92 was the first time in history of the Olympics and if she hadn't done that the Olympics record would be Mao's.

@nondescriptnyc I agree I think that has got to be the highest 3Axel I've seen here do. It's just soooo freaking amazing. I guess one of the challenges she had to deal with was due to the height and power of her jumps, he landing ankle/foot had to endure extra beating. To temper all that power coming out of the jumps. We will never see a female jumper who makes jumps look easy, powerful, and towering as Midori can.

Okay - HUGE PROPS for that triple axel. I have a question: Why does she seem to have two different techniques where her non jumping foot is not tight on her doubles but on her triples they are very close to her body? I would think having two different jump techniques would lead to inconsistency. Again, that 3A is amazing!

She got so much height and distance on her jumps, she didn't need to rotate as quickly as other skaters, hence the wrapped leg.

Is an unusual 2Lo not 3Lo a kind of flaw? 2:13 Absolutely Not! Because she was attempting to add the another entry Ina Bauer following the spread eagle just before a jump-such entries into a jump was apparently much more difficult. I believe.

I thought she attempted to do 3Lo and ended up with 2Lo, but your comment reminded me that she had rotated very slowly and widely from the very beginning here. Normal human beings do eagle to 2A, while Midori does outside eagle into ina bauer to 2Lo. But still I want to bet for 3Lo, because it's Midori🤣 She was apparently tired after the huge 3Lz, 3A, and 3F. .. you could see it from her shaky spiral, but energetic enough in steps and 3T-3T in the last minute. Just unbelievable.
