Looks great! Nice introduction. One of the things that I have noticed in KUIU Storm Star reviews is how little the outer flaps around in the wind once properly lined out. The Nortent polycotton Vern 1 is also very quiet. That is very important to me as I can endure almost any conditions as long as I can get a good night's sleep. Thanks for sharing your initial thoughts on this Dave and giving us a first look. This looks like a really compelling option for those who aspire to a Soulo but maybe can’t justify the price. On the other hand those who need something abit larger than a Soulo but don’t want to step up to an Allak. Not all poles are created equal however and we do think the lack of DAC poles mean it probably won’t be able to take on those very extreme conditions Hille’s stand up to, but for 99% of people that isn’t a concern. Absolute masterstroke by Nortent with this one. All the best - BR

@Fellmandave1 I greatly appreciate the thorough review, especially showing pads with measurements as they help visualize for taller people as "tall" is too relative a descriptor (some would say 6'1" is tall, while others not). Giving sleeping pad dimensions gives a better frame of reference. Quick clarifying question re: length. At 17:42, you show the rectangular wide NXT at 183cm x 64 cm (72" x 25"), which appears to just fit as the outside corner of the pad touches where the inner tent angles in to the end (leaving what you describe as a good handwidth of space remaining on each end). At 19:00 you show the regular mummy Ether Light Extreme 183cm x 55 cm (72" x 21.5") and then the NeoAir 183cm x 51cm, which both have a little more play as they are narrower (and rounded edges for the mummy version). Many companies are using 72" (183cm) long sleeping pads as their standard length and also offering "large" versions that are typically 78" or 79" long (198 or 201cm) e.g. Ether Light Large Rectangular (79" x 25"). Based on this first look, it appears that the longer 78" "large" pads would be too long to fit inside this tent, especially at the 25" width. Can you confirm that a sleeping pad longer than 72" would be too long to fit in this tent? I have serious concerns about Nortent's functional use for tall people. For example, I am 6'9" (206 cm) tall, so use a 79" x 25" sleeping pad. While this tent appears to be great, it also appears that it is too short/small for tall people. Thanks and keep up the excellent reviews!

Hi Dave. Good first look at this tent. It certainly looks well thought out and seems like it will be very strong in adverse weather. Price point also attractive. Only negative on first impressions is the weight. At 2.9kg with the footprint this is only 200g shy of the likes of a Hilleberg Jannu. Setting price aside (easy to say), for me it’s just too heavy for what it offers. Maybe I will change my mind when it’s put through its paces in the field….cheers.

I believe the extra space that the Kuiu Storm Star 2p offers would be more beneficial for my needs, but I do like the features the Vern 1 offers. Hi Mike, for one person use, get the Vern, much more versatile. The doors and exit on the SS are very low and porthole like. Great in storms etc but not good for letting nature in. Personally I don’t like porthole doors. As can be seen from the solid bits alongside, the view out is compromised. The loss of the second rain cover looks like a cost saver by Nortent. It looks an interesting design. I note though that the ceiling is actually the same as the Soulo - 95cm. But Nortent’s dimensions are a bit longer than Dave’s measurements. If wanting to put it up against a Soulo then I suppose the field test is where to compare.
@Fellmandave1
7 ай бұрын
To be honest Nortents diagrams are not the best and the difference between inner and outer is hard to tell. My measurements could have been better too as it was not really stretched out and pitched. I agree that much field testing is needed . I thought the porthole was OK though and having the double outer doors enables a much bigger view than a bigger inner door and a single outer door if you get my meaning. Thanks for adding to the debate!

Looks like a well made, well designed tent. 👍 I have one question for you though, what feature would convince me to buy this model over other much cheaper options which have similar features? I live in the UK where lets be honest our climate is fairly tame 99% of the time and in 54 years of hiking/wild camping I've never had a major tent failure. I have camped in Finland, Sweden and British Columbia but even then didn't use a tent of this price. Is it worth almost £600? @@Fellmandave1 This is not a complex circumstance. The rear end of the tent is prone to fattening from downward air pressure due to the pole structure and the guy lines can’t help that much as designed. Thicker poles will help some but they cant completely defeat the geometry of the current design. So it’s not for me unless they make a design change to the pole structure. However, this tent looks like it’s made well with high quality materials and is perfectly fine if not exposed to winds that it can’t handle. However, it is clear to me that there are tents in it’s price range that do a much better job with wind at about the same weight or less. Cheers!

I guess it's all down to what an individual defines as bad weather. But this tent is not four seasons and far too heavy and expensive to justify its capabilities as things stand.

Did you have to sign a contract on what you had to talk about RE this tent?

No, entirely up to me. I like tents, especially good ones, I get enthusiastic.

4 Season but only in Nordic conditions ! Snow loading and high winds. A 3000HH head is not enough, after a good few outings in UK winter with driving rain it will be water logged.

Personally I would absolutely hate to try to raise this tent in adverse weather. My Hileberg Akto is a perfect 4 season tent made for the worst of conditions. Takes barely a minute to get up and is safe in the toughest of conditions possible. No running around trying to get the poles into all pockets and the clips to click at the correct places. The weight aspect is also a big plus with Akto. What many seem to forget is that there is not one tent for all situations. There is a huge difference to pack and pitch a tent in the mountains compared to pack a kayak for a tour among bare rock islands in the Swedish archipelago or a base camp in Himalaya. And many seem to think that a new version each season is a must for a tent brand. For winter camping I would definitely pack a larger tent but with that comes a penalty in weight and pack volume. I understand that price is always an aspect but the cost for a more expensive tent can easily be carried over a number of years and also compared to how much a few nights in a hotel would cost.

Hi, thanks for the comment. The pitching method is very simiar to many hillebergs and one that works well in adverse weather.
