I always remember the caterpillar and the funny noise, but not much else abut the programme.

Before the caterpillar in the earlier series there was a whale.

I vaguely remember the whale, but I haven't seen any clips with it on KZitem.

Yes, it looks to be an episode of Let's Pretend called The Witch And The Sweeper that was broadcast on that date.

One of the " pretenders ", not featured in this clip also appeared at the same time in Crossroads, I seem to remember. ( Male )

Can't believe they axed the entertaining Pipkins (before my time) for this dreary rubbish. As a young child I thought it was drop-dead dull as ditchwater, with presenters who were completely unengaging and rarely even acknowledged the viewer. And don't get me started on that bloody annoying caterpillar at the beginning of each programme... I found Play School and even the "desperately trying to be modern" Playbus/Playdays on the BBC to be similarly boring. I was a Rainbow kid all the way, that was always fun! And The Sooty Show of course, but that was aimed at slightly older than pre-school.

Let's Pretend seemed to be so low budget that it looked as if it was made by Border rather than Central - no Zippy or Mooncat-alike puppets, just a blank studio. I bet that the real titan of Equity members, Chris Hazell, was probably paid a pittance for his stints on that programme compared to how much Thames probably paid Geoffrey Hayes, or Yorkshire paid Beryl Reid and Stephen Boxer for more or less the same job. Central's own regional newsreaders were a lot more famous then the "pretenders" on that programme.

Today, Chris Hazell (if it is the same fellow) is better known in brass banding circles for the light concert piece 'Three Brass Cats'. The most famous one of the pieces, 'Mr Jums', is a favourite among youth bands and adult brass bands from Section 2 to 4. Not a bad little concert piece either.

The programme itself was a 'pretender' to Pipkins' crown! Cheap and insufferingly boring... Nigel Plaskitt has tried to revive Pipkins but unfortunately it can't happen because nobody knows who owns the rights.

I had Major Morgan! I wasn't allowed sticklebricks as my mum thought they would stick in the carpet🤔. I hated Let's Pretend and just found it boring.

@@zetametallic Oh, well that is understandable, it would hurt your foot unless you put it away afterwards, I understand why your mother would worry about treading on it.
