You know, as much as I love Zukerman’s solo playing, I looooove his ensemble playing better. It really showcases his sensitive articulation and phrasing, especially the soft, delicate articulation at the end of phrases, and at cadences, and his beautiful tone just shines when he matches it with another player or other players, whether he’s playing violin or viola. This combination is so brilliant, and Perlman’s joy in playing never ceases to draw me right in! There are a few instrumentalists whose gorgeous sound and manner of playing I can recognize blind, and Perlman is one....doesn’t matter what I’m doing, what piece it is-even songs from the klezmer album on the radio before I even _KNEW_ there was a klezmer album, which was bizarre-or where I am, I _always_ know it’s he playing. Such a phenomenal combo!!

oy, these two both have such great spirits, sense of humor, and interest in other music forms, i really would have loved to have heard them improvise together, like that little bluegrass bit at beginning. pearlman later made a pretty poor ersatz klezmer album that came off as the echo of what was once klezmer...but that beginning as quite good.

Maestro Perlman has impeccable virtuosity but the subtleties of folk idioms challenge him as much as anyone else. He has often for instance played Klezmer but is not yet (yet) considered an historically great Klezmer artist, which is fine. Give him time...He has great fun showing his love and respect for all sorts of folk fiddling, and is beloved by folk musicians for this. He has a reputation as a truly fine gent and a great artist. I play Gaelic/English/Americana and would play with him in a heartbeat. Asked by (as i recall) a Klezmerim how he he achieved such precision of intonation he answered "I make as many mistakes as you do, I just fix 'em faster!". This has become my mantra as I , a fluter, (try to) learn a bit of folk fiddlin' myself.

I believe Zukerman starts off at 1:30 with some improvised tune, which Perlman then extrapolates into the first theme of the 4th movement of Brahms' op.99 Cello/Piano sonata. Starts with the same few notes. kzitem.info/news/bejne/2YqosGuXenZhZKQ Here is Barenboim and du Pre playing it. Not a fan of the recording myself... but as a minor curiosity relevant to this video, observe the identity of the page-turner.

It seems that Zukerman is over playing his part, but being very subtle. Many times the accompaniment is louder and more profound than the melody. Maybe they are not aware of this because they are professional friends. Zukerman’ s playing does have more domination. Both are truly equally great players. Balance should be addressed.
