Lendl is playing at an incredibly high level in this match and at this time in his career. Maybe the best I've ever seen of many of his great matches. He was "Robo"-player----incredibly consistent from both sides and absolutely ripping groundstrokes and running Mcenroe all over the place and keeping him on his heels. Imo, Lendl makes my top five greatest players of all time.

Lendl absolutely owned the Masters in the 80's. 5 time champion and an incredible 9 consecutive finals from 1980 to 88. In 1989 he lost to Edberg in the semifinal, if he would have won that match he would have made the final for the entire decade of the 80s.

Lendl's footwork, positioning, and overall form are truly impeccable, as close to perfection, as Vic Braden and others have commented, as it's possible to get . . .

John then tried Patrick's 200G and turned the tide for a while. He is in better shape now then in 1983. Should have taken better care of himself.

I was at this match. (Cheap seats.) I remember Lendl pushing Mac around all night. Lendl really attacked Mac's backhand, which Mac defensively sliced a lot. After this Mac then had to come back out and play doubles with Fleming. As I recall, they lost too. You could tell Mac wasn't over the thrashing Lendl gave him.

It's always something innit? John wasn't feeling well, John was tired, John was using a grotty racquet, etc ... To set the record straight: Lendl used a racquet with the smallest head, i.e., striking area, of all but one or two of his contemporaries until late in his career. McEnroe switched to graphite shortly after this match and was able to restore a degree of competitiveness to the rivalry. But only temporarily. There was far more to Lendl than a racquet. You should "take that into account."

I remember this year for Mac, not his greatest, but he did have some of the greatest 5 set matches of all time....Connors at wimbledon, Noah in Davis Cup, Wilander in Davis Cup....1982 and 83 shouldve been his bread and butter years, where he collected grand slam trophy after grand slam trophy, but it was not to be....perhaps he truly missed Borg

After this win, Lendl pretty much owned McEnroe. I used to see Mac losing his mind seeing all those crushing down-the-line shots go whizzing by him. It still bothers him to this day, he still mentions the humiliation on the air sometimes. But then again, he still has catty remarks for Bjorn Borg (he "looked old" while still looking younger and fitter than McEnroe). I'm glad Lendl shut his arrogant mouth. It's too bad we don't have better video ot the best one-handed topspin backhand I ever saw.

why didnt mcenroe serve and volley as thats is best strength, hes playing into lendls strength by rallying from the baseline

Lendl hardly "cheated" using a graphite racket - that is one of the most ridiculous comments I've ever heard. Anyway, Mac could have switched to graphite (and did so shortly after this match) but the main reason McEnroe turned the tables on Lendl later in 1983 and most times in '84 was he totally changed his tactics and came in much more down the middle to cut of the angle for Lendl's passing shots.

Throughout the 1980s, they were always held at Madison Square Garden in New York. It was only in 1990 when it started to move locations again, when it moved to Frankfurt.

The strength, or weight of shot, that Lendl possessed often dictated what McEnroe could and could not do, not only in this match but throughout their rivalry. McEnroe simply did not have the strength to get in a baseline duel with Lendl. His first and oftentimes only option against Lendl was to get to the net and hope he didn't get passed. It's really no secret that John McEnroe would have struggled to beat Zsa Zsa Gabor in a baseline to baseline match, much less a champion of Lendl's calibre.

For me it was period (80-82) it was period Lendl had his better game. I don't think wood racket was reason of mac enroe's defeat 2(years before, Borg won with a wood racket).

McEnroeable, I believe we shall just have to agree to disagree here. But in looking over your response I respect the fact that you clearly have taken the time to understand the game and that you are probably well acquainted with those odd alien objects called books. It gets unbelievably tiresome even attempting to respond to adolescent, bogtrotting fan-boys whom YT, for reasons I cannot comprehend, allows access to . . . Ah, well. Cheers!

kw19193, just came across this. Mcenroe went max200g and dominated lendl 83 and 84, but lendl had the wood on him at other stages. Mcenroe handled him ez from the baseline in 84 and early 85, until he took sebatical from tennis getting married etc. When he came back mid 86 he was never the same but no one can dispute lendl wasn't a great player. Good old days of serve volley v baseliner.
