Oh, gosh, what can I say? This film draws you in, so that you are with the soldiers in those awful conditions, aware of the enemy who you know are there but hidden. Wonderful photography, a great performance by Ivan, so confident but fragile. The story progresses and you can feel the victory coming but at what cost? Then the scene where they are looking through the records of prisoners, and you know, before it happens, whose image you will see, looking defiantly at his captors. I needed tissues, I confess. Towards the end of the movie there's a scene in which Ivan points at other boys and girls, one by one. Each child then falls to the sand, as though dead. I believe that Mr Tarkovsky was saying that Ivan was ALWAYS doomed to pass on, as indeed are ALL children. Those children who don't die tragically while they are still children are nonetheless doomed to be erased by the slow, cruel passage of time. Weren't you once a child, Dear Reader? Age of phonograph 😌. Dad had one.. he’d play a record on which he sang a sad song in his mother language when he was a young man. We still had it after war and him passing.. only then our oldest adopted brother took it away and kept it for himself. He loved Dad dearly and so did Dad. Dad had him long before we were born so.. he kind of felt like he owned the phonograph for he knew the real value of its worth. Dad seen him get married, have children and he even drove two of his children to school before war struck. Long story but .. that piece of memory of the phonograph playing took me back to Dad’s youthful voice … singing .. mournfully…

This apart, what I observed from the movie is Germans didn't like reading so they didn't have good authors, no good literature, not even today (?).
