Venue: Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, Madrid (Spain) 30/01/2012
Abstract:
In this class fragment, Professor Gitlis works on some passages of Saint-Saëns' op 28 to focus on aspects such as tempo, articulation and character. Gitlis comments that a character change does not imply a tempo change. The passage marked 'con morbidezza' could have more dancing air and hold the crescendo. On double stops, it is better to play with less bow and less vibrato, and it is also important to keep the listener surprised. Coming back to the main theme of the Allegro ma non troppo, its character may be similar to Toreador, from the opera Carmen.
